CHAPTER EIGHT—THE FIRST ATTACK

For a moment, Elara couldn’t move. The words Kai had murmured were still hanging in the air, sharp and chilling, like the cold breath of a door left open in winter. Target acquired. Not protected. Not escorted. Not rescued. Acquired. Kai slipped the unmarked device back into his jacket as if nothing had happened. When he turned toward her, the shadows in the narrow hallway caught the angles of his face, and she couldn’t read a single thing in his expression. He lifted a hand, not touching her, just gesturing. “Inside. Now.” Elara stepped back on instinct. “Who were you talking to?” “Not here,” he said quietly. That answer wasn’t good enough, and he knew it, but his eyes flicked past her shoulder, listening for something she couldn’t hear. She didn’t know if he was being cautious or hiding something, and that uncertainty made her skin crawl. Another faint sound rolled through the house. A scraping. A floorboard shifting. Slow. Deliberate. Not Kai. Not Valentina. Not her. Her pulse leapt. Kai’s jaw tightened. “Move.” Before she could decide whether to trust him, a sharp c***k split the air, so sudden and violent it punched through the hallway like lightning. Gunfire. Elara flinched and stumbled back as splinters burst from the wall behind her. Kai didn’t hesitate. He grabbed her arm, not roughly, but with the precision of someone who had rehearsed danger all his life, and pulled her toward the metal room. A second gunshot blasted through the corridor. “Kai!” she gasped. He swung the door wide, practically lifting her across the threshold. The lights flickered overhead, and she caught a glimpse of something she never expected inside a mansion: reinforced steel, racks of equipment, a faint hum of electricity. This wasn’t a panic room. It was something far more serious. “Kai, what is happening?” Her breath came fast; her chest felt too tight. He didn’t answer. Not yet. He slapped a panel on the wall, and the metal door slammed shut behind them, sealing out the echo of shattering glass downstairs. Another shot. Then another. Then several, rapid-fire. Elara pressed her hands to her mouth. “They’re inside. They’re inside the house, Kai, who are they?!” “Not your concern,” he said, scanning the security monitors flickering to life across the far wall. “Not my concern? They’re shooting at me!” Kai finally looked at her, and for the first time since he appeared at the study door, something flickered in his expression. Not softness. Not fear. Something sharper. Recognition. “You weren’t supposed to be here tonight,” he said quietly. Her blood turned cold. “What does that mean?” But before he could answer, a dark figure appeared on one of the monitors, moving with purpose, armed, climbing the stairs that led to the very hallway they’d just escaped. Kai leaned forward, studying the screen with unnerving calm. “They’re faster than I expected.” Another shot thudded against the door, reverberating through the steel walls. Elara staggered from the vibration. “Kai, tell me the truth,” she pleaded. “Why are they here? Why me?” He didn’t look at her. He grabbed a headset from a drawer, flicked a switch, and made a quick adjustment to the microphone. “Because,” he said, his voice leveled once more, “the Moretti family made a lot of enemies.” “Damon,” she whispered. Kai didn’t confirm it. He didn’t need to. Footsteps thundered in the hallway outside the sealed room. Someone rattled the door, then struck it with the butt of a rifle. Boom. Boom. Kai didn’t flinch. “They can’t breach it. But we can’t stay long.” Elara pressed back against the wall, shaking. “What do you mean we can’t stay long? This room is… it’s armored. It’s safe.” “It’s safe,” he agreed, “but it’s a trap. And they’ll wait as long as they need to.” She stared at him. “So what do we do?” Kai adjusted the headset again. The device pressed tight against his dark hair, fitting him like it belonged there. “We move. Quietly. And only when I say.” She couldn’t think. She could barely breathe. The shots, the pounding at the door, the strange room, they all spun together until she grabbed the edge of a metal shelf to steady herself. “Kai… who are you really?” This time, he didn’t avoid the question. He reached into his pocket and pulled out the black device she’d seen earlier, the same one he’d used to whisper that chilling message. He turned slightly away from her. And with a voice so calm it made the