The Library

The library was Chloe's favorite place in the Shadow Court. Floor-to-ceiling shelves packed with ancient books. Scrolls stacked on tables. The smell of old paper and leather. Marcus had given her access to everything, though his expression suggested he didn't entirely approve. Chloe ran her fingers along the spines, reading titles in languages she didn't recognize. Then one caught her eye: The Fall of House Shadowborn. She pulled it from the shelf, settling into a chair by the window. The leather cover was worn smooth with age. "That's not light reading." Chloe looked up to find Theron in the doorway, watching her. "I want to understand," she said. "The curse. Your family. All of it." Theron crossed the room, sitting in the chair opposite hers. "What do you want to know?" "Everything." He was quiet for a long moment, his gaze distant. "It started three hundred years ago," he finally said, "with my ancestor, Aldric Shadowborn. He was powerful, ambitious, and hungry for more." Chloe set the book aside, giving him her full attention. "Aldric believed he could harness the moon's power directly," Theron continued. "Not through the natural bond all Lycans share, but by taking it. Stealing it." "How?" "A ritual. Dark magic. Blood sacrifice." Theron's jaw tightened. "He thought he could become a god." "What happened?" "The moon rejected him." Theron's voice was hollow. "The ritual fractured our bloodline's connection to the lunar cycle. Instead of power, we got darkness. A curse that drains our strength with each generation." Chloe's heart ached for him. "I'm sorry." "My father died young because of it. My grandfather even younger." Theron met her eyes. "I'm the strongest of my line in centuries, but even I can feel it eating away at me. Every day, a little weaker. A little more hollow." She reached across the space between them, taking his hand. "Not anymore." His fingers tightened around hers. "No. Not anymore." "Why me?" Chloe asked. "Why does it have to be someone wolfless?" "Because you exist outside the traditional hierarchy," Theron explained. "Your wolf was bound, severing your connection to pack structure. That makes you pure, in a way. Untainted by bloodline politics or pack bonds." "So I can channel the moon's power without interference." "Exactly." He pulled her hand to his lips, kissing her knuckles. "You're the key, Chloe. The only key." The responsibility was terrifying. But looking at Theron, at the hope in his eyes, the vulnerability he was showing her, she knew she couldn't walk away. "Tell me more about the ritual," she said softly. Theron's expression shifted, becoming more intense. "Are you sure?" "I need to know what I'm doing. What we're doing." He nodded slowly. "The curse is tied to my bloodline through dark magic. To break it, we need to replace that darkness with light. With lunar energy channeled through you." "Through our connection." "Yes." His thumb traced circles on her palm. "Each time we come together, you channel more power. The curse weakens. But it's not just physical, Chloe. It's emotional. Spiritual." "Complete surrender," she whispered, remembering his words from before. "Body and soul," Theron confirmed. "Only when we're completely open to each other, no walls, no barriers, will the curse fully break." Chloe's pulse quickened. "How many times?" "I don't know." His honesty was refreshing. "The texts aren't specific. But I can feel it working. Last night, I felt stronger than I have in years." She studied the curse marks on his neck. They were definitely weaker, the cracks more pronounced. "Can I touch them?" she asked. Theron went very still. "Yes."
