Evelyn was so angry, only staring at the door of his room for a split second caused it to open with a loud bang. Arthmael had some answers to give too, Evelyn had had enough of him and the blind love and devotion of his towards his King.
"Evelyn, how can you walk inside my room like this in the middle of the day?! Someone could see." He rushed to close the door, not before looking outside to see for any sign of guards or maids or anyone else who could've witnessed the Queen walk inside the Commander's room like she had done it multiply times by now. And Evelyn was never that careless when it came to them. She was bold, even provoking and flirty sometimes, but not careless. She cared about him, too deeply she had asked him to reject her just so his life wouldn't be ruined, yet here she was opening the door with so much power it could be heard from miles away. "Evelyn, what's going on?" Worriedly, he asked after seeing the anger radiating her body, the oceans in her eyes almost turning white.
"What's going on?!" Her voice dripped sarcasm, and Arthmael saw the way she was almost losing control. He made a step towards her, maybe to take her in his arms, calm her down, make her talk to him. Whatever it was, they could talk and find a solution together, however she made a step back, rising one of her hands to stop him from making another step further. "That is your father figure, Arthmael?"
"Can you tell me what's going on so I can understand—"
"BLOODY ANSWER ME!" She screamed to him. "Answer me, damn it! That is your father figure? That man who r***s girls every night, who has the audacity to think they actually want to be in his bed?"
Arthmael froze, looking for any sign of joke or even lie in her face. And there was none. There was only Evelyn and an extreme amount of anger and hurt all mixed up together on her beautiful features.
And Arthmael couldn't believe what he just heard, he simply couldn't. There had to be some sort of misunderstanding, that couldn't be true. He refused to believe so.
"Did you know?" Her voice had turned calm, cold, her eyes haunting, for a second scaring him. "Did you know your father forced himself upon young unprotected maids? Because if you did, I swear to God—"
"No," he cut her off, taking a few seconds to let her words sink in. "God, no Evelyn." He ran his hands through his dark hair and in another time, Evelyn would've found that attractive. "No, that isn't true, that can't be true, he would never—"
Evelyn laughed, a laugh so bitter he could feel the bitterness of it in his mouth. "He would never, huh?" Once again, she laughed at his foolishness. "So it isn't true I walked into his room and found my maid, my own maid, my own closest friend in his bed? It isn't true he admitted it to me himself, even blamed me for not fulfilling my duties to him? It isn't true he tried doing the same to me, again, if I didn't know how to protect myself?"
A loud growl tore from the insides of his throat, and he only saw dark after that. There was no other feeling but the need to tear apart anyone who had even thought of hurting his precious mate, even if that anyone was Alpha Robert. He didn't care.
"Arthmael."
"He did what?" He growled, reaching for the door in the speed of the light.
"Arthmael!" She called again, trying to make him come to his senses and not do something stupid like attack King Robert and most probably regret later.
"How dare he touch you, I'll f*****g kill him—"
"Arthmael, stop!" She yelled, and this time, he did stop. "So you're mad now he tried to do the same to your mate, huh?"
He narrowed his eyes at her. Why was she mad that he wanted to protect her?
"Exactly, my goddamn mate! Do you think I'll let him do something like that to you just because of who he is to me?"
Evelyn ran her hands through her hair furiously. "I can protect myself just fine!" She held her chin up proudly, making Arthmael admire her even more. "Doesn't it matter to you that he has done the same to other women as well?"
Arthmael stared at the flame in her eyes, and for a second he was scared she hated him. And with that, he'd never be able to live. "Of course it does, Evelyn, of course it does." The truth was, he still couldn't wrap his mind around it. The Alpha Robert he knew wouldn't do that.
"Then you should've protected them!" The accusation in her voice was unbearable, it made him feel so goddamn guilty. And actually he was, he knew that now.
"I didn't know, damn it! Do you think I would let something like this happen if I knew?"
"Then you should've known!" She gritted her teeth together. "Aren't you the bloody Commander, aren't you supposed to protect these people?"
His shoulder fell and he looked away, not bearing to look at her anymore.
Her next words hurt more than a silver knife piercing his chest. Way way more. "You're a hypocrite. You and everyone else here, you're all hypocrites. You're blind. And you know what, you want to be blind. Deep down you know exactly what a man he is, you just like the comfort of his lies way more than the bitter truth, the fact that the one you consider a father is nothing more than an ugly monster." Evelyn saw the way hurt mirrored his dark eyes, but she was too hurt herself not to keep going. "Would you love him, as a person, would you be able to love him if he didn't come to you that day, when you were only a child?"
The world around him stopped at the mention of that day. Of that miserable day he had tried that much to forget, that no one had ever dared mentioning it to him. No one but his own mate. "I suggest you to stop, Evelyn."
"Why? Because the truth hurts?"
"EVELYN!" He was a second away from shifting. Gritting his teeth together, he whispered, "Enough."
"You're blind, Arthmael. And maybe, when the times comes that you'll be able to see behind the blind devotion you have for him, it'll be too late. I'll be long gone."
Slowly, she walked out of his room, not wiping away the tears that silently flowed down her face. Maybe, she had lost her mate for good today. And maybe she'd regret later. Later when the anger would be replaced by the longing for him, but she had needed to let it all out. If she wouldn't be true to him and herself just because she was scared of losing him, then she'd be a hypocrite herself.
Yet it didn't mean the hurt on his face, on his broken voice wouldn't haunt her at nights, because it would.
When she walked inside her room, she was welcomed by the sight of Annie, sat down on the edge of the bed with her head low despite the fact she had heard the door cracking. Evelyn had completely forgotten she had asked Annie to wait for her in her room.
"My Queen." Annie sobbed instantly, not being able to look her Queen in the face. "I'm so sorry, so sorry about everything. I tried protesting, I tried telling him I couldn't betray you, but he—" Evelyn rushed to her friend and wrapped her arms around her body comfortingly.
"Shhh it's alright, you haven't betrayed me, you have done nothing wrong."
"But I—"
"No, Annie, listen to me," Evelyn cut her off. "I'm the one who should apologize. I should've known sooner, I should've put two and two together. I told you I was your friend and I let him..." Her voice cracked. "I'm so sorry for everything he has done to you."
Annie started sobbing even more. "My Queen..."
"It's Evelyn, how many more times should I tell you? I promise I'll never let him touch you, ever again. I promise."
The door of her room opened with a loud bang, and Evelyn's eyes widened when she looked at Robert, right there in front of her. "Out!" He ordered Annie, who did as she was told.
As much as Evelyn tried showing him she was not afraid, panic gripped her senses. For a reason she couldn't understand, him being quiet, just like now, was more frightening than him shouting at her. She'd even dare to say he had the smallest smirk pictured in his face.
"Comforting your friend?"
Evelyn swallowed down. "Why are you here?" She took the courage to ask.
The smirk on his face only grew bigger. "Because of how brave and strong you were back there on my room, I've thought of a way to reward you. You really did surprise me, I love that my woman can be that powerful even against me."
Evelyn made a step back, but in an instant, he was in front of her. "It's only a gift, don't be scared, little elf."
"Get your hands off me," she whispered, however, Robert did quite the opposite. Pulling out something from his jacket's pocket, he wrapped the cold, heavy thing around the soft skin of her neck. "What is this?" Even her voice had come out weak. Her whole body ached, her vision blurring as she fell back on the bed, the room spinning in her head. She felt weak, like someone had suffocated all the oxygen out of her body.
Like someone had suffocated the source of life out of her body
Darkness started invading her sight, but she still heard Robert chuckling, satisfied.
"What did you do to me?"
