UNRAVELING

Just like Samantha promised, they started seeing each other at his university. Secret meetings that led to them having a relationship. They are now boyfriend and girlfriend. But good things don’t last. Rojan was waiting for Samantha but it was Sabine who showed up. He tried to hide his shock at the sight of her. She was wearing a long sleeved blue dress with her usual thick glasses. There is no mirth in her eyes as she walks up to him. “Samantha says that she’ll stop seeing you from now on,” she stated nonchalantly. “And why is that?” “Because she realized how stupid it is to have anything to do with you. I’m sure you understand the gist of it.” Rojan smiled bitterly. “I know exactly what you mean Sabine. You think we don’t befit each other because your family are filthy rich and I am just a poor ordinary person. But do you really think I believe you?” He just wasn’t going to back down if that’s what they want. “I am sure you didn’t allow her to come seeing as it is you who’s here. Did she ever tell you we’re in love?” She looked at the point of her shoes and for a moment didn’t say anything. When she held up her head it showed her face bereft of any feeling. “No,” she answered sarcastically. “And I don’t think she’ll ever tell me that because you are just her plaything. Samantha treats men like her toys. Here today and tossed aside the next day. And you, Mister, are one of her toys. Yet here you are willing to be played.” “I don’t believe you, Sabine Brighton.” He teased her. “Up to you.” She sounded annoyed at him. “You must be really thick faced. I will have a word with your mother Leona. I’m very sure she doesn’t know about your relationship with Samantha. She should’ve taught you proper manners.” “I grew up without a father but I was raised by my mother properly. Maybe it’s you, Sabine, who wasn’t taught proper manners. Of course your parents told you that the rich and the poor can never be together.” Sabine felt her blood boil. “Leave from my sight you ungrateful human!” “No need to tell me to leave because I am. I can’t stand the sight of you. You are as ugly as your personality,” he icily retorted. Sabine was dumbfounded. Tears found its way to her in the corner of her eyes but she fought them off. Hearing him say she’s ugly made her feel the ugliest in the world. It hurt. But she will never let him see how hurt she was. If only Rojan knew the real reason why she objects to his relationship with Samantha. If only he knew how she felt. If only he understands her feelings towards him. A secret admiration that started from when she first saw him. She secretly looks his way every time he comes to pick his mother up from work. She dreams of him at night and try to feel how his embrace would be. She knew Samantha’s real intentions with Rojan. It makes her happy to play with men’s feelings. Because she knew how men react to her beauty. And she doesn’t want Rojan to end up hurt in the process. But she knows that whatever she does or say will never be enough to stop him from loving her sister. She willed herself to sound unaffected before speaking. “I have a message from my mother to you. She says that if you continue your relationship with Samantha, Leona will be out of work and she’ll make sure that no one will hire her either. If that is not enough to make you stop, we are willing to give you money. How much do you need to stay away from my sister?” A laugh escaped his throat. It was short but bitter. He stares at Sabine while she prepares a check before handing it to him. He looked at the amount written. It was too much. It was more than too much. “I believe this is more than enough to help you start a new life over with your mother.” She says a she hands him the check. Rojan held the check before tearing it into pieces in front of her. “You are selfish, Sabine. You will never be happy in life, mind you that. Because no one will ever love you!” She was about to slap his face when he held her hand tightly. His other hand slipped to the back of her neck then he pulled her for a kiss. It was a kiss full of hatred and he made sure she’ll never forget it. She was almost breathless. Her lips felt broken but she felt a tinge oh happiness in that kiss. No one ever dared to kiss her but him. And she’ll never forget this one. He left her dumbfounded. Tears were falling down her cheeks. When she can’t fight it anymore, she run. She run like she’s being chased. She felt humiliated. The memory of that kiss will forever be etched in her mind. Rojan thought Sabine is the person with the ugliest personality in the Brighton family. Everything continued between them and Samantha. They had secret rendezvous with every chance they get. Even when people kept talking about them it didn’t bother him. He didn’t let it get to him. He was happy. Until… “I am not happy anymore in this relationship,” he found Samantha sitting by a park bench while casually hitting on a cigarette. It was the first time he sees her with a cigarette. She looks like she hasn’t sleeped either. The smell of alcohol was evident. “I only came here to break up with you,” she added. “Have I done something wrong?” With a broken voice he asked. “Your mother always said you are smart. Quick witted even. Seems you aren’t that smart after all Rojan. Did you really think I was serious about us?” “What do you mean?” He asked in very soft voice. “Me? Being serious with the son of my mother’s secretary? How ambitious are you Rojan? I actually thought you are smart enough to know that I was just playing with you. And that you were just playing along. I never thought you were serious about us.” “But you agreed to be my girlfriend. You said yes.” “What of it? I never told you I love you. Wake up!” “You played me up,” it was a statement not a question. A realization not a theory. “So, now you know it. I think it’s time we end it.” “You’re just like your sister! You are all the same! I will make you regret ever fooling me Samantha!” Samantha kept walking. Her head held high seemingly not hearing anything.
