A Glimmer of Hope The air was thick with tension in Edward’s office as Clara sat across from him, eyes filled with worry. The days since their argument had been long, and the quiet in the house only seemed to grow heavier. Edward had never felt more confused. Clara had always been his rock, the person who stood by him when he had nothing. But now, everything seems different. “Edward,” Clara said, her voice soft and careful, “we need to talk.” Edward looked at her, his gaze distant. “About what?” “About us,” Clara replied, her eyes searching his face for any hint of warmth. “About what’s been happening.” He rubbed his eyes, feeling the weight of the world on his shoulders. “I don’t know where to start. Everything’s falling apart.” Clara reached out, her hand resting gently on his. “We’ll figure it out, Edward. We always do.” Edward glanced at her, his heart torn. “I want to believe that, but it feels like everything is slipping through my fingers.” There was a long silence between them. Clara’s words from the past echoed in Edward’s mind about how she had always believed in him, even when no one else did. He wanted to trust her, to believe that she hadn’t been hiding something from him. But the doubts lingered. “I need to know the truth,” he said, finally breaking the silence. “I need to know if you’ve been hiding something from me.” Clara’s face fell. She squeezed his hand, her voice barely above a whisper. “I haven’t been hiding anything, Edward. I love you. I would never do anything to hurt you.” Edward wanted to believe her, but he couldn’t ignore the nagging feeling in the back of his mind. “Then why did you create that account?” he asked, his voice tight. “Why were there transactions moving through Jason Holdings Limited with your name on them?” Clara’s face went pale. She pulled her hand away from his and stood up, pacing the room. “I… I didn’t want to tell you this. I didn’t want to make things worse, but…” She stopped, turning to face him. “I’ve been trying to protect you, Edward. Your father, he's been making moves behind your back.” Edward’s heart skipped a beat. “What do you mean?” “Your father has been taking money from the company,” Clara said, her voice trembling. “I found out about it months ago, but I didn’t know how to tell you. I didn’t want to make things worse. I hired Nathan to help me find out what he was doing. That’s why I created the account.” Edward stood up, shaking his head in disbelief. “You’re saying my father is stealing from me?” Clara nodded. “Yes. He’s been moving money out of the company, and he’s planning to make it look like you were the one responsible. That’s why I’ve been trying to protect you.” Edward didn’t know what to say. His mind was racing, trying to process what Clara had just told him. “But why didn’t you come to me sooner? Why didn’t you tell me what was going on?” Clara’s eyes filled with tears. “I was afraid, Edward. I didn’t want to lose you. I didn’t want you to think I was accusing your father. I just wanted to make sure we had enough proof before we confronted him.” Edward felt a surge of guilt wash over him. Clara had been trying to protect him, and yet he had been questioning her. But the doubt still lingered. “I need to think about this,” he said softly, stepping back. “I need to process everything.” Clara nodded, wiping her tears. “I understand. Just… Please believe me. I’m doing this because I love you.” Edward didn’t respond. He walked out of the office, his heart heavy with uncertainty. The following days were filled with questions and confusion. Edward couldn’t escape the feeling that something wasn’t right, but he didn’t know who to trust. He had always relied on Clara, but now, he wasn’t sure if he could trust his own instincts. He spent long hours in his office, sifting through company records and financial statements. The more he dug, the more questions he had. If Clara’s claims were true, then his father was guilty of betraying him, of sabotaging everything Edward had worked for. But why? Why would his own father do something like that? One evening, as he was reviewing more documents, Edward’s phone rang. It was Victoria. “Edward, I need to talk to you,” she said urgently. “About what?” Edward asked, feeling a sudden sense of dread. “About your father,” she replied. “I think I found something.” Edward’s heart pounded. “What is it?” “I’ve been going through some of the old company files,” Victoria explained. “And I found a contract. It’s dated years ago, right before the company went public. It’s between your father and a man named Nathan Ford.” Edward froze. “Nathan Ford? That’s the same man Clara hired.” Victoria’s voice was steady but filled with concern. “Exactly. I think your father has been involved with Nathan for a long time. He may have been planning this whole thing from the beginning.” Edward’s head was spinning. Everything Clara had said was starting to make sense, but it was hard to accept. His father, the man he had looked up to his entire life, might have been lying to him all along. “Are you sure about this?” Edward asked. “I’m sure,” Victoria said. “I’ve seen the contract myself. It’s clear that your father was working with Nathan long before any of this started.” Edward ran a hand through his hair. “This is too much, Victoria. I don’t know who to trust anymore.” “I know,” she said gently. “But you have to face the truth, Edward. You can’t keep ignoring it.” Edward sighed, feeling the weight of the world pressing down on him. “I don’t know if I can confront my father. He’s always been my hero.” Victoria’s voice softened. “Sometimes, the people we trust the most end up being the ones who hurt us the most. But you have to do what’s right.” Edward closed his eyes, taking a deep breath. “I’ll talk to him. I need to hear it from him.” The next day, Edward went to his father’s office, his heart pounding in his chest. This conversation was long overdue, but he didn’t know if he was ready to face the truth. When he walked into the office, his father looked up, a smile spreading across his face. “Edward, what’s going on? You look like you’ve seen a ghost.” Edward didn’t smile back. “We need to talk.” His father’s smile faltered. “About what?” “About everything,” Edward said, his voice cold. “About the money. About Nathan Ford. About what you’ve been doing behind my back.” His father’s expression changed instantly. “What are you talking about?” “I know about the contract,” Edward said, his voice steady despite the anger rising inside him. “I know about Nathan Ford. I know what you’ve been doing, and I want answers.” For a moment, there was silence between them. Then, his father’s face hardened. “You don’t understand, Edward.” “I understand more than you think,” Edward said, his voice shaking with emotion. “You’ve been lying to me. You’ve been betraying me.” His father stood up, his face turning red with anger. “You have no idea what you’re talking about. You don’t know the whole story.” “I don’t need to know the whole story,” Edward said, his voice growing stronger. “I just need you to admit the truth.” His father’s gaze faltered, and for a moment, Edward thought he saw regret in his eyes. But then, his father’s expression hardened again. “You’ll never understand. I did what I had to do for this family.” Edward shook his head. “No, you did what you had to do for yourself. You’ve been using me, using all of us.” The words hung in the air like a heavy weight, and for the first time, Edward realized the truth. His father wasn’t the man he thought he was.
