Chapter 4 The Shirt Off His Back The first thing he had noticed was the horses. They were both mares, and neither had ever had their feet trimmed or shod. He had never needed to shoe a horse and wasn’t ready to learn how. He would trim them as soon as he could, he told himself. First things first. Looking around the room, he found a lariat. It was one of the things the white culture had brought that he had learned to like right away. It was stiff enough to retain the loop well when you threw it, yet strong enough to hold any horse he had ever worked. It was a little ragged out from years of wear but he could make it work.
