Hannah’s eyes went wide, and the crowd silenced. If I wasn’t shocked by what Pepper said, I would’ve told the woman off. People stepped back, and I shifted my weight, ready to pounce. Hannah’s face broke into a grin, and she threw her head back in a fit of laughter. “You’ve got a lot of spunk! You’re going to need it.” Hannah wiped a tear from her eyes and had a hard time controlling her laughter. Pepper’s grip on my arm loosened, and a confused look crossed her face. “I know when my welcome is overstayed. It’ll be interested to work with you, neighbor.” Hannah whispered the last word and titled her head. She walked off into the crowd, and I kicked myself for not saying anything.
