Chapter 4:

Alec: I have never seen her this furious before. Not even when she spent all day preparing dinner and I said I wasn’t eating, not even when I told her to stop interfering in the affairs of the pack. But today, it was just different, she had stared at me with that icy glare as she demanded we get out of the house. She was different today, more bolder, and I have never seen that side of her before. It scares me, this much courage in her. Something inside of me feels very off, the way she just looked at me felt a bit very strange and I don't like this feeling. Scarlet clings at me as we step out of the pack-house, the already setting sun casting a glow on both our faces. “I am very sorry!” She says with a weak smile, “I didn’t mean to make her overreact.” My mind is all over the place. “Yeah?” I replied, “What were you saying?” Scarlet seems a bit annoyed that I don’t remember what she just said but she puffs out a breath of air, and holds my hand. “I said I was desperately sorry.” She says, walking towards the car. I followed her silently, not saying a word. We got into the car. “Where to?” The driver asked, starting the engine. “To my house.” She said and the driver started driving out of the pack, she winked at me and somehow, it made me feel very uneasy. “Why don’t we go have some fun at my house?” “Okay,” I stare out of the window, thinking deeply. I still can’t erase that look in her eyes. It still haunts me for some unknown reasons. “I didn’t mean to cause a fight.” Scarlet murmurs, glancing at me with tearful eyes. “It’s all my fault, isn’t it?” I don’t respond, not until she nudges me with her elbow to make a comment. “Don’t overthink it. If Lena could cook for us, you wouldn’t even hurt yourself. I was meant to make her cook Osso Buco for you.” “I bet Lena must be a way better cook than me.” “Yeah, you really should try her Osso Buco. Best I have ever had.” When we just married, Lena would pack my lunch everyday. Even though I didn’t want her in my life, I couldn’t deny that she did take good care of me. Scarlet didn’t respond. The ride to her house is suffocating, filled with her forced laughter, trying to recall the old days, the times we snuck out for training, the times we danced together at moon festivals, but to be honest, the memories don't come to me. In fact, it feels like memories I am trying to push away. I didn’t laugh once. When we arrived, she reached for my hand as she pulled me inside. “Are you falling....for her?” she asks softly, her voice trembling. I snap my head towards her. “How can I love someone like her? She’s too weak to be my Luna.” Her eyes shine with hope. She leans in and kisses me and this time, I kiss her back. She pushes me to the wall. But the moment our lips met, Lena’s face popped up in my mind. I stiffen, Scarlet didn’t notice because she is already pulling at my shirt collar, whispering something about taking it upstairs. I pull back as if struck by lightning, her brows furrow in confusion. “I can’t. I’ve got a patrol in an hour.” The lie easily slips out of me and Scarlet stares at me strangely. “You never choose work over me.” There’s a strange glint in her eyes. “Today is very important. I have to go.” I kiss the side of her cheeks. “I promise to be back.” She leans against the wall. “You love me right?” “Yes, I love you.” I said, but it feels so lame. The usual spark has disappeared. She nods her head and I leave her house, not even looking back. I returned home quickly only to find the house dark and empty. My eyes darted around hurriedly but everywhere seemed quiet, too quiet. “Aubrey?” I called out at the top of my lungs, irritation slowly rising within me, but there was no answer. I grabbed my phone from my back pocket, trying to dial her line but it went straight to voicemail. Not once, not twice, instead five times. I growled, not knowing how to feel. I tossed my phone onto the couch angrily, “She’s doing this on purpose.” I muttered while biting my lower lip. Realizing something, I quickly picked up my phone and dialed the Beta’s number and he answered on the second ring, “Track her down, now!” There was a brief pause, and when I was about to hang up, the Beta’s hesitant voice pierced through the line, “Who are you referring to, Alpha Alec?” I felt infuriated but decided not to show it, I still needed his assistance in finding Lena after all. “Luna Lena of course. She’s nowhere to be found at the moment and I don't have a clue where she is.” For the first time, I sounded a bit vulnerable, especially as it concerned Lena’s matters. There was silence for a moment until I heard his voice again, “Alpha, she’s in the hospital again.” I froze, did my push really affect her that hard? Then the picture of her on the floor, the blood, and the glare she still had on her face as if she despised me flashed through my memory and I was speechless. Somehow, my whole body feels rigid in fear. The Beta’s voice spoke through the phone to draw my attention, “I thought you already knew?” Confusion slowly creeped in his voice and he continued, “After an hour in the clinic, she collapsed. The pack doctor said she already lost too much blood and she had a lot of internal bruises, but for now, she’s sedated.” For a moment, I couldn't speak. The only thing I could bring myself to mutter is, “What?” My throat was so void of words, I wanted to say more than that but my brain wasn’t processing this well. My body felt numb and cold. And for the first time that night, guilt settled within me. Questions ran through my head; if I hadn't pushed her, would she have collapsed? Is she going to be okay? Will she ever forgive me? Her glare from earlier kept reappearing into my memories as if she had pure hatred for me. After a while, I muttered gently into my phone, “Alright, thank you Jace, I’ll take it from here.” And without waiting for his response, I cut the call and immediately dash to the hospital.
