"Look at that," Elena whispered, her voice carrying a venomous satisfaction that echoed in the quiet room. "It seems our little conversation was being recorded by someone else all along, primary wife."
Sia stared down at the small metallic bug glistening in the pool of tea. The air in the room instantly curdled into ice.
Before Sia could form a response, the double doors of the tea lounge slid open with a sharp pneumatic hiss. Sean stood in the threshold, his tall frame blocking out the corridor light like an imposing wall of shadow.
"Step away from the table, both of you," Sean commanded, his raspy voice vibrating through the polished floorboards with absolute authority.
Elena stood up gracefully, smoothing her indigo gown with a faint smirk. "You arrived just in time, husband. Someone appears to have bugged our private morning tea."
"I did not ask for a commentary, Elena," Sean said, his dark eyes locking onto Sia. "Gumay will escort you back to your quarters immediately. Sia, come with me to the master study."
Sia took a slow, steadying breath and stood up from her velvet armchair. "I have done nothing wrong, Sean."
"I am not accusing you, Sia," Sean replied softly, his voice carrying an intense, possessive weight. "I am giving an order. Move."
Sia bit her lip, holding her head high as she walked past Elena and stepped out into the grand hallway. Sean followed right behind her, his heavy, measured footsteps sounding like a drumbeat of approaching doom.
They walked in tense silence toward the top floor of the central spire. The security guards posted along the corridor bowed their heads as Sean passed, but none dared to look him in the eye.
When they reached the master study, the massive double doors sealed shut behind them with a heavy, automated click. The room was bathed in the cool blue glow of the master surveillance terminals.
"Sit down," Sean said, pointing toward the heavy leather armchair positioned directly in front of his oak desk.
"I prefer to stand," Sia replied, crossing her arms tightly across her chest. "If you summoned me here to interrogate me about Elena's teacup, you are wasting your time."
Sean walked around his desk, resting his cybernetic right hand on the dark wood surface. He leaned forward slightly, his gaze piercing right through her.
"Do you know who placed that listening device, Sia?" Sean asked, his parau voice dropping into a quiet, dangerous frequency.
"I assume it was one of Elena's handlers, or perhaps your own security team," Sia countered, glaring back at him. "You monitor every breath taken in this house anyway. Why act surprised?"
"That frequency was not mapped to my network," Sean stated, his jaw clenching tightly. "It was an unencrypted signal designed to pick up your vocal profile. Someone is trying to confirm your identity."
Sia felt a cold bead of sweat trace down her neck. "Confirm my identity? Or confirm that I am the daughter of the man who tried to murder you?"
Sean's eyes flared with a sudden, dark fire. He stepped around the desk, closing the distance between them until he was standing mere inches away from her.
"You bring up your father as if you want me to punish you for his crimes," Sean growled, his hands coming up to grip the arms of her chair, trapping her within his space.
"I bring him up because it is the elephant in this room!" Sia shouted, her voice breaking with raw, long-suppressed emotion. "You look at me and you see the blood of your enemy! That is why you lock me in this fortress!"
"I look at you and I see the only person who kept me alive when I was bleeding in the mud," Sean roared back, his chest heaving as his iron composure cracked wide open.
The sudden shift in his demeanor made Sia catch her breath. The sheer intensity radiating from him was suffocating, filled with a wild, terrifying passion.
"Then why do you treat me like a captive?" Sia asked, her tone dropping into a desperate whisper. "You force me to sit across from a woman who wants to destroy us, and then you track my heartbeat like I am a prisoner on probation."
"Because you look for every opportunity to run away from me," Sean confessed darkly, his hands tightening on the armrests until the leather groaned under his strength. "You think freedom exists outside these gates. It does not."
"Freedom is better than living in a golden cage under your thumb," Sia replied, defying his intimidating posture.
"Outside those gates, you are a target for every corporate assassin in Neo-Veridia," Sean stated, his voice trembling with an unnatural, possessive fury. "Inside here, you are my wife. You are protected, whether you want to be or not."
"Your protection feels like a sentence, Sean," Sia said, looking directly into his dark eyes. "You don't want a wife. You want total submission."
"I want your loyalty," Sean corrected, his thumb rising to gently trace the contour of her lower lip, his touch surprisingly soft despite the harshness of his words. "I want you to stop looking at me like I am your warden."
"Trust is earned, Sean, not forced through marriage contracts and armed guards," Sia said, leaning her head back away from his touch.
Sean let out a low, dark chuckle that sent a shiver straight down her spine. "In this city, trust is a weakness that gets a blade shoved into your chest. I will not make that mistake again."
He straightened up, walking over to the main terminal interface on his desk. He tapped a sequence of keys, bringing up a complex schematic of the mansion's internal security sectors.
"From this moment on, your interactions with Elena are completely terminated," Sean commanded, his voice returning to its cold, unyielding baseline. "You will not attend tea services, you will not walk in the gardens without Gumay, and you will not leave the central wing."
"You are isolating me completely," Sia said, disbelief and anger flaring in her chest. "You are using that bug as an excuse to lock me away."
"I am removing the variables," Sean replied without looking back at her. "Elena is a snake, and her syndicate is closing in. I will not allow you to be used as a bargaining chip."
"And what if I refuse your rules?" Sia challenged, taking a step toward the exit. "What if I walk out of this room right now?"
Sean paused, his cybernetic hand hovering over the glowing terminal pad. He turned his head slowly, his expression obscured by the dim lighting of the study.
"You will not walk out, Sia," Sean said quietly. "Because this house operates on my command, and I have decided that you belong by my side."
Sia turned toward the heavy mahogany doors, raising her hand toward the door release button on the wall panel. She slammed her palm against the scanner, expecting the lock to disengage.
Instead, the scanner flashed a harsh, violent crimson. A loud, metallic deadbolt thudded into place within the doorframe, followed by the hum of an active electromagnetic barrier sealing the perimeter.
Sia spun around, her heart hammering wildly against her ribs as she stared at Sean. "What are you doing?"
Sean walked slowly toward the door, his tall frame completely cutting off her route of escape. He reached out and pressed his palm against the master panel, overriding the room's access codes entirely.
The soft blue status lights of the study turned into a deep, possessive amber.
"You asked what happens if you refuse," Sean rasped, his voice echoing in the locked room with a chilling, absolute dominance. "This room is completely soundproofed and isolated from the main security grid. No one enters, and no one leaves until you accept my terms."
Sia backed away until her spine hit the edge of his oak desk, her hands clutching the polished wood behind her as she looked at the man who held her entire life in his hands.
"You cannot keep me locked in your study, Sean," Sia whispered, her voice trembling despite her best efforts to stay strong.
"I can, and I will," Sean vowed, stepping into her personal space until his shadow completely swallowed her frame. He leaned down, his face inches from hers as he delivered his ultimatum. "You will sign the updated household mandate, Sia. You will grant me absolute authority over your protection, or we will stay in this locked room until the entire city burns down outside."
