Nathalie. “Ugh.” My eyes dragged open, heavy as wet sand. I pressed a palm to my face and pushed myself upright, blinking until the room finally resolved into something familiar. My room. But the last thing I remembered was dancing at some penthouse party of Caroline’s friend. I squeezed my eyes shut, straining to fill in the blank space between then and now. How had I gotten home? Into bed? I glanced down. Into my pajamas? A headache throbbed behind my eyes. I pressed my fingers to my temples and swung my legs off the bed, and that’s when I spotted a pill and a glass of water waiting on the desk. Beside it, a note in Caroline’s looping handwriting: You were SO wasted last night. I’ll see you later when I’m back from work. Love you, your best friend forever, Caroline. A small smile
