Elara stood frozen, the photographs trembling in her hands. Every image felt like a punch to her ribs. She knew Damon was private, secretive, even, but this was different. This was an obsession. Control. A cage she hadn’t realized she’d been living inside.
Kai watched her carefully, his posture tense, as if waiting for something to break.
“Elara,” he said quietly, “you need to put those back.”
“No.” Her voice came out sharper than she expected. “No, I need answers.”
“We don’t have time.”
“I don’t care.” She shoved one of the photos toward him. “You knew he was tracking me like this? Recording me? Why?”
Kai’s jaw tightened, but he didn’t look away. “Because Damon trusts no one. Not even his wife.”
The words hit harder than the photos.
Elara stepped back, her shoulder brushing the cold steel wall. “This isn’t normal. This isn’t… marriage. This is surveillance.”
Kai exhaled, rubbing the back of his neck as though battling something inside himself. “You’re right. It isn’t normal. But you can’t keep opening things without knowing what you might trigger.”
He reached for the drawer to close it, but Elara pulled another open before he could stop her.
More files.
More folders.
Neat rows of information Damon kept hidden away from the world, and from her.
Kai swore under his breath. “Elara, stop.”
But she was already digging deeper, anger rising like heat in her chest. “You may be comfortable living in Damon’s shadows, but I’m done pretending none of this is strange.”
“Elara,”
She ignored him and yanked open a lower drawer. Inside lay a heavy black binder sealed with two metal clamps. A faint layer of dust coated the top, unlike the other drawers, which looked recently handled.
Elara frowned. “What’s this one?”
Kai moved toward her quickly. “Don’t touch that.”
Valentina narrowed her eyes. “Why? What’s inside?”
But Elara touched it, because if he told her not to, it meant he knew exactly what it was.
She pulled the binder free. It landed in her hands with a solid thud. The spine bore a simple inscription:
Project D-7
Elara slowly lifted her eyes to Kai. “What’s D-7?”
Kai’s gaze darted to the door, then back to her. “Put it back. Now.”
“No.”
“Elara,”
“No.”
She flipped it open.
A rush of cold swept through her as she scanned the first page, rows of dates, coded entries, locations around Lumine Bay. Some were redacted. Some stamped with clearance levels she didn’t recognize.
“What is this?” she whispered.
Kai looked like he wanted to take the binder from her grip by force, but he stayed rooted, almost as if touching it himself would be worse.
“It’s nothing you need to see,” he said softly.
“You keep saying that,” she shot back. “And yet here we are, in a hidden panic room with secret surveillance files of me and… whatever this is.”
She flipped another page.
More codes.
Medical references.
Behavioral reports.
Her name didn’t appear, but the hairs on the back of her neck rose. Something felt wrong, deeply wrong.
A small envelope slipped out from between the pages and fell onto her foot. Elara bent down, fingers trembling slightly as she picked it up.
The envelope was unmarked, sealed with a thin strip of black wax.
Kai stepped forward, voice low. “Elara, don’t open that.”
“Why not?”
His silence returned.
That silence had answers. She knew it now.
She tore the seal before she could lose her nerve.
Inside lay a single sheet of paper.
Just one.
No codes.
No diagrams.
No reports.
Only two words:
CLASSIFIED: ELARA MORETTI
Her breath caught. “Kai…”
He closed his eyes briefly, like he knew this moment was coming and had hoped he could delay it. He stepped closer, voice dropping into something gentler, almost regretful.
“Elara, listen to me.”
She stared at the paper, moth-drawn and terrified. “Why is my name on a classified document?”
Kai hesitated. “I can’t answer that.”
“You can’t or you won’t?”
He didn’t respond.
Her hands shook as she placed the paper on the desk. She flipped the binder again, searching frantically for explanations, anything that made sense. Something in the back caught her attention, a thin sleeve tucked into the final page.
She pulled it out.
A file.
A file with a bold, red label across the front.
ELARA: CLASSIFIED
Her stomach twisted as if the floor dropped beneath her. “Damon made a file on me?”
Kai’s expression was hardened, not cold, not emotionless. More like someone bracing for impact.
“Elara…” His voice came out almost too soft. “You weren’t supposed to see that.”
She pressed the file to her chest, staring at him with a mix of hurt and shock.
“Why?” she whispered. “What did he think I was? What did he think I’d do?”
Kai didn’t answer.
Instead, he reached for the file with slow, careful hands.
“Elara,” he said, “put it down. This one is dangerous.”
But she clutched it tighter.
“No,” she whispered. “Not until I know the truth.”
The lights flickered suddenly, once, then twice.
Kai’s head snapped toward the ceiling. “We’ve been found. Someone’s breaching the grid.”
Elara’s pulse spiked, but her fingers didn’t loosen on the classified file.
Because whatever danger waited outside,
The danger inside Damon’s secrets felt worse.
