Cold.
That was the first thing Nyra felt. Not pain. Not fear. Just a biting cold that wrapped around her body as she plunged through endless darkness. The world spun violently around her, jagged rocks blurring past into the black abyss beneath her. She couldn't see the bottom. She couldn't even tell which way was up.
Instinct took over. She reached for the wall, desperate to slow her fall, but her fingers only scraped rough stone, sharp pain shooting through her palm as loose rocks broke away beneath her touch.
"Kael!"
The name escaped before she could stop it. A heartbeat later, a strong hand caught hers, their fingers locking together.
"I've got you!" Kael shouted above the roar of falling stone.
The force of their fall jerked them sideways. Nyra slammed into the cavern wall hard enough to knock the breath from her lungs and Kael crashed into her a second later, twisting his body so that his back not hers took the impact. His muffled groan echoed through the darkness.
"Are you hurt?" he asked immediately.
Nyra stared at him. They were still falling and yet his first concern was whether she was injured.
"I'm fine," she answered, though she wasn't entirely sure it was true.
Below them, something shimmered. Water, a vast underground lake stretched beneath the collapsing sanctuary.
"Hold your breath!" Kael yelled.
They hit the water like falling stars, the freezing impact swallowing them whole. Nyra's lungs burned instantly as the current dragged her deeper, spinning her through the icy dark. She fought upward, kicking with everything she had left and just as panic threatened to consume her, she felt Kael's hand find hers again. He refused to let go.
Together they broke the surface. Nyra gasped, pulling freezing air into her aching lungs and for several seconds neither of them spoke, they simply floated there, catching their breath. Far above, the hole they'd fallen through was already vanishing beneath clouds of dust and broken stone.
There would be no climbing back.
"We're trapped," Nyra whispered.
Kael looked around the enormous cavern. "No." His voice stayed steady. "We're somewhere no one has entered in centuries."
A faint blue glow illuminated the underground lake. Ancient crystals covered the cavern walls, casting shimmering reflections across the water, while ruined stone bridges stretched toward enormous pillars carved with wolves, moons and crowns.
Nyra turned slowly in the water. "What is this place?"
Kael's expression grew thoughtful. "I've heard stories."
"What kind of stories?"
"My grandmother used to speak of a forgotten city beneath Blackthorn." He paused. "I never believed it existed."
A low rumble echoed through the cavern, not from above, but from somewhere deep within the ruins. Nyra and Kael exchanged a glance. Neither of them liked the sound.
Then, far across the underground lake, ancient torches began bursting into blue flame, one after another, as though something had just woken.
The blue flames spread through the ruins in a slow, deliberate chain, one torch, then another, then dozens more, until within seconds the forgotten city beneath Blackthorn was bathed in an eerie sapphire glow.
Nyra swam toward the nearest stone platform. Kael climbed out first and turned back immediately, offering her his hand.
She looked at it a moment. "I can manage."
"I know." His hand stayed extended. "But the rocks are slippery."
After a brief hesitation, she accepted it. His grip was warm despite the freezing water and for an instant the mate bond stirred again, a quiet pulse neither of them acknowledged. Nyra let go quickly.
They stood in silence, water dripping from their clothes, the city stretching out before them. Massive stone buildings, worn smooth by centuries, lined a broad avenue. Moon symbols were carved into every archway and statues of wolves stood like silent guardians over deserted streets. It felt less like a ruin and more like a place waiting for someone to return.
Kael walked to the nearest statue, brushing centuries of dust from its base. An inscription appeared beneath the wolf's paws and he frowned.
"It's written in the Old Lunar Tongue."
"You can read it?"
"My grandmother insisted I learn."
Nyra folded her arms. "What does it say?"
He read the faded words aloud. "When the Moon's Chosen walk together, the forgotten throne shall awaken."
The words lingered in the still air.
Nyra forced a laugh. "Ancient prophecies."
"You don't believe them?"
"I believe people use prophecies to manipulate others." The answer came too quickly, and Kael didn't argue, he simply noticed the bitterness behind it.
Before he could respond, a soft metallic sound echoed through the city. Click.
Nyra spun, dagger already in hand. Nothing. Only empty streets.
Then, click, again, this time from above. Both of them looked up. The stone wolves lining the rooftops had changed position.
Kael's hand moved slowly to the hilt of his sword. "They weren't facing us before."
As if answering him, every stone wolf turned its head at once, crystal eyes glowing silver.
Nyra took a cautious step back. "I don't like this place."
Neither did Kael.
A deep voice rolled across the empty streets, coming from everywhere and nowhere at once. "Few who enter the City of Ashen Moon deserve to leave it."
"Who's there?" Kael demanded.
Silence. Then the sound of heavy footsteps echoed through the avenue, and from the far end of the city emerged an elderly man in silver robes, his long white hair reaching his waist, leaning on a carved staff shaped like a crescent moon. Despite his age, his back was perfectly straight.
His pale eyes settled first on Kael, then on Nyra and his calm expression shattered. The staff slipped from his hand and clattered onto the stone.
"No." His voice trembled. "It cannot be."
Nyra frowned. "Do you know me?"
The old man approached slowly, tears filling his eyes. "I prayed I would live long enough to see this day."
Kael stepped between them instinctively. "Identify yourself."
The stranger bowed. "I am Eryndor." He placed a hand over his heart. "The last Keeper of the Ashen Moon."
Kael had never heard the title before. "What is this place?"
Eryndor looked around at the silent city. "The first capital of the werewolf kingdoms."
Nyra's eyes widened. "Impossible."
"It was erased from history."
"It was hidden," Eryndor corrected gently. "To protect a secret." His gaze returned to Nyra. "And that secret has finally come home."
Her heartbeat quickened. "I don't understand."
"You will." The old man bent down, picked up his staff, and smiled sadly, then his expression turned grave. "But first, we must leave."
Kael's instincts sharpened. "Why?"
Eryndor looked toward the darkness behind them. "Because you were followed."
At first neither of them heard anything. Then came the unmistakable sound of boots striking stone, not one pair. Many. Torches appeared at the entrance to the underground city, dozens of them.
The Shadow Order had found the hidden city.
At the front of the advancing soldiers stood Master Varek. His cold eyes locked onto Nyra and when he smiled, there was no warmth in it.
"Run," he said softly. "Let's see if destiny can outrun death."
