chapter 1
Amelia Carter stared at the numbers on the laptop screen until they blurred.
She blinked several times, hoping they would somehow change.
They didn't.
₦48,700,000 in outstanding debt.
Her stomach tightened.
She scrolled through the financial report again, reading every line carefully. The Carter family business had been struggling for months, but she had never imagined the situation was this serious.
Behind her, the grandfather clock in the living room ticked steadily.
Tick.
Tick.
Tick.
Her father sat across the room with both hands clasped together. He looked exhausted.
"How long have you known?" Amelia finally asked.
Her father's eyes remained on the floor.
"Three months."
Amelia slowly closed the laptop.
"Three months?"
"I was trying to fix it."
"Without telling me?"
"I didn't want you to worry."
Amelia stood.
"How could I not worry when our company is about to disappear?"
Her father sighed.
"The bank has given us until Friday."
She stared at him.
"Friday?"
"If we don't make a payment by then, they'll begin the process of taking control of the company."
Amelia felt as though the room had suddenly become smaller.
The company wasn't just a building or a collection of accounts. It had been started by her grandfather and built by her parents over decades.
It was the reason her family had survived difficult years.
"We can get another loan," she said.
"We've already tried."
"Sell some assets."
"We have."
"Find an investor."
Her father looked at her.
"There's only one investor who has shown interest."
"Who?"
He hesitated.
"Adrian Blake."
The name meant something immediately.
Everyone in the city knew Adrian Blake.
At twenty-eight, he had become the youngest CEO of Blake International, one of the most powerful companies in the country. Newspapers often described him as brilliant, ruthless and impossible to negotiate with.
Amelia frowned.
"Blake?"
Her father nodded.
"Why would he want our company?"
"I don't know."
That answer bothered her.
"Then I'll meet him."
Her father immediately shook his head.
"Amelia, no."
"Why?"
"Because I don't trust him."
"Do you trust losing everything?"
Her father didn't answer.
That was all the answer she needed.
---
The next morning, Amelia stood outside Blake International.
The enormous glass building seemed almost intimidating beneath the morning sun.
She looked at the business card in her hand.
ADRIAN BLAKE
CHIEF EXECUTIVE OFFICER
She took a deep breath and walked inside.
The receptionist looked up.
"Good morning. Do you have an appointment?"
"No."
"I'm sorry, but Mr. Blake's schedule is completely booked."
"I'm Amelia Carter."
The receptionist paused.
"From Carter Holdings?"
"Yes."
She picked up the phone.
Amelia waited.
After a few seconds, the receptionist put the phone down.
"Mr. Blake will see you."
Amelia's eyebrows lifted.
"Now?"
"Yes."
That was unexpected.
An assistant led her through several corridors before stopping outside a large office.
"Go in."
Amelia pushed the door open.
A man stood near the windows, looking over the city.
He wore a perfectly fitted black suit. His posture was calm, almost too calm for someone whose company controlled billions.
He turned when he heard the door close.
His expression didn't change.
"Amelia Carter."
She nodded.
"Mr. Blake."
"Sit."
She sat opposite his desk.
Adrian remained standing.
"You came about your family's company."
"Yes."
"I've read the financial reports."
"Then you know we have a strong recovery plan."
"I know you have debt."
Amelia frowned.
"We're more than our debt."
"That's true."
He finally sat down.
"Which is why you're here."
"I want to know if you're willing to invest."
Adrian studied her for several seconds.
Then he opened a folder.
"I can save Carter Holdings."
Amelia's heart lifted.
"Really?"
"Yes."
"How much?"
"Enough to clear the immediate debt."
She leaned forward.
"What do you want in return?"
Adrian closed the folder.
"You."
Amelia froze.
"What?"
"You'll work for me."
She stared at him.
"For how long?"
"Six months."
"And after six months?"
"The agreement ends."
Amelia looked suspiciously at him.
"Why me?"
"I need someone who understands Carter Holdings."
"You could hire a consultant."
"I could."
"Then why don't you?"
Adrian's eyes remained fixed on hers.
"Because I don't want a consultant."
There was something strange about his answer.
Amelia looked at the contract he had placed on the desk.
"Is this a job?"
"Consider it a temporary executive position."
"What exactly would I be doing?"
"Working directly with me."
She picked up the contract and began reading.
The terms were surprisingly straightforward.
Six months.
Full-time employment.
Confidentiality.
No interference with Blake International's internal affairs.
And Adrian would provide the financial support necessary to keep Carter Holdings operating.
She reached the final page.
Her eyes stopped.
There was one handwritten note beneath the printed conditions.
The truth about what happened six years ago will be revealed when the contract is completed.
Amelia's expression changed.
"What is this?"
Adrian didn't answer immediately.
She looked up.
"What happened six years ago?"
"That's not part of today's discussion."
"You just put it in the contract."
"I did."
"Then it is part of the discussion."
Adrian leaned back.
"You want me to save your family's company."
"Yes."
"I want you to work for me."
"For six months."
"Correct."
"Then why mention six years ago?"
For the first time, something shifted in Adrian's expression.
Not anger.
Not fear.
Something closer to regret.
"Because your family has a history with mine."
Amelia's heart began beating faster.
"What history?"
Adrian looked away.
"You should ask your father."
"My father won't tell me."
"Then perhaps you should find out why."
She stood.
"If you know something about my family, you have no right to keep it from me."
Adrian remained seated.
"You have every right to walk away."
Amelia looked at the contract.
Then she thought about her father's tired face.
She thought about the employees who depended on Carter Holdings.
She thought about everything her family could lose by Friday.
Finally, she sat back down.
"I'll sign."
Adrian pushed a pen toward her.
"Read it carefully first."
"I already did."
She signed her name.
Amelia Carter.
Adrian took the contract and looked at the signature.
Then he signed beneath it.
For a moment, the room was silent.
Amelia stood.
"When does the job begin?"
"Tomorrow."
She nodded and turned toward the door.
"Amelia."
She stopped.
Adrian's voice had changed.
"When you start working here, don't trust everyone."
She slowly turned around.
"Is that a warning?"
"It's advice."
"From you?"
"Especially from me."
Amelia studied him for a moment before leaving.
The door closed behind her.
Adrian remained still.
His eyes returned to the contract.
To Amelia's signature.
Then he opened the drawer beside his desk and pulled out an old photograph.
It showed two young men standing together outside a company building.
One was his father.
The other was Amelia's father.
On the back of the photograph was a handwritten date.
Six years ago.
Adrian stared at it.
He had spent six years keeping the promise he made that night.
Now Amelia had walked straight back into his life.
And sooner or later, she was going to discover why.
