The following morning, Amara couldn’t shake the uneasy feeling that someone was watching her.
As she walked Lily to school, she glanced over her shoulder more than once. The streets were busy, filled with parents and children, yet the strange feeling remained.
“mommy, are you okay? Lily asked,
Holding her hand tightly.
Amara smiled gently.
“ I’m fine, sweetheart. I was thinking.”
After kissing Lily,at the school gate, goodbye, she hurried to sunrise cafe.
The breakfast rush had just begun when the cafe door opened.
Ethan walked in.
The moment he saw Amara, relief washed over him.
“Good morning.”
“Good morning.”she replied with a smile.
“You look worried.”
She hesitated before speaking.
I think someone has been asking questions about me.”
Ethan expression changed instantly.
What kind of question?”
My manager said a woman wanted to know where I live..whether I have a child.”
A knot formed in Ethan’s stomach.
He knew exactly who it was.
Sophia.
But he wasn’t ready to tell Amara the truth.
Instead, he said calmly, “maybe it was just someone looking for the wrong person.”
Amara nodded, though she wasn’t convinced.
“ I hope you’re right.”
Across town, Sophia sat in her luxurious office, studying a file on her desk.
Every page revealed another details about Amara’s life.
A waitress.
A single mother.
No wealth family.
No powerful connections.
Sophia smiled.
“this will be easier than I thought.”
She picked up her phone.
“I need you to do something for me.”
The man on the other end answered immediately.
“Anything, ma’am.”
I don’t want anyone hurt..not yet.”
She paused.
“I just want Ethan to believe Amara isn’t the woman he thinks she is.”
“ i understand “
“And make sure she never finds out who hired you.”
“consider it done.”
Sophia ended the call,satisfied.
The game begun.
That evening, Ethan insisted on driving Amara home after work.
As they pulled up outside her building, Lily came running out with a bright smile.
“Mr Ethan!”
She threw her tiny arms around him.
He laughed and lifted her into the air.
“Someone seems happy to see me.”
“You promised you’d teach me how to play chess!”
“I remember.”
Amara watched them from the doorway.
Seeing Lily laugh so freely warmed her heart.
For the first time in years, she imagined what life might be like if someone truly loved both of them.
Just then, Ethan’s phone buzzed.
A text message appeared on the screen.
If you want Amara and her daughter to stay safe, stop seeing them.
There was no name.
No number
Just the message.
Ethan’s smile disappeared.
He looked around the quiet street, searching for whoever had sent it.
Across the road, a black SUV pulled away from the curb and disappeared into the light.
Someone was watching.
And whoever it was had just declared war.
