Cotton Bait
Daylight was creeping into the meadow when Talon came awake. The sun would not be up for a while but the Barred Rock rooster in the nearby coop was already at it. The brighter it got, the more he crowed.
Talon watched the mares through the little window in his room. It was full summer now and the days were warm. The grass in the meadow moved lightly in a breeze that seemed to come from nowhere and fade into the trees. There were a few mule deer on the far end of the meadow, three fat little does and a new fawn. They began lifting their heads and looking around as the day approached.
