Chapter 6 : Sneaking Past The Guards

238 Words
The clock on my wall said 1:30pm. Thirty minutes until the lawyer. My palms were sweating. The guards changed shifts at 2pm. For five minutes, only one guard would be at the front door. That was my chance. I slipped the phone into my pocket and smoothed my dress. If I looked nervous, they would know. I walked downstairs slowly. My heart was beating so loud I was sure they could hear it. Guard 1 was by the door. Guard 2 was walking toward the kitchen. "Going for a walk," I said. My voice didn't shake. "The doctor said fresh air." The guard looked at me, then at the gate. "Ten minutes. That's all." I nodded and stepped outside. The sun hit my face. Freedom was ten minutes away. If I could make it to 5th street. My feet moved fast on the pavement. Don't run. Don't look suspicious. 1:42pm. 18 minutes left. A car slowed down beside me. Black windows. My stomach dropped. Was it Darius? But it drove past. Just a random car. I turned the corner to 5th street. The coffee shop was right there. Glass windows. People inside. And sitting at the corner table... a woman with a briefcase. She looked up when she saw me. I walked in. My legs felt like jelly. "Miss Evelyn?" she whispered. I nodded. "I'm your lawyer. We have 8 minutes before your husband's men notice you're gone."
