I didn’t sleep. I barely paused to eat. I would let the horses rest for only a short while before we continued along the path I knew they had taken to reach the South. I was desperate to catch up to them, to reach them before they got trapped on the other side of the walls.
But they had a head start, and I was only slowly gaining ground. Every day, I expected to see them, but all I found were more tracks.
So many thoughts filled my head as I scooped a little water from the creek into my hands—not just about my brothers, Ashes, and our family waiting for us in the elves’ kingdom, but also about the fact that I was a dragon.
