Chapter 114

114 Alaric's POV "We have just one guard at the entrance and six close to him. It seems they're discussing; causing a distraction could make all of them walk right in here, and we would have no way of escape because we can't even stand against them." Gabe was all about leaving the cell; at least he was making sure some loose ends were tied. But I doubted this would be a successful plan. "How do we make those six guards leave without raising suspicions?" I overheard Gabe's question. Although he was speaking to himself, he wanted anyone to voice suggestions. "By starting a fight. If it's a fight, the rest would leave him to handle his responsibilities because the dungeons are his responsibility. Since one is dead in here, he would rush in to save his friend." I helped out in the best way I could. "You're a hard nut to c***k, Alaric. You know that, right?" "What do you mean?" I knew he was angry over me helping them with their plans. "Just let them be. I mean, they don't owe you anything. I don't see the reason why you're offering to help them." He blurted out as he stared at the look on Gabe's face. Gabe walked up to the weakest among his group, ready to escape with him. He punched him, and the fight began; everyone was hitting their bars, and just as I expected, only one guard walked in while the rest went back to their duty posts. The men returned to their cells and closed the doors to make it look like they were locked. "Have you both lost your senses?" he roared as he was about to hit Gabe with the head of the sword in his hand. Gabe attacked him, and just like last time, he went for his ribs. "Thank you for the keys, but you're staying back, and you won't be needing this." He picked up the keys and left the soldier to bleed to death. "Someone call for help!" "If I do that, will you guarantee your allegiance to me?" I questioned him, wearing a smile on my face, knowing that this was my perfect opportunity to have the insider I needed to leave this hellhole. "If I survive this, I'll be of service to you. I'm weak; hence, I've been assigned to the dungeons. It's the lowest position in this pack." He coughed out blood while making me realize that they weren't the actual enemies, but the leader was. "I was forced into this. Don't let me bleed out here!" Ryan started beating the bars, growling. I could tell that he listened to his words and understood what I wanted at this point. As soon as two guards barged into the dungeons, they found him screaming for help; they didn't sound the alarm. "We can't sound the alarm. If we do, he's going to be dead either way." "Let's take him to an empty dungeon and make sure he gets treated while we let the Alpha know that we need to check those tunnels for any soldiers," the second soldier suggested. "Since it's time for the meeting, we should include him among the soldiers that were injured in the last battle. He would be treated immediately. I hope he has enough life left for this little journey." I was pleased when they helped him up and carried him out of the dungeons. "You've sabotaged their plans with yours, Alaric. Now they will lose their lives, and you will have someone here who's loyal to you." Ryan made his own observation, making it look like I committed a crime. I did what was best for both parties; if we have him on our side, he's going to aid our escape, and if he dies, they would get caught when they don't see anyone standing at the gates leading to the dungeons. "If they were willing to listen, I had to do what everyone would do if they were in my position. An enemy pledges allegiance to his enemy when he has run out of options and at his point of death," I explained to him so he would understand. "I'm not judging you. I'm glad that the majority stayed back and only a few of them went with him." He agreed with my words. "I hope he survives this. I know how to identify his face. I can't wait to understand their mode of operation so I can find a subtle way to counter their defense; that's our only strategy back to our pack." I spoke to him in whispers. I didn't know who I could trust within these walls, so it was better I only spoke to Ryan. "I wonder if they've gone far. Gabe isn't trustworthy. I don't know why he comes up with this escape plan, out to the dungeons and then through the secret passage and into the forest. What makes him think that they don't know those routes were built to catch people like him?" I chuckled at my thoughts, imagining the surprised look on their faces when they're ambushed and captured. "More like he has his own personal aims for this escape plan. Since there aren't many, he's going to do whatever it takes to see to it that he escapes, even if he'll be the only surviving one left." It felt like Ryan knew my thoughts. Gabe has a lot of enemies in this dungeon. I'm wondering how he managed to win some of them to his mission. If my enemy and I are placed in the same space, I would never trust him with an escape plan. He might be trying to kill me in his plan. "We have to sit and watch how it unfolds," I added. "Is that all you think about? You and I know that this is all your doing, Alaric. You're the Alpha, but sometimes you behave like a toddler. If not for you, we wouldn't be in here. This is your handiwork, and I hope you find a way to get us out of this, or else..." "That's exactly what my thoughts are based on. Don't be so harsh just because this is my fault. I got us into this; I will find a way to get us out of it. You're just letting your emotions get the best of you." I tried to place my hands on his shoulders; he pushed them off, staring at his red, bloodshot eyes. "You're talking about my emotions? Have you checked yours? You can't even get a hold of yourself; your mind is unstable, and your emotions are eruptions of danger. Don't you dare speak about control when you don't even know the meaning," he growled softly, trying to relax his nerves. He was pissed at this point. "You have to calm your nerves and breathe, Ryan. You're tired, thirsty, and famished at the same time. Don't make this harder than it already is." I tried to calm him down; he let out a sigh that he didn't even know was there. He was relieved, but his heart was heavy, so I allowed him to voice out his thoughts. "I wonder how Arielle is faring. What is she going through? If you were not jealous, we wouldn't be in this mess. Your jealousy and callousness dragged us into these chains you're staring at. I hope you do find a way to get us out of these cuffs."
