We got to the door, and she eyed the cards. “I want to take those. What’ll happen to the plants and other stuff? I want to keep them, but I’m too tired right now.”
“I’ll handle it.” I grabbed the cards and asked a nurse to save the gifts on the way out. By the time we got to the stairs, Pepper was able to walk on her own. The office door was open, and we went right in.
“You’re up already?” Jackson jumped out of his chair, and Pepper gave him a weak smile. I shut the door behind me.
“We need a ride back to her place, if you wouldn’t mind.” I said, hoping Jackson wouldn’t press me on staying to talk.
