Chapter 16

1391 Words
Rachel After giving me a brief time to rest, Chase went back to giving me intense workloads. I knew that the rare rest time wasn't going to last long. He told me to cherish it himself. Soon, the time to sign off my work came and I wrapped up everything I had to do quickly. Chase smiled as he saw how excited I was to sign to get off work. “You don’t have to behave like I locked you in hell.” Chase said with a smile still on his lips. I shrugged before I walked out of the building. Chase was following me with his long legs. One of his steps was two of mine. “Let me take you home.” Chase proposed and I was about to agree. The exact moment I was about to agree, my phone rang. It was Alexis. I had totally forgotten about the workers' get-together she told me about. I answered her call. "Hello Rachel." She began. "Hello Alexis." I greeted her back. "I see you are about to leave so I said should remind you about the thing I mentioned to you." Alexis said and I frowned as soon as she finished speaking. I looked around and I saw her at the entrance of the building that served as Steel Cell Group's headquarters. She waved at me when I noticed her. My heart sank. It was like she was monitoring me. How did she know when Chase and I got off work? I and Chase even stayed longer than our usual closing time today. How did she manage to know the exact time I was about to enter Chase's car? It was highly suspicious to me. I narrowed my eyes and I ended the call. I waved at her too. She took that as a cue to approach me. I turned to Chase. "I will have to turn down your invitation. I have a workers' party to attend." I said to Chase. "Just be careful." Chase replied my words before he got into his car. He zoomed off. "Let's head to the place the party is going to be held in." I said to Alexis with a smile. I didn't confront her about her suspicious behavior. I would not get what I was supposed to hear. I don't know what these coworkers are planning but I intend to find out. I can not continue working with these people without knowing their characters firsthand first. It is a very renowned fact in the computer science world that knowledge is power. Besides, with the way things are looking now, they would try to invite me to another workers' party if I did not attend this one. It was better to attend this particular party. It would save me time and stress. "Okay, let's go." Alexis said with a smile, "The location we chose is in walkable range." I didn't say anything. When she saw how quiet I was, she shut up. Soon, we got to the place they chose. It was a restaurant that doubled as a KTV bar. The restaurant had two floors. The first floor was for the normal clients. There was a huge round stage that had some musical instruments connected to it. All the sitting arrangements and the restaurant's decorations faced the round stage. The upper floor was for special clients. Guests could book private rooms at a price that was slightly higher than the normal cost. Alexis did not stop at the ground floor that normal guests used, she took me upstairs. 'I hope Alexis wasn't going to do something to harm me.' I mused to myself. I liked her vibe and I did not want her to be among those that might harm me. Her actions of keeping tabs on me was a red flag though. The private rooms had numbers specific to them. Alexis opened the door to the private room and she led me inside. I don't know if the designs of the private rooms was generic. The private room I was in had multicolored lights that was swirling in a soft glow. Comfy chairs was set in a circle around a large low table. Drinks and other refreshments was on the table. A semicircular stage stood at the far end of the private room. Two microphones connected to standing poles were on the stage. The microphones was part of the musical instruments present around the stage. As soon as I and Alexis entered, all the people in the room turned their eyes to us. I was a little uncomfortable but I shrugged it of. "Everyone, this is Rachel. She is Chase's new secretary." Alexis introduced before she left me to my own devices. She took a seat beside a girl that had black bob hair framing her face. She and the girl began a conversation. I appreciated the fact that she introduced me to the group at least. She did not dump me here without any further actions on her part. Patricia was here. She was staring at me with venomous eyes. I had no choice but to notice her when her stare threatened to burn through my skin. I searched for a chair that wasn't very crowded and I sat down. I did not touch any drinks or refreshments. I brought out my phone and I began playing a game. Some of the women that was on the same couch with me shifted away from me a little. I did not behave like I noticed their behavior. Nobody talked to me. I did not say a word to the other. They made sure I came, they would soon show their foxy tails soon. I just had to wait. I should not be disappointed when Alexis behaved like she didn't just enthusiastically invite me here. Still, I was little disappointed. She might not be among those that planned to actively harm me but she was surey privy to what might occur here. A girl was discussing something with Patricia. Patricia was replying but she would look at me from time to time. I continued to be busy with my phone. The lady that had be conversing with Patricia opened a new bottle. She poured the contents in the bottle into a new cup. She stood up and walked up to me. I did not look up from my phone. They were not the only one that could ignore people, I could do it too. "Hello Rachel, sorry for our rough manners." The lady said, "I am Polly." 'Well, two Ps to make two pigs.' I muttered in my mind before locking my phone screen. I looked at her. "You guys were pretty rude but what can I say. Your apology is accepted by the way." I smiled as I insulted them implicitly. Polly's face turned into a bright shade of red. "You!" She wanted to continue but I tiltedy head to the side. "Oh, you were not sincere with your apology? That is the only reason I can come up with for your anger. I don't understand why you are pissed." I said as I pretended to be in thought. She did not say anything for sometime. Even with the smile on my lips, my hands clenched. The reason why Polly did not fight back in a way that all hell would break lose is because she wants something from me. She held the drink she recently poured to me. "This is a token of our apology. Please accept it." Polly said with an demure expression on her face. The red color that came from her embarrassment earlier had faded away. I didn't reach out to take the glass cup. I felt like they had done something to it. All their weird actions finally boiled down to this scheme. I recalled what had happened in the school reunion banquet I had attended. I felt like a familiar scenerio was brewing. When Polly saw that I didn't reach out to take the glass cup from her, she frowned. "Are you looking down on our sincere apologies? Or is it because of something else?" Polly questioned with a passive aggressive tone. She was looking between me and Patricia when she was speaking. I frowned too. She was trying to rally up the public's opinions against me.
