Rachel
Immediately we reached our house, it was time for choosing how the outfits and clothes would be arranged in my closet.
We spent tiring hours arranging the clothes and before we knew it, the time that had been decided for the school reunion was close.
My mother knew that this was my first time doing something like this so she planned to start slowly. She wanted me to be steady in my improvement.
She did not want to throw me into the expert level glam. She wanted me to start with the basics.
I never knew that categorizing how and where my clothes should go was this exhausting.
After going back and forth between the outfits that caught her eyes, my mother finally settled on the beautiful red dress that was decorated with sequins.
I knew she chose this dress with malicious intentions. She had not given up on teaching Julie a lesson.
After freshening up, I had to sit down for minutes. My mother said she was going to do a bare makeup but I still had to sit for hours for something that was called a bare or natural makeup.
Soon, I was as ready as I could be.
My mother smiled when she saw me in all my glory.
"One more thing. I want you to change your walking style. You can't be walking like you are going to fight a war." My mother cautioned and I grimaced.
Another rule!
Why can I not walk as I wish? Walking still had a rule to follow?
I was almost tempted to just remove the dress and wash all my makeup off. For a moment, all I wanted was to go back to the plain old Rachel with her boyish clothes.
My boyish clothes was more comfortable.
Then, Chase's beautiful face appeared in my mind and the discomfort I was feeling was alleviated.
I took a deep breath and let it all out in a sigh.
I had to remember that I was taking this step because I wanted to chase my dreams. I can not just give up now.
I wanted to ask Norman of he was going to go to the party too. I would love it if he goes to the school reunion with me.
I tried to walk carefully so I would not seem like I was marching to a war, according to my mother.
Norman's door was locked but I knew where he kept his spare key. That key was basically my key now.
I opened the door and walked in.
Norman was gaming on his phone this time around. He wasn't on his computer.
"Why have you been neglecting your job at the automobile store? Stop being a lazy bum!" I said.
Norman's absence from his job did not come to my mind. I had been preoccupied with the thoughts of Chase.
Guilt clouded my mind for a moment.
"My boss gave me a few days off." Normal replied without raising his head.
"Why?" I persisted in my questioning.
"I asked for a leave myself. No need to try and sniff around for a wrongdoing." Norman replied with a snort before he went back to keeping his lips shut as he played his game.
I cleared my throat.
"Hey bro, how do I look?" I asked.
If there was anybody that would give their honest opinion on my getup, it would be Norman.
His mouth had no filter. He would say it as it was.
"What are you trying no—" Norman raised his head to roll his eyes at me as he spoke but the rest of his words hung in his throat after he saw me.
His eye rolling action stopped dramatically too.
"What is this? Why are you like this? Is this a prank?" Norman totally abandoned his game and he rose from the bed swiftly before arriving at my side.
I had to curb my urge to give Norman a resounding smack.
All the words I used to praise him had gone to waste.
Why was he reacting like I was dressed like a madwoman?
His reaction was too extreme.
"Mom! What did you do to Rachel? Why is she dressed so weirdly?" He exclaimed.
Footsteps sounded and my mother appeared.
"What did I do? I did nothing. She is beautiful so I just highlighted her charms." My mother said with her arms folded.
She leaned on the doorframe as she appreciated her work once again.
"She is right. There is nothing wrong with me, I wanted to dress like this by my own accord." I explained but Norman was not having it.
He approached me and grabbed my hands in his.
"If mom is threatening you, tell me! No need to succumb under her threats." Norman said seriously and I could not hold back my urge to laugh anymore.
My mother had always been going on and on about my lifestyle and dressing code. I could see why Norman reacted like this but it was still funny.
"What do you mean by saying this?" I barely manage to get the words out through my laughing spree, "You are making her sound like a serial killer or something."
Norman did not say anything but he directed a accusing look towards our mother.
"Aside from that, where are you going?" Norman asked after he settled his emotions. He still darted my mother accusing and aggrieved looks from time to time.
My mother did not mind his gazes.
"That is why I came to your room in the first place. I wanted to ask if you would be able to go with me. You can call Chase too. We would show our group the might of the Tiger three once more." I said excitedly.
"There is no might of the Tiger Three when you are dressed like this but I would go with you to the party. I would call Chase too. I can not let those pesky boys get near you." Norman agreed grudgingly.
"Yes!" I fist bumped the air.
I was sorry to say this about my brother but only the thought of him calling Chase over to the reunion party boosted my mood.
My target was finally taking the bait.
I can not dress up for nothing.
I preferred my comfortable t-shirt and jeans anyday. I was making a brave gesture by trying to start dressing in clothes I did not feel comfortable in.
He had to see it.
If Norman had not agreed to call him over, I planned to call him myself.
I can not let my hard work go to waste.
I was not like those people that would do things without letting the other party know.
Chase was my prey. He must know of my new look.
Without my mother saying anything, I knew that the first step in seducing a man was to get him to notice you.
Why would you fall for someone you did not notice or take any note of?
Norman looked at me weirdly, "You are really excited about this party."
I stumped down my joy when I remembered that Norman does not know of my plan to seduce his best friend.
"Go get changed. I am already done with my own preparations and there is no more time. We are already running late." I instructed before leaving his room. Mom was on my tail.
"Remember, no fist fights. Fight with your words instead and don't let anyone embarrass you. You look beautiful." My mother's reassured me before she went to the master bedroom she shared with my father.
Her words made me notice the sweat gathering on my palms. I did not even notice that I was nervous.
She helped me to calm my nervous energy.
I felt warmth and I was ready to brave the eyes and talks that would put me in the position of the main protagonist.
People would talk and they had a right to speak. Their right would always be enforced unless they speak ill of me.
Some might still speak ill of me and they would not be punished.
The world can be like that sometimes.
Besides, trying to be with Chase would cause a controversy. This was just the beginning.
Regardless of other people's opinions, all I had to know was that I was beautiful.
I was going to use this beauty to trap Chase.
Finally Norman came downstairs after I had been waiting for what felt like hours.
I glared at him, "Why did you take this long?"
Norman smiled toothily, "I have to look beautiful so I would not be outshined by you."
"So now, I look beautiful to you? You weren't singing this kind of tune minutes ago." I said with my eyebrows raised.
"My eyes are getting used to seeing you like this so your natural beautiful shined through." He said with a smile before walking out of the door.
He did not wait for me to reply.
I hurried after him and I sat in the passenger seat that was beside the driver seat.
Norman took the driver's seat.
"What about Chase? Isn't he coming?" I asked. As I asked my question, my heart hung in my mouth.
"He is coming. He said he would go to the party himself. Why are you weirdly enthusiastic?" Norman questioned as he eyed me oddly.
This was the second time he was asking this type of question.
I had to keep my excitement on a low frequency.
Norman was smart but he was daft in some ways. To be precise, he was daft in romantic ways. There was a reason he was still single at this time.
I knew he would never figure out that I wanted Chase. Still, I had to be careful.
At his affirmation of the fact that Chase would be coming to the school, my mood had brightened and I was in the mood to joke.
I answered his question, "I am enthusiastic because I am going to catch a big fish. A fish that had been in my sights for a very long time."
