Rhett “Do you need a minute?” Jackson asked Pepper, his face full of concern. “No.” She wiped her eyes and sniffled. She lied. I thought about telling Jackson to give us a minute so Pepper could talk about it. The scent of her despair crushed me, and all I wanted was to protect her. If she said no, I must respect that. I huffed and scowled at Jackson. “Alright then. If you need to step out, you can.” Jackson turned his attention to Mitch, and I could feel Jackson’s anger come off him in waves. Mitch sunk deeper into his chair, and he appeared smaller than usual. “I’m going to give you a chance to explain why that child wasn’t being cared for.” Jackson said in a low grow; his green eyes had a glimmer of bronze. “We were under command! There was nothing I could do; I couldn’t break it.”
