Chapter 25

Rachel Days flew by and the chosen time for the employees' event to hold was here. I was already looking forward to a day I and Chase could relax. Chase was powerful. I knew this but even the most powerful elephant can be ravaged by a million ants. No one was all-powerful. Only God can satisfy those conditions. Chase was still mortal. Since he came back, he was just focused on stabilizing the Steel Cell Group. These past few days, our only way of hanging out with each other was through the phone. It was always through texts and video calls. Although I was working with him, there wasn't any space to just be alone with each other. I was the person that was closest to him but we were behaving like we were strangers that was poles apart. His work was really tedious. I did not want to disturb him so I bottled all my grievances inside me. This is the reason why I was looking forward to this outing very much. I would not be working and I would be able to spend quality time with my boyfriend. Yes. Chase had finally put a label on our relationship. He was even planning to get me to meet his family after this outing. I was as nervous as ever but I continued motivate myself. I prayed that Chase's family would like me. The only people in his family was his grandmother and his mother. His grandfather passed away when he was still abroad and his father died when he was little. I admired his grandfather. After his son died, he took on the reins of the Steel Cell Group. He did all this because of Chase. He wanted Chase to have a normal childhood. He didn't want Chase to be burdened with the responsibility of handling a multi-billion corporation. His protection lasted until Chase got to college though. Then, Chase had to go abroad. I smiled as I thought of his family. I was happy that Chase was telling me about his family. He did not want me to be unprepared. Whenever he mentioned his grandmother, his brows would furrow. That action was enough for me. His grandmother was clearly not easy to deal with. I just hoped that she likes me. Even the strictest person would be softer towards people they cherish. I wanted to marry Chase, I did not want our newly bloomed romance to be cut short at its infancy. Today was the day the outing would hold. My superiors had clearly sent all the information we needed to the group chat. A coaster bus was going to take us to the location we were headed to. There was no need to pack any heavy luggage. I just needed a swimsuit and a change of clothes for any emergencies. I packed everything I needed into a small backpack. "You are leaving now?" My mother asked as she typed away at her laptop. Sometimes, her typing speed make me suspect if she was human. I was a computer scientist and programmer. Still, I could not type like that. I nodded. "Enjoy for two! I am going to ask you how your trip went." My mother said before she turned her focus to what she was inputting into her laptop. "I will." I said before I dashed out of the house. Norman had been taking his job pretty serious lately. I don't see him around very much. It was like he was a ghost or something of that sort. His car wasn't in the garage either. Thankfully, I was not going to use his car for anything today. It would have been a painful thing to realize his car was gone when I needed it. The only people that had a car in our family was my father and brother. My mother was supposed to get hers this year but the high cost of things shot that idea down. Since there was already two people with cars in the family, there was no hurry. My mother always considered the overall situation of things. I hailed a taxi and told the driver my destination. We were told to gather at Steel Cell Group's premises. The taxi dropped me off at the Steep Cell Group's parking lot. I paid the fare and alighted. It seemed I was a little late. There was already a huge group waiting in the parking lot. I checked the time on my phone screen before heaving a sigh of relief. I wasn't late, these people were just too early. I could literally feel the excitement they were exuding because of this trip. I searched the crowd with my eyes. I did not notice any of the people that was trying to realize Patricia's evil scheme. None of them was present. Chase had begun to act. No wonder Patricia phoned me with desperation. No, it wasn't desperation. It was a threat. I knew it was unlikely for this matter to end here. Even if those people that sought to harm me was fired, I am sure they would still have relations with the other coworkers here. I just hoped that the scheme I almost fell for won't have any repeats. Still, I would be extra cautious. I would not take any type of drink from anyone and I would not consume any opened drink I mistakenly left for even a minute. Immediately I dropped from the taxi, all eyes shifted to me before moving away. I stopped any urge to go out of my way to make friends in my workplace. The person that would end up with me would come if it was destined. I did not want to force anything. The result that came from trying to make a friend in this place was a drugged drink. There was only two coaster buses available. One was for the females and the other was for the males. According to the idle chatter I listened to, the higher ups have already gotten to the hot spring resort. A man wearing simple shorts and a t-shirt stood in front of the group. It was Mr Briggs. I thought the higher ups had left. It seemed like Mr Briggs was left behind to take care of the other employees. "You all should enter into the buses in an orderly line. The trip is going to take two hours so prepare your spirit. I don't want to hear any complaints." Mr Briggs said. A backpack was hanging on his right shoulder. I made him look younger. Everybody separated into two lines. One for the males and one for the females. Then, they began going into the buses. I managed to get myself a spot in the middle of the female line. I did not want to seat at the front but I didn't like the back seats either. I settled for the middle seats. As I was entering into the bus, I saw a shadow. It was a woman. The thing that made my heart thump was the fact that the shadow resembled Julie. I halted my action of stepping into the bus. I turned around to look at every inch of the packing lot carefully. My search yielded no results. I could not find the shadow of the woman that had a striking resemblance with Julie in the parking space. I narrowed my eyes. "Hey, are you going to move?" A female voice said. I stepped aside when I realized that I was blocking the queue. After the lady passed me, I scanned the parking lot again. This time, I caught the shadow going out of the Steel Cell Group's premises. My heart sank. After seeing the shadow a second time, I could confirm that this mysterious shadow was Julie. It wasn't a person that just resembled her a little. I used my eyes to check every faces that was in the parking lot. I crosschecked the male section too. I didn't see Julie again. Things were getting trickier. What was Julie doing here? When she tried to set me up with Ted, Chase promised to deal with her. Chase was a man of his word. I knew that he had truly acted against her. She should be miserable now. I don't know why she had enough time on her hands to come find me. I smiled. I haven't even gotten my own personal revenge on her yet but she herself came to seek destruction. I don't know why she was here but I knew for sure that she was here for me. "Miss Rachel, are you not getting in?" Mr Briggs said. He was the last male to enter the coaster bus. He was staring at me strangely. I looked around and discovered that everyone was already inside their coaster buses. I was the only one standing in front of the bus's door like an i***t. I had let the thoughts of Julie distract me. I don't know if I was being paranoid but I scanned the parking space with my eyes for the umpteenth time. I can never be too careful with people like Julie. I would have gotten something like a restraining order as precaution. Still, that route wouldn't work because Julie hadn't done anything drastic enough for the police to take action. Besides, the one time she did something criminally offensive, there was no direct evidence. I can not let the police arrest her for texting Ted. I had let Chase handle it but it seems she hadn't learnt her lesson at all. I didn't want to get lost in my thoughts again so I entered into the bus. The coaster bus was filled to the brim and the only free seat was at the back. I had to seat at the place I was going to avoid. I looked out of the bus's glass window that I had access too from my position. I did not see anything. I gave up on combing through the parking space. I was not the one that should be nervous. Julie would be bursting with the urge to get revenge on me. She would show her foxy tail sooner or later. I just had to wait.
