Chapter Sixteen

“Why? Why did you have to do that?” Tamara was visibly trying to keep her calm, Daniel fought a sadistic smile from forming on his lips. Instead, he swirled around and hid his face from her. Hunching his shoulders, he hanged his head lowly and sighed deeply. A flicker of guilt flashed on Tamara’s face, she loathed upsetting her husband but she was the leader of the Ninth Order, it was her responsibility to upset him. “She is a foreigner in our lands Mara, and have you forgotten that she was accommodated by the humans? What if she is a part of their ploy?” Tamara rolled her eyes and inched towards her husband. She placed her hands on his shoulders and squeezed them, Daniel moaned gratefully. “I issued an order for her to be brought here, she did not infringe the magical border with the aim of harming us. She had no choice in the matter Daniel…” It was Daniel’s turn to roll his eyes, his wife was gnawing at his nerves. “Do you know that your brother fought for her, he tried to stop us…he was willing to die for a magical creature Mara…” Tamara felt her nerves agitating, Daniel was riling her up on purpose. “Daniel stop…please…” “Are we going to pretend that you sent us to take the girl because you had her wellbeing in mind? A mage loved by humans, loved by your family, your brothers…your father…” Tamara snapped her eyes shut and proceeded to pant heavily. She couldn’t lose control… “You see my love, I am the only one who knows you…the real you. That is why I brought your little brother…So you can see for yourself that people who you have been protecting all this time, people who persecuted and almost killed you…can direct warmth to a total stranger but not the daughter they have raised and known…Tell me, is it fair? That your father throws her a feast while you wallow in regret and self-pity over you choosing to be your true self? Is it fair?” Daniel suddenly turned around aggressively, his face inches away from Tamara. Once again, he suppressed a sadistic smile from making its way onto his lips. Tamara had spent a lifetime trying to teach herself control but it was next to impossible. Her powers were driven by her emotions and that was the one thing she could not control. Right now, his wife was being consumed with jealousy. He watched as droplets of sweat trickled down the sides of her head, he watched as he dug her nails into the soft of her palms. She was in pain as she resisted her natural body reactions to what she was feeling. Tamara began retreating from her husband, she could feel control slowly slipping away from her. “Tell me Mara, why did you bring her here?” Tamara gritted her teeth, tears were already fleeing from her tear glands. Any time from now, she would do what she did best; destroy everything. “Mara why? Why is she here on our lands?” “Because she is one of us…because she is a mage and we mages stick together…it is my duty to protect her…” “Wonderful answer love…the Ninth Order would have gobbled it up except I am not the Ninth Order…I have seen you at your worst…I know you, you were upset by the fact that she was able to coexist peacefully with the people who treated you like a dispensable insect…” “That is not true…” Except it was. The moment she had seen the girl in the vision waters, the moment she had seen her father’s gratitude towards her. Tamara had offered to help her father. She had sent the message to her brother Luke but as usual, he had ignored her. It was as if she was nonexistent to him and this hurt her. Daniel watched Tamara with genuine curiosity. He had not expected her to last this long before losing her grip on her powers. She was getting stronger.  Daniel clinched his teeth, he could not let that happen. Most of the Ninth Order already ate from her palms despite her obviously not being a fit leader. “Deep down, you want to watch her gurgle in her own blood…deep down you want her to be the dispensable insect…” She lost it. Daniel smiled evilly when he spotted the tremors on her body. Her smooth pale body suddenly began shifting color; a grim darkness hugging her milky skin. Her veins darkened and by the time she was snapping her eyes open, her pupils had vanished and all you could see was, well, darkness. Daniel had not thought his through at all. His wife c****d her head and squinted her eyes at him, an ominous smile slowly creeping on her lips. Daniel swallowed. In one fluid motion, Daniel found himself being flung across the room. His body hit the wall hard initiating immense pain throughout his length. He groaned as a cloud of grogginess began spreading in his mind. Before he could recover, he felt his arm being pulled. Daniel began to panic, what had he done? He knew that Mara would project whatever she wished to do to the girl on him. What he had wanted was to prove a point, not to get his arm yanked off! “Mara listen to me-“ Daniel screamed, Mara had twisted and broken her arm. He watched her approach him through his glassy eyes, tears were swiftly forming in them. The pain was excruciating and he had a sinking feeling that his wife had only but began. Tamara towered over her now kneeling husband and watched in disgust as he whimpered and squirmed. It was just his arm, what would he do if she broke his neck instead? Perhaps she should try that one. Daniel felt his neck twisting involuntary. Searing pain pierced through the veins embedded in his neck. He tried to fight her but he was weak and he hated her for making him feel like he was under her mercy. Which he was. Daniel could feel the miniature bones in his neck bending, any time now, they would snap and his head would hang…lifeless. The door banged open. Guzman, Martha and James charged into the room ready to tackle their leader. This was not their first encounter and over time they had learnt how to diffuse the situation. Although at times, their leader was too strong for them. Guzman froze momentarily when he saw Tamara standing intimidatingly before her husband. She was killing him and she did not even know it. In the event that she did snap his head, she would never forgive herself. “Ummh is it me or does she look scarier than usual?” James gulped back the bile threatening to fill his mouth. It had been a long time since she had lost control, what could have possibly triggered her? “Martha! You know what to do…” With one somber nod directed towards Guzman, Martha shed her humanoid form revealing her chosen animal for this occasion. Martha growled, her panther form digging into the ground and exposing her claws. She swiftly moved towards Tamara and pounced on her, shoving her claws into the small of her back. Tamara’s head jerked back, her concentration breaking. Daniel fell on the ground, coughing profusely as he strained to calm the pounding in his heart. Tamara slowly turned to view her attacker. Unfazed, Martha stood her ground. The two creatures stared each other for a while before Tamara lifted Martha from the ground and thrust her across the room towards an open window. The rest watched in horror as Martha lost her grip on the window railing and plummeted. James slowly retreated from the room, this had never happened before. What was going on? “Tamara, you need to stop this…” Tamara c****d her head to the side and regarded Guzman curiously. He held a glowing bat, the violet fire was almost mesmerizing. “You need to come back to us…the Ninth Order needs you…” Tamara began advancing towards her enemy, her thoughts already whipping up a plethora of ways that she could kill him. “I won’t hurt you Tamara…” Tamara shrugged before proceeding to stagnate his blood. Within a short while, the beast’s heart would come to a sudden halt due to lack of blood flow. “Tamara…I love you… Just the way you are.” It was a whisper, lowly uttered words meant for the two of them except James had heard. Slowly, the darkness in Tamara lifted. Her pale skin resumed her milky appearance, her veins became less pronounced as her blood regained their normal color. When she opened her eyes, her pupils were present. “Guzman…What did I do?”
