THE FIFTH GRAVE

1344 Words
The rain had not stopped. It poured relentlessly over the forest as though the heavens themselves were trying to wash away what had happened inside the Harper farmhouse. The muddy road leading into the woods had become almost impossible to walk on, but five frightened girls pushed forward, carrying a heavy bundle wrapped in an old bedsheet. None of them spoke. None of them dared look at what they were carrying. Ava's lifeless body felt heavier with every step. Branches scraped against their arms. Cold rain soaked their clothes, while flashes of lightning briefly illuminated the narrow path before darkness swallowed everything again. "This is a mistake," Brooke whispered for what felt like the hundredth time. Chloe didn't answer. She marched ahead with a flashlight in one hand, her jaw clenched so tightly it hurt. "We should tell the police," Megan pleaded. "We can still explain what happened." "And tell them we left her there for hours?" Chloe snapped. "Do you think they'll believe it was an accident?" Silence. Deep down, they all knew Chloe had a point. Fear had already made them guilty. The moment they chose to hide Ava instead of calling for help, there was no simple way back. The forest seemed endless. The deeper they walked, the colder the air became. Even the sound of insects had disappeared. Only the rain remained. Then Chloe stopped. "Here." The clearing was small, surrounded by towering oak trees whose twisted branches reached toward the sky like skeletal fingers. "This place is perfect." "It feels wrong," Sophie whispered. "It doesn't matter." Chloe handed Riley a shovel. "Dig." Nobody moved. "I said dig." One by one, they began. The wet earth was stubborn, clinging to every shovel. Mud splashed onto their shoes and clothes. Every few minutes someone would stop to catch their breath before digging again. After nearly an hour, the hole was finally deep enough. Nobody wanted to look at it. Nobody wanted to imagine what came next. Together they lowered Ava into the grave. For the first time since the accident, Chloe looked directly at Ava's face. The expression she saw wasn't one of anger. It wasn't fear. It was sadness. Her heart skipped a beat. For a single second, Chloe almost shouted for everyone to stop. Almost. Instead, she looked away. "Cover her." Shovel after shovel, the earth returned. The rain erased their footprints almost as quickly as they made them. When the grave disappeared beneath fresh soil, Brooke collapsed onto her knees and sobbed. "We're monsters." "No," Chloe replied quietly, though she wasn't sure she believed herself anymore. "It was an accident." Nobody answered. As they prepared to leave, a cold wind swept through the clearing. Every flashlight flickered at once. The temperature dropped so suddenly that their breaths became visible. "What was that?" Riley whispered. Another gust. This time it carried something with it. A faint voice. "...Chloe..." The girls froze. "Did you hear that?" Megan asked. "Hear what?" "It sounded like someone calling your name." "There isn't anyone here." Another flash of lightning illuminated the clearing. For the briefest instant, Brooke gasped. She could have sworn someone was standing beside one of the trees. A girl. Long dark hair. Bare feet. White dress stained with mud. The lightning faded. Nothing was there. "Let's go," Chloe said quickly. None of them argued. --- By the time they reached the Harper house, dawn was beginning to break. They spent hours scrubbing every floor. The bloodstain disappeared beneath buckets of soapy water. Broken wooden boards from the attic were replaced as best they could. The old spirit board was locked away again. By noon, there was almost no evidence Ava had ever been there. Almost. Mrs. Harper returned that evening. "Ava!" she called as she entered. No answer. "Where is she?" Chloe forced herself to smile. "I... I think she ran away." Mrs. Harper frowned. "Again?" Chloe nodded. "She packed a small bag." Mr. Harper sighed. "I knew she wasn't grateful." "We'll report her missing tomorrow." But they never did. Days became weeks. The Harpers convinced themselves that Ava had simply left. After all, she was only their adopted daughter. The neighbors accepted the explanation. Eventually, people stopped asking. Only the five girls knew the truth. Or so they believed. --- The nightmares began exactly five nights later. Megan dreamed she was back in the forest. Only this time, the grave was open. She stood frozen as muddy fingers slowly reached over the edge. Then Ava climbed out. Her clothes were torn. Her face was pale. Rainwater dripped from her hair. "Ava..." Megan whispered. The girl smiled. Not with happiness. With sorrow. "You left me alone." Megan tried to run. Her feet refused to move. "You buried me." Ava took another step. "I was afraid." Another. "It was dark." Another. "I called for help." Megan screamed herself awake. Her bedroom was empty. She switched on every light. Her heart hammered inside her chest. "It was just a dream." She repeated the words over and over until sunrise. But when she looked beneath her bed the next morning, she found something that hadn't been there before. Wet soil. Fresh. Dark. As though someone had carried it in from the forest. --- The others began experiencing strange events too. Brooke heard soft footsteps following her through empty hallways at school. Whenever she turned around, no one was there. Riley started hearing whispers whenever it rained. Always the same words. "Don't leave me." Sophie discovered muddy footprints leading from her bedroom window to the side of her bed. Only one set. Bare footprints. Too small to belong to an adult. Chloe tried to ignore everything. She refused to believe in ghosts. "There has to be an explanation." Yet every night she woke at exactly 3:15 a.m. Every single night. The digital clock beside her bed blinked the same numbers. 3:15. No matter what time she fell asleep. No matter how tired she was. One night she finally looked toward her bedroom door. Someone was standing there. A girl. Perfectly still. Her face hidden by long black hair. "Who's there?" Chloe shouted. No reply. She reached for the lamp. The light flooded the room. The figure vanished. The clock now read 3:16. Chloe didn't sleep again. --- A week later, the five girls met in an abandoned gazebo behind the school. Nobody looked well. Dark circles rested beneath every pair of eyes. "You've seen her too," Brooke whispered. Nobody denied it. Megan nervously rubbed her hands together. "I think she's haunting us." "Don't be ridiculous," Chloe replied. "Then explain the footprints!" "The nightmares!" "The whispers!" "The lights!" "I don't know!" For the first time since Ava died, Chloe raised her voice. "I don't know what's happening!" The others stared. Chloe had always acted fearless. Now she looked terrified. "We should tell someone," Sophie whispered. "And say what?" "That we buried our foster sister because we panicked?" No one had an answer. The silence was broken by a slow clap of thunder overhead. Although the sky was perfectly clear. The girls looked upward. Not a single cloud could be seen. Then every bird in the nearby trees suddenly took flight at once, filling the air with frantic cries. An icy breeze swept through the gazebo. Five candles sat on an old picnic table nearby—leftover decorations from a school event. Without anyone touching them, all five flames lit at the same time. The girls stumbled backward. Then... One candle went out. The remaining four continued burning. No one spoke. No one breathed. Somewhere beyond the empty schoolyard came the sound of a little girl's voice. Soft. Distant. Almost carried by the wind. "I remember..." The voice faded. The four remaining candles flickered violently, casting long shadows across the frightened faces of the girls. And for the first time since they buried Ava in the woods, each of them realized the same terrible truth. Whatever had awakened that stormy night had not forgotten them. And it was patiently waiting for the truth to come to light.