hairs on her arms stand up, he spoke into it once more. “Target acquired,” he murmured. “Mission begins now.” Elara went still. This time, he didn’t bother to hide the words. Chapter 9—Who Is He? The metal door sealed behind them with a soft hiss, swallowing the sounds of the chaotic mansion. Kai didn’t say a word as he guided Elara deeper into the narrow passage. His steps were precise, almost too controlled, as though he’d practiced this route a hundred times. Elara kept close but stole glances at him whenever she dared. She replayed the scene she had just witnessed—his voice low, almost intimate, speaking into a hidden device. Target acquired. The mission begins now. She tried to convince herself she’d misheard. But the tension in Kai’s jaw, the deliberate way he’d shielded the screen from her… Something wasn’t right. He wasn’t just security. And he definitely wasn’t there by accident. When they reached a small, dim room, Kai stepped aside. “You’ll stay here for now,” he said, tone even. “It’s safer.” That was all. No explanation about the gunshots. No follow-up about the intruders. No reaction to the fear trembling in her hands. It was as though he expected her to obey simply because he had spoken. Elara nodded slowly, waiting until he walked a few steps away. “Kai… who were you talking to earlier?” His back stiffened. For a heartbeat, she thought he wouldn’t answer. Then— “Work,” he said without turning. “Don’t worry about it.” That was the moment her suspicion sharpened. Because Damon used that same tone every time he was hiding something. Kai walked toward the door again, pausing only long enough to add, “I’ll be right outside. Don’t leave the room.” The door clicked shut. Elara stood motionless for several seconds, listening to her own pulse pounding in her ears. She wasn’t a child. She wasn’t helpless. And she was done blindly trusting men who claimed to be protecting her. Her gaze swept the room. A metal desk. A cabinet. A wall of screens, currently dark. A chair tucked underneath the console. It looked like a small monitoring station—one Damon might reserve for someone he trusted deeply. Someone like Kai. Carefully, she approached the desk. Papers lay scattered in a neat grid, positioned in a way that suggested Kai liked order… but had moved quickly. She skimmed the top sheet. A list of Moretti personnel codes. Encrypted names. Operation tags. Her throat tightened. She pushed that aside. Then she found it. A slim, navy folder tucked partially underneath a monitor. Her fingers hesitated, then slid it out. “KAI VALEZ,” the label read. Her breath caught. She opened it. Inside, she saw a picture first—a younger Kai, wearing a military uniform, eyes just as unreadable as they were now. The documents beneath it listed training records, mission deployment logs, assignments she didn’t understand. Then, near the bottom, one line punched the air from her lungs. ASSIGNED TO: D. MORETTI PRIMARY OBJECTIVE: E. MORETTI — MONITOR & REPORT Her hand trembled so suddenly that the folder slipped from her grasp, landing open on the desk. She stared at the words, throat tightening around a bitter sting. Kai wasn’t protecting her. He was watching her. Reporting on her. Just like Damon. She felt foolish. Small. Exposed. Anger rose in her chest, sharp and hot. She leaned closer to the folder, flipping to the next page—maybe she had read it wrong, maybe— A shadow moved across the papers. Elara froze. Slowly, she lifted her head. Kai stood in the doorway. No sound. No warning. Just him—silent, still, unreadable. His gaze swept from her face… to the open file… to her hand gripping the edge of the folder. Something darkened in his eyes. “Elara.” Her name wasn’t sharp or angry. It was quiet, too quiet. That careful, controlled tone that told her she had stepped into a line she wasn’t meant to cross. Elara straightened, heart thundering. “You’re spying on me.” Kai took one step forward. “Put the file down.” She didn’t move. “Why are you reporting on me?” Her voice cracked despite her attempt at strength. “Who sent you? Damon?” Kai exhaled through his nose, a steadying breath—as if managing himself, not her. He reached for the folder. Elara stepped back, clutching it to her chest. His voice dropped low, almost a warning. “Elara… give me the file.” Her pulse hammered, and she realized something chilling: He wasn’t asking. He was deciding what to do next. And she had no idea who he truly was.
