Chapter 3.

Johnny Owen, who had not said a word up until now, did. "What kind of ritual are we talking about?" With his gaze locked on Richard, he spoke in a hesitant tone. Johnny answered, and Richard never took his eyes off of his. "A ritual of blood oath. A covenant that unites our packs in a sense that goes beyond party affiliation. It would represent our resolve to stick together through all of life's obstacles." As the audience took in Richard's proposition, they fell into a quiet silence. A blood oath ritual was an important and antiquated custom that is not frequently observed these days. It represented an enduring relationship with dangers and benefits. Esther's look had changed from one of rage to thoughtfulness. She looked at her father, Alpha Owen, as though she was looking for advice. He gave a quiet nod, suggesting that they need to give the suggestion careful thought. The members of the Black Moon pack looked on expectantly as the Red Moon pack exchanged doubtful glances. They had a serious decision to make before them. When Alpha Owen did speak, it was to Richard directly. "Richard, this is a surprising offer. My council and I will confer on it and then get together to decide. You and your pack will be our honoured guests in the interim." Richard acknowledged with a lowered head. "Alpha Owen, thank you for your hospitality. We're waiting for your choice. Hope and trepidation mixed together in my gut as the Red Moon pack withdrew to their quarters to consult. Richard's suggestion had created a fresh opportunity that might alter the futures of our packs. However, there were risks and uncertainties involved as well, particularly for someone like myself who had been shunned and forgotten. Later that night, I heard bits and pieces of talks among the Red Moon pack members in the darkened halls of the packhouse. They debated the benefits and drawbacks of the blood oath ceremony and talked about its implications. One of them said, "I never thought I'd see the day when our packs would consider such a thing," with astonishment in his voice. Someone other spoke with a hint of doubt. What if, though, it's a trap? What if the pack known as Black Moon has hidden agendas? The doubt that pervaded the Red Moon pack echoed the ideas racing through my head. What was Richard really up to? Was this another arrangement something we could rely on, or was it a risk that would backfire? I went back to work like I was supposed to, bringing food and drinks trays to the Red Moon pack members who were billeted at the packhouse. Even though it was a simple assignment, I was still able to listen in on their chats and learn things. I heard Johnny and Richard having a quiet talk in one of the guest rooms. I could not resist listening in, my curiosity winning out. Johnny had a low voice, but it was full of sincerity. "I need to know, Richard. Is there more to this blood oath ceremony, or is it just a sincere promise of alliance?" Richard answered with the same sincerity. "Our Alpha truly has your best interests in mind, Johnny, I promise. We think that this alternate arrangement presents an opportunity for our packs to forge a closer, more sincere alliance. For both of us, it's a leap of faith." With a sigh, Johnny expressed how much responsibility was weighing on his shoulders. Richard, I want what's best for our packs. However, I also want Esther and myself to have a voice in our own fates. Will we have a duty or a choice if we proceed with this?" Richard gave a cautious response. It's going to be a decision, Johnny. Neither Esther nor you will be coerced into doing this. However, this decision has the potential to change both of our packs' futures." I felt conflicted after hearing their chat. Johnny had good reason to be concerned, and I felt bad for him. We were both, in a sense, constrained by customs and duties that didn't necessarily line up with our wishes, and we were both stuck by the expectations of our packs. The packhouse was left in a condition of calm expectation as the Red Moon pack members withdrew to their quarters as the night dragged on. The outcome of the blood oath ceremony was still up in the air, and our packs' futures were unclear. Alpha Owen called a meeting of his council the next day to address Richard's suggestion. Richard, Johnny, and Esther were also present, demonstrating the seriousness of the choice that had to be made. The council chamber was a dark, ominous space with elaborate carvings on the walls and wooden beams supporting the ceiling. I remained discreetly outside as the council members deliberated, their tones solemn and thoughtful. Esther finally spoke out during the meeting after remaining silent for the most of it. "I recognise the dangers associated with this blood oath ceremony, but I also see its possible advantages. It might strengthen a non-political coalition. It might strengthen the bonds between our packs." Johnny gave a nod of approval. "I agree with Esther's feelings. However, I want to ensure that this choice is not taken hastily. We require guarantees that our voices will be heard and that both packs will uphold the agreement." Alpha