I sat on the bottom step leading to the bow with the heels placed neatly beside my bare feet and the dress splayed out around me like a golden halo. I rested my chin on my crossed arms as the crew disappeared, one by one going below deck to rest for the day that would come, but I remained, unable to sleep, afraid to go below deck for fear of what Caleb would say. I eventually stood up, daring to go strip out of the uncomfortable dress that felt like a python constricting around my rib cage.
