The next morning, Olivia arrived at Caldwell Media earlier than usual, hoping to catch Ethan before the full chaos of the office consumed him. The streets of New York buzzed with the familiar rhythm of hurried commuters, yellow taxis, and the distant wail of sirens. Olivia tucked her notebook under her arm and adjusted her blazer, feeling the weight of anticipation in her chest. The elevator doors opened to the twenty-fourth floor, and she stepped out into the familiar hum of keyboards, ringing phones, and overlapping conversations. Olivia’s eyes instinctively scanned for Ethan. He was there, as always, at the large desk near the floor-to-ceiling windows, reviewing reports with his signature intensity. She hesitated, momentarily captivated by the way sunlight traced his sharp jawline. “Morning,” she called softly, not wanting to startle him. He glanced up, offering a small nod. “Olivia. Good to see you early.” His tone was casual, but the hint of approval in his eyes sent a shiver down her spine. She returned the nod, making her way to her desk. The space was now hers officially, personalized with her laptop, a few notebooks, and a cup of coffee—black, exactly how she liked it. She unpacked quickly, readying herself for another high-pressure day. Her first task involved compiling background data for an upcoming corporate exposé. The assignment was challenging, but Olivia thrived under pressure. She typed quickly, cross-referencing sources, fact-checking every detail, and annotating her notes meticulously. Ethan appeared beside her desk again, seemingly out of nowhere. “How’s the research coming?” His voice was calm but carried the authority that made her sit straighter in her chair. “Almost done,” Olivia replied. “I double-checked the numbers from last quarter and verified the sources. Everything lines up.” He leaned slightly closer, glancing at her screen. “Impressive,” he said, his tone neutral but firm. “Attention to detail is key. One small error, and the credibility of the whole piece collapses.” Olivia felt the heat rise to her cheeks. His nearness was distracting, but she reminded herself to focus. “I understand. I’ll make sure it’s flawless.” He studied her for a moment, then straightened and walked away, leaving her heart racing. Olivia shook her head, scolding herself silently. Focus on work, Olivia. Focus on work. Hours passed in a flurry of editing, phone calls, and notes. By midday, Olivia was exhausted but proud of her progress. Ethan, however, seemed to have a way of entering her thoughts at the most inconvenient times. During a short break, she found herself in the office kitchen, pouring a fresh cup of coffee, when Ethan appeared behind her. “Long morning?” he asked, his voice casual, but the smirk tugging at his lips suggested he knew exactly how long it had been. Olivia jumped slightly, then smiled politely. “Yes, but productive.” He leaned against the counter, just close enough that she felt the warmth radiating from him. “Good. I like productive,” he murmured. “But don’t burn out before you even settle in. Pace yourself.” Olivia’s heart skipped. His gaze was intent, personal in a way that made the office noise vanish. She tried to focus on pouring sugar into her coffee instead, but the tremor in her hand betrayed her composure. “Thank you,” she managed, her voice barely above a whisper. Ethan’s smirk deepened. “You’re welcome. But don’t thank me too much. I like to see results, not gratitude.” He straightened, leaving her with a sense of anticipation that clung to her like a second skin. Back at her desk, Olivia couldn’t shake the feeling of being watched, of being observed with scrutiny and hidden amusement. She reminded herself repeatedly that he was her boss. That no matter how magnetic he was, this was a professional environment. And yet, every glance he shot her, every subtle tilt of his head, felt charged with unspoken tension. By late afternoon, the office buzz had softened. Olivia was reviewing her notes for final submission when Ethan’s assistant approached her desk. “Mr. Caldwell wants to see you in his office,” she said politely. Olivia’s stomach dropped. She quickly straightened, smoothing her blouse, and followed the assistant. The office door closed behind her, and the soft hum of the city below felt distant. Ethan sat behind his desk, reviewing some documents, but his piercing blue eyes lifted to meet hers the moment she entered. “Sit,” he said. Olivia obeyed, her nerves coiling tightly in her stomach. “I’ve been reviewing your work from yesterday,” he began, leaning back in his chair. “You have potential. But potential alone isn’t enough in this business. It’s about precision, timing, and the ability to anticipate outcomes before anyone else does. You’re good, Olivia, but you need to be sharper.” “Yes, I understand,” she said, keeping her voice steady. He leaned forward slightly, and for a brief moment, their faces were close. The office smelled faintly of his cologne, something crisp and subtly intoxicating. Olivia’s pulse quickened. “I’ll be honest,” Ethan continued, his tone low, almost confiding. “I don’t often see interns with your focus. Most are distracted or overwhelmed. You… aren’t.” He paused, and for a fleeting second, his intense gaze softened. “That’s rare.” Olivia felt heat rise to her cheeks. The compliment was unexpected, but she couldn’t allow it to cloud her judgment. “Thank you, sir. I’ll continue to work hard.” Ethan leaned back again, a faint smirk curling at his lips. “Good. Now go finish your assignment. I expect it on my desk by six. And Olivia…” He hesitated just long enough for her to feel the weight of his attention. “…don’t disappoint me.” She left his office with a mix of adrenaline and apprehension. His words lingered, but it wasn’t just the professional pressure—it was the unspoken tension that made her stomach flutter and her mind reel. Back at her desk, Olivia forced herself to focus. The numbers, the facts, the graphs—all needed to be perfect. But even as she worked, her thoughts wandered to Ethan, to the close quarters of his office, to the way he had spoken her name with such intensity. By the end of the day, she realized two things: Caldwell Media was everything she had dreamed of, and working so close to Ethan Caldwell would be both her greatest opportunity and her most dangerous temptation.
