CHAPTER FIVE – THE CHAMBER OF SEALS
INT. UNDERGROUND TUNNEL – CONTINUOUS
The walls themselves seem to inhale faint light, veins of gold throbbing beneath the layers of primeval stone. There is a live feeling to the air, it vibrates a little at such low hum resonance, in time with Anna’s heart.
Startled, she laughs and takes the first step down into the spiral stairwell, her pendant spinning gold arcs over the carvings. Michael trails behind him, clutching a tiny flashlight that sputters with static. Elder Mara follows suit, her staff glowing with a pale blue light.
MICHAEL
It seems as though this place has been waiting.
ELDER MARA
It has. The covenant is prior to the language of man. Every Keeper who’s tread this path has left a memory there on its walls.
They walk by carvings of celestial beings pressing a dark gap in the sky together. Underneath, faint shapes move on the stone’s edges.
ANNA
Those symbols again. The snake, the sun, the spiral.
ELDER MARA
The three forces. Creation, it's shepherd and the attachment between them.
The humming grows louder. The final few steps lead into a huge room.
INT. THE ROOM OF THE SEALS — CONTINUOUS
The room is a large circular chamber, the ceiling obscured by darkness. The pillars around them are of obsidian, upon which are carved runes that keep moving. In the middle is a pool of hanging light, undulating as if made of liquid gold.
The instant Anna enters, her pendant glows.
MICHAEL
That light… it’s alive.
ELDER MARA
It remembers. It’s the core of what we call the first covenant — when light and dark agreed to share a world.
Anna inches closer as she’s pulled toward it. In the golden light her reflection flickers, shifts — slides from herself into her mother’s face.
ANNA
Mom…
Her voice whispers and reverberates, sending a tremor through the air.
Mara lowers her head.
ELDER MARA
She was the most recent Keeper to do so. It is from her blood that the Rift is sealed. Yours will need to complete what she started.
Michael walks around the periphery of the chamber, tracing his fingers along the etched symbols.
MICHAEL
There’s writing here. Old, but... Parts of it I can read.
(beat)
Written on it is the phrase “Balance must bleed to live again.”
ANNA
So to sign it, someone has got to die?
Mara’s silence answers for her.
CLOSE ON ANNA
Her face hardens.
ANNA
There has to be another way.
ELDER MARA
The covenant was sealed in blood. That’s what gives it power. The previous Keeper sacrificed herself to seal the Rift. Your mother did the same.
MICHAEL
Then it stops here. She’s not dying for some old promise.
ELDER MARA
You think I want that? The world outside is already unraveling. You’ve noticed the portents — the storms, the shadows, the silence after light. If the seal is ever broken entirely, there will be no world to save.
Anna’s pendant glows more intensely, casting a light across her face.
ANNA
Show me what my mother did. I need to see it.
FLASHBACK – INT. THE CHAMBER (YEARS AGO)
The chamber radiates the same gold luminescence - but its air burns with greater intensity. SARAH, younger and fierce, is where Anna now stands. The pendant at her neck is dwarfed by white fire. Behind her, the Rift is rent in two—black lightning shattering the walls.
DARK FIGURE is seen, enveloped in darkness.
DARK FIGURE
Give me the Seal, Sarah. I will keep the world safe.
SARAH
You mean enslaved.
She puts her hand on the ground. Blood flows into the carvings. The chamber blazes with light.
SARAH (CONT’D)
Let it remember me. Let it know my name.
The Rift closes, pulling her into its own brilliance.
BACK TO PRESENT
Anna gasps, dropping to her knees. Before she crumples to the ground, Michael catches her.
MICHAEL
Hey, hey—breathe.
ANNA
She gave it all and it still wasn’t enough.
ELDER MARA
That’s why you’re here. You are what she left behind — the living half of the Seal.
Anna gazes up at the pool of light.
ANNA
So how do I finish it?
Mara raises her staff. The markings on the chamber walls glow brightly.
ELDER MARA
By uniting blood and bond. The Keeper and the Guardian. The covenant requires both.
He glances down at the scar on his wrist—the serpent and sun sigil glowing pale red.
MICHAEL
So that’s what this is for.
ELDER MARA
Your father wore this before you. His line had sworn to protect hers.
MICHAEL
And he died doing it.
Anna reaches for his wrist. Her pendant beams into his mark. Gold and red spiral up around them, creating a ring.