Owen looked at his intended and daughter with a mix of pride and worry. "Esther, Johnny, I'll see to it that your worries are taken care of. For our packs, this is a crucial time, and I want it to be a decision rather than a mandate." The council members proceeded to deliberate over the conditions of the blood oath ritual, delineating the obligations and accountabilities that it would involve. It was obvious that this choice would have wide-ranging effects, therefore every aspect needed to be properly thought through. The conversation went on for hours, and as time went on, I saw that my anxiety was increasing. Our packs' future would be decided by the result of this conference, and I couldn't help but worry what kind of impact it would have on someone like me—someone who had been abandoned and forgotten. When Alpha Owen finally announced a vote, the council members voted. As the votes were tallied, there was an obvious sense of tension in the room. With their futures on the line, Esther and Johnny anxiously observed. Richard was standing close by, a quiet witness to this crucial scene. One by one, the council members made their decisions known. Some supported the blood oath ceremony because they believed it would provide a chance for a more sincere and profound alliance. Others were cautious, fearing the dangers and unknowns it would bring. The last member of the council to cast a vote, Alpha Owen, inhaled deeply before disclosing his choice. He said, "I vote in favour of the blood oath ceremony," with unyielding resolve. With a look of relief on their faces, Esther and Johnny looked at one other. The council appeared to be in agreement with their desires. After making up her mind, Alpha Owen turned to face Richard. "We approve of your Alpha's suggestion, but we'll need some time to organise and set up the ceremony. It ought to be a serious and significant occasion for both of our packs." Richard gave a nod of approval. Naturally, Alpha Owen. We'll wait for your directions before working with you to arrange the specifics." Upon the conclusion of the meeting, I couldn't help but have cautious optimism. The choice to move forward with the blood oath ceremony signified a dramatic change in our packs' relationship patterns. It was an opportunity for a fresh start with the potential for a more sincere and constructive partnership. The weeks that followed saw the start of the ceremony's preparations. The Black Moon and Red Moon packs collaborated to prepare the occasion, and the packhouse was humming with activity. Witnessing members of two distinct packs work together in harmony, putting aside their differences for the sake of unity, was an odd sight. Even with all of their obligations, Esther and Johnny occasionally found comfort in each other's company. From a distance, I saw them together and saw how their relationship had changed from being a politically engineered union to a sincere bond. A testament to the possibility of anything lovely within the complexity of their environment, love appeared to be budding between them. I heard Esther and Johnny talking in the garden one evening as the sun was setting and the packhouse grounds were bathed in a lovely glow. They had come for a quiet moment, away from the eyes and demands of their packs. Esther's voice was low and genuine as she talked. "Johnny, I never thought I'd find happiness in this arranged marriage, but now, I can't imagine my life without you." With a smile, Johnny placed a delicate hand on hers. "Esther, our love is evidence that we can follow our own way even in a society where customs and obligations abound. I swear to support you through all the difficulties that lie ahead." Anticipation and anxiety were high as the blood oath ceremony day drew near. The packhouse had been turned into a sombre and respectful area. Every nook and cranny was embellished with elaborate decorations, and the corridors were alive with excitement. I saw the members of the Red Moon pack come, looking nervous and excited at the same time in their ceremonial clothes. Richard stood between them, a representation of the connection that was going to be made. Under the brilliant light of the full moon, a representation of harmony and direction, the ceremony was held. Richard and Alpha Owen stood together in the front, their hands clasped, reciting the holy pledge that would unite their packs. With a voice that carried over the assembled throng, Alpha Owen of the Red Moon pack and Alpha Richard of the Black Moon pack vowed to remain steadfast in their support of the unity of their packs. "May this blood oath ceremony solidify our bond, a bond that transcends politics and tradition." The two Alphas made a small incision on their palms, allowing a few droplets of blood to mix in a chalice, and the assembled audience observed in quiet. It was a potent and symbolic act that united their essence and served as a tangible mark of their devotion. Beside their fathers, Esther and Johnny exchanged their own vows, promising to be there for each other through thick and thin. "Will you take me as your husband?" Johnny enquired. "Yes!" was Esther's reply.
