Lena:
The golden light from the window spilled into my face as I tried to peel my eyes open. A headache starts to surface. Where am I? The sharp smell of antiseptic wafted into my nostrils. I looked around the white four cornered room with beeping machines and realized that I am in a hospital. My wolf whimpers softly inside of me. What happened? How in the hell did I get here?
I try to sit upright, pain oozing all over my body; my limbs were heavy and sore, pain throbbing in every part deep within my muscles. I stare at my arm that’s lined up with bruises and I gasp, racking my brain so I can remember what happened. It comes rushing straight into me. I remember trying to survive in the water, flapping my hands like a fish that was drowning, because well, I was.
I was scared, I was afraid I was going to die, I have never felt so damn alone like I did when my body was submerged into the water.
None of that hurts, it was that Alec didn’t even take a glance at me as I was drowning. I feel pathetic right now, the door of the ward opens and a middle aged woman walks in, pushing a trolley. Her face is set in a warm smile.
“Already up, Luna?” she asks, moving towards the window. She adjusts the blinds, causing more light to cast on my face. “There, is that better? Or do you need it closed?”
“Thank you.” I reply instead, my mouth dry. “Can I please get a bottle of water?” I ask her.
“Of course, of course. Poor you. You haven’t had anything to drink in hours, you must be exhausted.” She leaves the room and returns minutes later with a glass cup of water. She hands it over to me and I hurriedly chug it down, feeling it burn the back of my throat. “How’d I end up here?”
Her face softens gently. “The beta saved your life, he dashed into the water and brought you here, such a lovely guy if you ask me.” She says, smiling. “Anything else that you might need?”
“No.” I smile warmly, “Thank you.”
“Please call me if you need anything. I am always here.” She leaves the room, closing the door gently behind her.
“Where are you? Don’t you think you owe Scarlet an apology after what you did to her?” Alec’s voice pierces through the mind-link, ice-cold as always, but I ignored it, pushing it away. I can’t deal with him right now. For the first time in my life, I don't owe him a damn explanation about my life.
I force myself out of the bed and start to make my way towards the door when it unlocks and Beta Jace walks in, he has a gentle smile on his face.
“Lena?” He asks, coming closer. “Are you alright? You need to rest a bit, you can’t leave the hospital yet.”
“Thank you very much for saving me, Beta Jace, but I have to leave right now.” Without waiting to hear his next words, I come out of the room only to run into my husband, Alec and Scarlet in the hallway.
My eyes trailed beside him, and there she was, standing beside him, wrapped in a brown shawl, her bandaged leg was visible beneath the hem of her dress with a gracious smile on her face.
“You’ve caused a lot of harm in one night,” he continued, his eyes held in disgust as he scanned my body briefly, as if he's mocking me for not answering his mind-link. “Apologize to her right now.”
I stared at him, then to her in silence. Scarlett already replaced the gracious smile with a wide, fake one.
Then she looked at Alec with a soft smile, “It’s fine, Alec. Lena didn’t mean to spill the soup on me, it was nothing but an accident, right?” Her voice was light and sweet as though she was a sweet angel, and her eyes pierced into mine thoroughly.
I couldn’t stand here any longer. What? The bruise on my arms was exposed to the air and Alec didn’t bother to ask if I was okay? I turned to walk away but the next moment, Alec grabbed my wrist painfully, right on my bruise.
I yelped, pain jolted in my arm while flinching and I gasped softly. The grip wasn’t even that tight, but it was right where it hurt the most.
I yanked my arm away from his grip with the little amount of energy within me with force and glared at him.
My action caught people’s attention and a nurse nearby looked up from her clipboard in shock.
Alec’s face darkened in anger, a hint of embarrassment and a wounded pride, “How dare you try to-?”
His words were abrupt when Scarlett let out a small, sharp cry, her hand trying to touch her bandaged leg, the anger visible on Alec’s face was immediately replaced with worry.
“Scarlet? What’s wrong?” His voice changed immediately into a worrisome, shaky one. He rushed to her side, fussing over her as if she was like a fragile glass, “What happened? Are you okay?”
“I just...I think my other leg hit the bandaged one, but I’m fine.” She muttered while trying to catch her breath and clutching his sleeve.
I just watched them in disdain, not uttering a single word. Something bitter erupted in my chest, and a little sense of jealousy bubbled within me, a cold laugh slipped my lips and I walked out of the hospital.
Once I was outside, the air pierced through my skin and hair sharply, then I breathed in heavily while trying to erase the memories from earlier.
Then my phone buzzed softly in my pocket. It was a message.
I stared at it for a while and it warmed my insides, a smile gently crept up my lips.
“The children miss you. Will you visit soon?”
My fingers hovered over the screen for some time, the smile still on my face before I finally typed, “Give me some time. I will be joining you soon.”
And for the first time in a very long time, I felt glad, at least someone misses and wants to see me.
