Pepper took too long to shift, even for a newborn. She whimpered in pain as her bones realigned and squeezed her eyes shut as she lay on the forest floor. I shouldn’t have made her shift. She must’ve been tired after the ritual.
But she had seemed shocked, and we couldn’t stay here any longer. I Commanded her, and she didn’t even budge. I’d seen her get away with staring Ansel in the eyes, but I’d never seen a wolf win against a Command. It was like she didn’t even hear it.
