He stayed on the couch again.
Neither of them discussed it. Julia simply got the spare blanket the grey one, the one that had become his by default and put it on the armrest the way she had before. Daniel took off his shoes and jacket and that was the whole conversation about it.
She went to bed.
Lay in the dark.
Listened to the apartment settle around her.
She wasn't anxious exactly. More awake in the particular way she got when something had shifted and her mind hadn't caught up to her heart yet. Like a room rearranged in the night that you had to learn to walk through differently in the morning.
She fell asleep eventually.
Woke at six to grey light and the distant sound of the city starting its Thursday.
She lay still for a moment.
