“Move.” Rhonda pressed her hand against Pepper’s throat.
I scooted over, and she placed both hands on her chest. Rhonda muttered something, and Pepper’s body jolted. Rhonda checked her pulse again, and relief washed over her face.
“Oliver, get out here!” Rhonda yelled over her shoulder, towards the house. Everything was happening so fast; I couldn’t keep up. Focus on Pepper. She’s all that matters. I pushed my emotions away; Oliver ran out to us, and him and her exchanged words. The ringing in my ears was dissipating, and I could hear Pepper’s heartbeat. It was too fast and erratic.
“We need to get her inside to the infirmary. She’s unstable.” Rhonda said. I bent to pick her up, but Rhonda grabbed my arm. “You’ll shake her too much.”
