"Someone is broadcasting an unauthorized signal from inside Sia's room right now!"
Sean's parau voice growled through the tactical earbud with a deadly chill that made Gumay's chest tighten. The chief of security turned on his heel instantly, his heavy combat boots remaining completely silent against the wet flagstones of the north courtyard.
"I am moving to intercept immediately, Sir," Gumay replied, keeping his voice down to a quiet whisper that dissolved into the cool night air. "Maintain the internal lockdown from the command hub."
"Do not let anyone escape the north wing alive," Sean commanded from the terminal room, the cold metallic click of his control keys active in the background. "If that signal completes its transmission to the outer sector, I will personally burn down every floor of this house."
Gumay cut the line and drew his silenced sidearm. The damp fragrance of night-blooming orchids in the courtyard gardens was choked by the lingering scent of synthetic oil and smoke from the earlier attack. Rain dripped steadily from the clipped hedges, creating a soft, rhythmic patter that masked his calculated approach across the grass.
The north courtyard sat directly below Sia's sanctuary in the central spire. It was engineered to be a complete dead zone, shielded by low-frequency dampeners built into the heavy white stone walls to keep external eyes away from her.
As Gumay rounded a massive marble fountain, his tactical visor picked up a subtle heat signature crouching deep in the shadows of the stone trellis. The figure was draped in a dark thermal cloak that actively blurred its silhouette against the wet foliage.
"Hold your position," Gumay whispered, creeping through the garden without rustling a single leaf, his weapon aimed directly at the center of the intruder's back.
The shadowed figure ignored the command entirely, its gloved hands working frantically over a compact, military-grade transmitter attached to the base of the stone wall. A tiny blue diode blinked erratically on the casing, attempting to punch through the estate's localized jammer.
"I said do not move," Gumay repeated, dropping his tone into a lethal register as he stepped into the pale moonlight, aligning the sights of his gun with the spy's spine.
The intruder spun around with terrifying speed, flinging a cluster of sharp micro-blades straight toward his throat.
Gumay ducked sharply to the left, feeling the cold rush of air as the blades embedded themselves into the wooden trellis behind him. He closed the distance in a fraction of a second, driving his heavy boot straight into the intruder's ribs with full force.
The spy let out a choked gasp, crashing hard against the wet flagstones. Before the operative could draw a backup knife, Gumay slammed his heel onto the intruder's right wrist, pinning the arm to the stone until a sharp crack echoed through the quiet garden.
The operative muffled a scream, writhing on the ground as Gumay knelt down, driving his knee heavily into the spy's chest to pin him completely to the floor.
"Who authorized this signal?" Gumay demanded, pressing the hot barrel of his silenced pistol straight into the spy's jawline. "Speak before I make this painful for you."
The operative spat blood onto the wet marble, his teeth stained crimson in the faint light. "You are already dead, guard dog. The upper families know what Vane is hiding in this fortress."
"Wrong answer," Gumay stated calmly, pulling the trigger without a single flinch.
A soft cough from the silenced weapon ended the operative's breath instantly. The body went completely limp beneath Gumay's weight, the rain quickly washing the fresh blood into the dark garden soil.
Gumay stood up slowly, scanning the surrounding shadows for any additional threats lurking in the brush. The garden returned to absolute silence, save for the steady drip of water from the leaves above.
He reached down to inspect the physical transmitter planted against the masonry. The device was a long-range listening bug designed to tap into the acoustic signatures of Sia's room above and broadcast them past the primary perimeter shield.
"Transmitter neutralized, Sir," Gumay reported into his comms, tearing the device from the stone wall and crushing the internal micro-chip between his gloved fingers. "The intruder has been eliminated."
"Did he manage to send any data?" Sean's raspy voice came through the earbud, tight with possessive rage that threatened to boil over.
"No, Sir. The signal was severed before the secure handshake could complete," Gumay replied, crouching back down beside the corpse to conduct a thorough sweep of the pockets. "I am searching the body for identification now."
Gumay unzipped the operative's tactical jacket, pulling back the thermal lining to check for hidden storage drives. The man carried no standard identification cards, no digital tokens, and no marked weapons that could be traced through the public database.
He grabbed the spy by the chin, turning the head side to side to check for biometric implants or sub-dermal tags behind the earlobes.
As he pulled back the stiff fabric of the operative's high-collared shirt, a tiny glint of metallic thread caught the pale moonlight. Gumay paused, using his combat knife to slice open the reinforced seam along the inner collar.
Hidden inside the dark fabric was a custom-embroidered metallic patch depicting a coiled silver serpent wrapped around a broken gear.
Gumay's eyes narrowed into slits as he recognized the high-tier insignia instantly. It was a private crest reserved only for the inner circle of the rival syndicate controlling the northern energy sectors.
"Sir, you need to see this," Gumay said, his voice hardening as he took a high-resolution scan of the emblem using his visor. "The spy was not working for a street gang or an independent contractor from the lower sectors."
"Who sent him?" Sean demanded instantly, the sound of rapid keyboard strikes pausing on his end of the transmission.
Gumay stood over the lifeless body, watching the cold rain wash over the metallic crest resting in his palm.
"It is the private crest of the Vane family's primary rival," Gumay answered, his tone heavy with grave realization. "They are actively targeting Lady Sia from the inside."
