Pregnant

I woke up to the sound of the shower, I looked beside me and realized that Paul wasn't there anymore. I stood up and walked to the dressing table. I looked at myself in the mirror and gasped. My left eye was purple and swollen, my face was rough, and I had bruises all over. I touched the cut on my lips and winced. "Good morning" Paul said as he walked out of the bathroom, a towel wrapped securely round his waist. I looked at him through the mirror, waiting for him to notice the bruises on my face but he paid no attention. I sighed and resigned to my fate, I should have gotten used to it by now but everytime it gets worse than the last. I tried to bend to take an ointment from the drawer but I had a sharp pain in my ribs. I cried out in pain. I held my side and sat on the bed, trying to stop the pain. Paul didn't seem to notice, instead he continued dressing. "My side hurts" I told him. "Drink water" he replied without looking at me "It's not about that, I think you damaged something last night." I said and immediately regretted it. He glared at me with the menacing look in his eyes. "You think I damaged something?" He glowered. "It was just a stupid thought. That's not possible, I'll go and drink water now" I said, ignoring the sharp pain in my side. It grew worse with every step I took. I went into the kitchen and fixed myself a sandwich. I ate it hungrily since I didn't last night. After I was done, I washed the plates. While I was doing that, Paul left, saying had a business meeting. I finished washing and I went to take my bath, I wanted to scrub my body of all his traces but my body was sore. Every movement hurt. My shower was cut short when the sharp pain in my side returned. I made up my mind to see a doctor. I got dressed and I went to the hospital closet. I was asked to wait for a few minutes and when the doctor was free, I was allowed in. "What happened to your face, ma'am?" The doctor asked, she was a female in her late forties. "I was robbed" I lied, ashamed to tell her the truth. "And have you complained to the police?" "Yes, they directed me here for treatments. They're working on the case." "Oh okay, we'll be doing some tests if that's okay by you." She said. I panicked, this was a bad idea. I hate hospitals so why did I come here. She noticed the fear on my face and she smiled. "There's nothing to be afraid of, it's not something scary. Just simple tests to know your wounds and how deep they are." She explained. "Okay" I swallowed "We don't have to start now, just tell me whenever you're ready. When did the incident happen?" "Last night" I replied truthfully, at least my whole response to her since isn't a complete lie. "Oh, then we have to carry out the test immediately. Stalling can be dangerous " she said with a sense of urgency. "Alright" I agreed. "Follow me please." She said, rising you from her seat. I stood up quickly and the sharp pain doubled. I screamed and held my side. I wanted to Walk but I couldn't, it was like the pain had made my leg stiff. I fell back into the chair and passed out. The next time I woke up, I was on a hospital bed and there was a drip attached to my hand. I tried to sit up but I couldn't. I resigned to my fate and laid back down. A nurse came in to check on me and realized I had woken up so she went to call the doctor. "Hello dear, how are you feeling now?" The doctor asked as she walked in. "Much worse, my head hurts." I said "I'm sorry about that, it will soon relieve you." She reassured. "Thank you" "We ran some tests on you, Miss Lisa." She addressed me by my name. I wondered where she got it from but then I remembered that I had written my name in the form I was giving when I first got to the hospital. "I've got good news and bad news, which do you want first?" she said. "Good news" I replied. "The good news is that you're pregnant, congratulations Miss Lisa." "What?" I asked in horror, all the color drained from my face. I couldn't believe my ears. Pregnant? I was on birth control pills. "You're pregnant miss" she repeated. "How?" "I take it that it's not good news for you." "It is not, it is bad news. Horrible news, nothing can be worse than this." I whined. "I still have something else to say, brace yourself please." "Go ahead" I urged. "You have a broken rib." "Excuse me?" "It was probably from the effect of a fall or something else. Are you sure you've reported this to the police?" She asked. "Yes, they're working on it." I insisted. "Okay " "Can I have my phone?" I asked, I needed to call Paul and let him know about the pregnancy. "Sure, it's beside you. On the table" I looked beside me and found my phone sitting on the table. I grabbed it and dialed Paul's number. It rang for a long time, but there was no response, I tried it multiple times, then I finally gave up. By the time I was done, the doctor had left. Probably to give me some privacy. I sighed and was about to drop the phone when it rang. It was Paul. "What is it? You called me five times. I'm busy. Haven't I told you not to call me during working hours again?" He asked over the phone. "I'm sorry, but this is an emergency " I said. "What is so important that it can not wait till I get home?" He questioned. "I'm in the hospital" I said. "So? Is that all?" He asked coldly. "It's pretty serious, I...." I was cut off by the sound of the beep. He had ended the phone call.
