The hallway was silent.
Ethan stepped in front of Amara, shielding her from Sophia.
“You’ve said enough,” he said firmly. “Leave.”
Sophia folded her arms.
“I wasn’t talking to you.”
Her eyes settled on Amara.
“I came to speak with the woman who’s turning your life upside down.”
Amara took a slow breath.
“If you have something to say, say it.”
Sophia smiled.
“I like your courage.”
Ethan’s voice hardened.
“Stop playing games.”
“I’m not.”
Sophia reached into her designer handbag and pulled out a sealed brown envelope.
She held it out to Amara.
“Read this.”
Amara hesitated before taking it.
Inside were printed copies of newspaper headlines, blog posts, and social media comments.
Some called her a gold digger.
Others accused her of trapping Ethan with lies.
One headline read:
‘Waitress’s Daughter Living Off Billionaire’s Fortune?’
Amara’s hands trembled.
None of it was true.
Yet thousands of people believed it.
Sophia watched her carefully.
“This is only the beginning.”
Amara looked up.
“What do you want?”
“I want peace.”
Ethan laughed bitterly.
“Peace? This is your doing.”
Sophia ignored him.
She took one step closer to Amara.
“If you leave Ethan’s life today, the stories stop. The reporters disappear. Your daughter grows up in peace.”
Amara swallowed hard.
“And if I don’t?”
Sophia’s expression turned cold.
“The media will keep digging. They’ll follow you everywhere. They’ll photograph Lily at school. They’ll write stories about her. Is that the childhood you want for your daughter?”
Those words struck Amara like a knife.
She glanced toward the apartment door, where Lily was inside drawing quietly, unaware of the storm surrounding her.
For the first time, fear outweighed anger.
Sophia saw it in her eyes.
She knew she had found Amara’s greatest weakness.
“I’ll give you twenty-four hours,” Sophia said calmly.
“Walk away from Ethan.”
“Or watch the world make your daughter’s life miserable.”
Without another word, she turned and walked toward the elevator.
The doors closed behind her.
Silence returned.
Amara stood frozen, clutching the envelope.
Ethan gently touched her shoulder.
“Don’t listen to her.”
She looked at him, tears filling her eyes.
“You don’t understand.”
“I do.”
“No, Ethan.”
Her voice cracked.
“I’ve spent years protecting Lily. If staying away from you is the only way to keep her safe…”
She couldn’t finish the sentence.
Ethan shook his head.
“I won’t let Sophia control your life.”
“But what if she can?”
Neither of them had an answer.
Later that night, after Lily had fallen asleep, Amara sat alone on the balcony.
She looked up at the stars, remembering everything that had happened in just a few weeks.
Meeting Ethan had brought joy back into her life.
It had also brought danger.
She whispered to herself,
“What kind of mother puts love before her child?”
Tears rolled down her cheeks.
Inside the apartment, her phone vibrated.
A message from an unknown number appeared on the screen.
You have 24 hours. Choose wisely.
Attached to the message was a recent photograph of Lily playing in the school playground.
Amara’s blood ran cold.
Someone had been watching her daughter.
She immediately locked the doors and rushed into Lily’s room.
Her little girl slept peacefully, hugging her teddy bear.
Amara knelt beside the bed and held Lily’s tiny hand.
“I won’t let anyone hurt you,” she whispered.
Outside, across the street, a black SUV sat in the shadows.
Sophia watched the apartment from inside.
Her assistant looked uneasy.
“Do you really think she’ll leave Ethan?”
Sophia never took her eyes off the building.
“She will.”
“How can you be so sure?”
Sophia smiled.
“Because a mother’s love is stronger than a woman’s heart.”
But as the SUV drove away, neither of them noticed another car parked at the opposite end of the street.
Inside it sat Daniel.
He lowered his camera after photographing Sophia’s SUV.
He picked up his phone and called Ethan.
“Sir…”
“I think I’ve finally found the proof we’ve been looking for.”