ANNA
Then together we complete what they started.
THE CHAMBER REACTS
The air trembles. The floating light lowers until it hovers over the obsidian table. Runes on the ground burst into flame, creating a huge circle of fire and shadow.
There is a low rumbling through the walls.
ELDER MARA
It’s waking. Keep steady!
The light shoots out of him in strands, reaching out and linking to Anna and Michael. Their eyes gleam — hers gold, his crimson. They're inundated with visions — of oceans made of fire, angels descending from the sky... everything splitting open like glass.
MICHAEL
Anna! What’s happening?
ANNA
It’s… showing me everything!
The images converge: Sarah closing the Rift, Mara starring from a distance, the Shadow crawling through rents in reality.
Then—silence.
The chamber stills. The air grows colder.
A SHADOW GLOMS IN THE CORNER
A thin mist runs upward out of the darkness, black as ink, swirling and congealing until it takes shape as the DARK FIGURE. His eyes flare red, brighter than before.
DARK FIGURE
And here you are… my light, reborn.
Mara slams her staff down.
ELDER MARA
You’re trespassing on sacred ground!
DARK FIGURE
All ground is mine, old one. You once locked me in your fear. But fear drains away, and seals break.
He raises his hand. The light swinging overhead the table wanes. The runes begin to dim.
MICHAEL
He’s draining it!
ANNA
No. He’s drawing strength from it — my link to it.
Anna steps forward, pendant blazing.
ANNA (CONT’D)
You want it? Come take it.
The figure grins. His cloak opens into whips of shadow that thrash. Anna raises her hand, and light shoots out of it, smashing into the dark. The chamber shakes.
ELDER MARA
He’s too strong here! He’s feeding off the Rift!
MICHAEL
Then we cut him off. How?
ELDER MARA
His grip at the root—sever it in the Blood Circle.
Mara slams her staff into the ground. A ring of blue fire like liquid spreads out, pushing the shade back.
Anna Not a sound now but for Anna's shriek as her pendant glows white—not just white, white-hot. Michael holds her hand, their marks merging.
MICHAEL
You’re not alone, Anna! Hold on!
The light around them increases in their surrounding, causing the figure to falter.
DARK FIGURE
You can’t obliterate something you’re a part of! Bound by the covenant, we all are–light, dark, life and death.
Anna’s eyes burn gold.
ANNA
Then I’ll rewrite it.
She hits the black table with her palm. The pendant breaks apart, sunlight streams across the room. The floor insignia flare into a tornado of light.
The shadow howls as it is burned up into smoke.
DARK FIGURE (V.O.)
You only delay what’s eternal…
The chamber explodes with light.
INT. CHAMBER – LATER
Silence. The air is quiet, full of floating bits and embers of light. The pool over the table has disappeared. The runes no longer glow.
Anna spreads out on the floor. Michael crawls over to her and shakes her shoulder.
MICHAEL
Anna… hey, wake up. Come on.
She blinks open her luminous eyes, which briefly glimmer before dimming.
ANNA
Is he gone?
ELDER MARA
For now. You’ve damaged him, but the seal’s not done.
ANNA
What do you mean?
ELDER MARA
You’re with the blood and the bond. But the soul should still be moored. Without the third—
She stops, eyes widening.
ELDER MARA (CONT’D)
The third bit … and its shadow.
Michael looks around.
MICHAEL
There’s no one else here.
The chamber rumbles again. Cracks race across the floor. The golden coals are pulled downward, disappearing through a hole that opens at the middle of the apparatus.
A low vibrations runs through the floor.
ANNA
The Rift. It’s opening again.
ELDER MARA
Then we need to get to the heart — before he does.
Anna stands, shaky but resolute. She gazes down at the yawning vortex that is beginning to take shape beneath the chamber.
ANNA
Then let’s finish it.
She takes Michael’s hand. He squeezes it once.
MICHAEL
After this, you’re getting me a drink.
ANNA
Assuming the world is even still here.
Mara approaches them, her staff glowing even more.
ELDER MARA
The Chamber of Seals has awakened. The Rift calls for judgment. What’s down there … it’s waiting for you.”
They step to the precipice, the pull of the light sweeping them along.
ANNA (quietly)
Mom… guide me.
With a shout, they leap - vanishing into the golden spiral as the chamber crumbles down upon them.
FADE OUT.
