The Pirate’s Nest was busy by the time we reached it close to sunset. Men were dealing in illegal goods, women were dressed in their undergarments, desperate to attract a suitor for the night with their necks littered in pearls and their lips stained red. That color reminded me of everything bad, the coat I was wearing, the blood that stained it, fire blazing over a town, the seduction of young men, drawn in like a mermaid would compel her human prey.
