Fresh Start
Ned led Tommy and Bert toward Wardour Street and nearly missed seeing George when Titch dragged him into an alley off Whitcomb Street, apparently to avoid being seen by another group of youths.
“There—that’s him!” Ned exclaimed. “I’m sure o’ it. ’E’s wi’ another boy. Looked like they were dodging those others over there.”
Bert frowned, trying to see what Ned was indicating, then caught a brief glimpse of a dirty elfin face at the entrance to the alley. “I think I sees a small yonker—if that’s what yer saw.” He watched the traffic for an opportunity to make a run for it. “Come on—them others seed ’im too.” Bert darted across the street dodging carts and wagons with Ned and Tommy close behind.
