I flinched at Meredith’s harsh words and my mouth opened and closed as I fought for the right words. But nothing came out. I expected him to tell them off, but instead he snarled, and I wasn’t sure if it was at me or Meredith. I wanted to yell at them and tell them they weren’t welcome here. But a small part of me couldn’t, and knew it was wrong to have Rhett here. Was he right? Am I embarrassed by him? Guilt pooled in the pit of my stomach, making me want to vomit. I just want them gone! “Why don’t we go out and look at the pumpkin?” I said with a nervous laugh.
