Chapter2

Days passed inside Azure Ruin Valley. Refugees slowly began to rebuild. They cleared collapsed stone buildings, patched broken walls, planted small gardens in sheltered clearings. People who had known nothing but flight started to build something like home. Lin Yue explored the valley constantly. He tried to understand the strange silver‑grey mist that filled this land. The mist responded to his ash power. When he reached out, grey dust and pale silver fog intertwined. He could call upon fragments of the valley’s ancient strength. Yet every time he used it, faint strange voices echoed at the edge of his thoughts. Whispers belonging to someone long dead. Lira was among the refugees. Sharp‑minded, skilled with healing herbs and old scroll knowledge. She studied the crumbling carvings on ruined temple walls alongside Lin Yue. “These marks speak of an old sovereign who ruled this valley thousands of years ago,” Lira explained. “He wielded this very mist‑ash power. In the end, it destroyed him. The power ate his soul.” Lin Yue stored that warning deep in his mind. Still, the valley needed protection. Scouts kept watch on every mountain pass leading in. Word drifted back: sect forces were asking questions. They had heard rumours of a hidden refuge for outcasts. Troubles arrived sooner than expected. A small detachment of sect soldiers marched toward Azure Ruin’s outer approaches. They had come to investigate, to capture fugitives. They did not bring a full army, only a handful of disciplined cultivators. They expected easy arrests. Lin Yue met them at the valley border. He did not wish for bloodshed. He asked them to turn back. The sect officers laughed. They saw only a band of helpless runaways and one outlaw with strange dust magic. They moved to force their way inside. Ash exploded outward from Lin Yue. Rock fragments rose from the earth. A wall of hard compressed stone blocked their advance. The soldiers attacked, but their spiritual strikes were weakened by the valley’s mist. They could not break through. Beaten back, they retreated. They would carry word back to the high council. Azure Ruin Valley existed. And it would defend its people.
