Chapter 7: Project Phoenix

1190 Words
The rain fell steadily over London when Bianca Shane stepped out of the airport. Grey clouds stretched endlessly across the sky, casting a quiet gloom over the city. The air smelled different here, cooler, sharper and unfamiliar. Bianca tightened her coat slightly as she looked around. A sleek black car waited near the curb. The driver stepped out the moment he saw her. “Miss Shane?” Bianca nodded. “Yes.” “Mr. Grant sent me. Please, this way.” He took her suitcase and placed it in the trunk before opening the door for her and Bianca slid into the back seat. As the car pulled away from the airport, she watched the unfamiliar streets of London pass by the window. Everything felt distant from the life she had left behind. No memories, no heartbreak, no Carson, just a new beginning. The driver finally spoke again. “Mr. Grant is waiting for you.” Bianca frowned slightly. “At the office?” “No,” the driver replied. “At his residence.” Bianca raised an eyebrow but said nothing. The car continued through the quiet city streets before eventually turning into an upscale neighborhood lined with elegant townhouses. Moments later, it stopped in front of a large modern mansion. Bianca stepped out slowly and stared at the massive building which stood tall and imposing and its glass windows reflecting the rain. The door opened before she even reached it. Standing inside was Alexander Grant, tall, sharp and composed. His dark suit looked perfectly tailored, and his calm eyes studied her carefully. “Miss Shane.” Bianca met his gaze. “Mr. Grant.” For a moment, neither of them spoke then Alexander stepped aside. “Come in.” Inside, the mansion felt warm and quiet. A fireplace burned softly in the living room, casting golden light across the walls. Alexander gestured toward a seat. “You must be exhausted.” “I’m fine,” Bianca replied calmly. Alexander poured two glasses of wine and handed one to her. Bianca accepted it but didn’t drink. Alexander leaned back slightly, observing her more clearly this time. “You look different from the last time we met.” Bianca gave a faint smile. “That was five years ago.” “Yes.” “And yet I still remember the conversation clearly.” Bianca’s expression grew thoughtful. “So do I.” Five years earlier, at the university business conference, Alexander Grant had approached her after her presentation. He had offered her an opportunity, an opportunity she refused because back then, she believed her future was with Carson. Alexander spoke again. “You turned me down once.” “I did.” “And now you’re here…finally.” Bianca finally took a sip of the wine. “Yes.” Alexander’s eyes sharpened slightly. “Why did you really agree to leave everything and come here?” Bianca set the glass down carefully. “Because I have nothing left to lose.” Silence filled the room briefly as Alexander studied her expression. The sadness he saw in her eyes had been replaced by something stronger. Determination. “Good,” he said finally. Alexander stood up and walked toward a large desk nearby and he picked up a thick file. When he returned, he placed it on the table in front of her. Bianca looked down and the words printed across the cover caught her attention immediately. PROJECT PHOENIX Bianca frowned slightly, “What is this?” Alexander sat down again. “It’s your future.” She opened the file slowly. Inside were documents, financial reports, business strategies and something else. A company name was written boldly on one of the pages. Phoenix Global Holdings. Bianca looked up, “You’re giving me a company?” Alexander shook his head. “No.” He leaned forward slightly. “I’m giving you the opportunity to build one.” Bianca’s eyes flickered with surprise while Alexander continued calmly. “Just like we discussed, for the next five years, you will work under me.” “You’ll learn everything about international markets, corporate acquisitions, and global strategy.” Bianca flipped through the pages and the scale of the project was enormous. “This kind of operation requires billions.” Alexander smiled faintly. “Yes.” “Which is why I’m funding it.” Bianca looked at him carefully. “And what do you get in return?” Alexander didn’t hesitate. “Results.” His voice was calm but firm. “I don’t invest in people who fail.” Bianca closed the file slowly. “And you’re confident I won’t?” Alexander held her gaze. “I wouldn’t have waited five years if I wasn’t.” Those words lingered in the air. Bianca leaned back slightly. “And if I succeed?” Alexander’s expression remained unreadable. “Then five years from now, you won’t just be another business executive.” He paused and stared at her a little intently, “You’ll be one of the most powerful CEOs in the global market.” Bianca’s heart beat a little faster. Power, influence, control, everything she once lacked. Alexander studied her carefully. “Your life until now has been defined by someone else’s choices.” Bianca knew exactly who he meant. Carson. Alexander’s voice lowered slightly, “But what you do next, will define who you truly are.” Bianca’s fingers rested on the file. For the first time since leaving the city, something inside her shifted. Hope, not the fragile hope she once had with Carson but something stronger and something dangerous. Alexander spoke again. “There’s only one condition.” Bianca looked up. “What is it?” His gaze was steady. “Once you start this….you don’t quit.” Bianca didn’t hesitate. “I won’t.” Alexander smiled faintly. “I expected that answer.” He stood up and extended his hand. “Welcome to Project Phoenix, Bianca.” Bianca looked at his hand briefly before shaking it, and just like that, the deal was sealed. Five years to become someone no one could ignore, someone no one could discard, someone powerful. Thousands of miles away, Carson Dane stood alone in Bianca’s old apartment. The place felt eerily empty. Most of her belongings were gone but something on the table caught his attention, a small notebook. Carson picked it up slowly. Inside were pages filled with handwritten notes. Business ideas, marketing strategies, corporate expansion plans. Carson’s expression slowly changed as he read. These weren’t random thoughts, they were brilliant. His heart sank slightly. Many of the ideas written there were strategies Dane Enterprises had used over the past few years. Carson’s voice was barely a whisper. “Bianca.” A sudden realization hit him like a wave. All this time, how much of his success had actually been hers? Carson closed the notebook slowly. For the first time since she left, a deep, unsettling regret began to grow inside him but what he didn’t know was that the woman he abandoned was already beginning a journey that would one day place her far beyond his reach.
