The taxi stopped in front of a quiet office building on the edge of the city. Bianca looked out the window, confused. This wasn’t the kind of place she expected a powerful businessman like Alexander Grant to work from. The building was simple, five floors of glass and steel, with a modest sign near the entrance that read Grant Consulting Group.
The driver cleared his throat. “Miss, we’re here.” Bianca nodded and paid the fare before stepping out.
The night air felt cool against her skin. For a moment, she stood there staring at the building, her phone still in her hand. The email from Alexander Grant was still open on the screen.
If you’re ready to leave that life behind, come see me.
Her life had already fallen apart tonight, what else did she have to lose? Bianca straightened her shoulders and walked inside.
The lobby was quiet and softly lit. A receptionist sat behind a sleek desk, typing on a computer. When she saw Bianca enter, she looked up with a polite smile.
“Good evening, how may I help you?”
“I’m here to see Alexander Grant,” Bianca said. The woman studied her for a moment.
“Are you Bianca Shane?”
Bianca blinked in surprise. “Yes.”
The receptionist immediately stood.
“Mr. Grant has been expecting you. Please take the elevator at the end of the hall, it will take you directly to his office.”
Bianca thanked her and walked toward the elevator, her mind spinning with questions. The doors slid open and she stepped inside. As the elevator rose, Bianca caught her reflection in the mirrored wall. Her eyes looked tired, her makeup was slightly smudged from earlier, and her expression still carried the weight of everything that had happened tonight.
Carson’s words echoed painfully in her mind.
“Victoria and I are going to be engaged.”
When the elevator finally stopped, she stepped out.
The top floor was quiet and spacious. Floor to ceiling windows revealed the glowing skyline of the city. Lights stretched endlessly across the darkness. Standing near the window was a tall man in a dark suit. That was Alexander Grant. He turned slowly as Bianca approached.
His sharp gray eyes studied her calmly.
“You came,” he said.
Bianca crossed her arms slightly. “You asked me to.”
Alexander gestured toward a chair in front of his desk. “Sit.”
Bianca hesitated before taking the seat. For a moment, neither of them spoke. Alexander observed her carefully, almost like he was studying a business report.
“Tonight was difficult for you,” he said finally.
Bianca stiffened.
“You seem very well informed.”
“The business world moves quickly,” he replied calmly.
His gaze sharpened slightly.
“Tell me Bianca, how does it feel to give five years of your life to someone who chooses wealth over you?” The bluntness of the question hit harder than she expected.
Bianca stood abruptly. “If you invited me here to insult me, then I’m leaving.”
“I invited you here to change your future,” Alexander said. His calm tone made her pause. Slowly, Bianca sat down again. Alexander opened a drawer and slid a thin folder across the desk.
“What is this?” she asked.
“Opportunity.”
Bianca frowned but opened the folder. Inside were pages of financial reports, investment strategies, and business expansion plans.
Her eyes widened as she read.
“These numbers” she murmured.
Alexander nodded.
“It’s the blueprint for a new corporation.”
Bianca flipped through the pages quickly. International markets, global investment funds, acquisition targets. The scale of it was enormous.
“This company would be worth billions,” she said.
“That’s the plan.” She looked up at him.
“And why are you showing this to me?”
Alexander leaned back in his chair “Because I want you to run it.”
Bianca stared at him.
“You can’t be serious.”
“I never joke about business.”
“Why me?” she asked. Alexander studied her for a moment before answering.
“Six years ago, you attended a business conference at WestHigh University.”
Bianca blinked in surprise.
“I remember.”
“You challenged my entire lecture on corporate expansion,” he continued. “You were the only person in the room brave enough to question me.” Bianca remembered that day clearly. After the conference, Alexander Grant had approached her personally and offered her an internship but she had declined.
At the time, she had been helping Carson build Dane Enterprises.
“You offered me a job once,” Bianca said quietly.
“And you rejected it,” Alexander replied.
“Yes.”
He nodded slightly.
“I respected that decision, loyalty is rare.”His expression hardened just a little.
“But loyalty is meaningless when it’s given to the wrong person.” Carson’s face flashed through Bianca’s mind.
Alexander leaned forward.
“This time, the offer is different.” Bianca’s grip tightened slightly on the folder.
“What exactly are you offering me?”
“A partnership.”
She frowned.
“I don’t have billions of dollars.”
“You don’t need them.” Silence filled the room.
Alexander stood and walked toward the window overlooking the city.
“Right now,” he said quietly, “you’re standing at the lowest point of your life.”
Bianca didn’t respond.
“Your heart is broken,” he continued. “Your future feels uncertain, everything you built with Carson Dane is gone.”
He turned back to face her.
“But moments like this create powerful people.”
Bianca’s heart pounded slightly. “What do you mean?”
“I mean,” Alexander said, “pain is a powerful motivator.”
He gestured toward the folder in her hands.
“With my resources and your intelligence, we can build something extraordinary.”
Bianca’s mind raced.
“And what would I have to do?”
“Leave this city.”
“For how long?”
“Five years.”
Her breath caught slightly.
“Five years?”
“You’ll train, expand the company, and build international influence,” Alexander explained. “By the time you return, you won’t just be successful.”
His eyes sharpened.
“You’ll be untouchable.”
Bianca looked down at the documents again. Five years, five years to rebuild herself. Five ears to become someone no one could ever underestimate again. The woman Carson abandoned tonight suddenly felt very far away.
Bianca closed the folder slowly then she met Alexander Grant’s gaze.
“I’ll do it,” she said.
Alexander smiled.
“Good.” But before another word could be spoken, Bianca’s phone suddenly rang.
The sound cut sharply through the quiet office. She glanced down at the screen and her body went completely still.
It was Carson Dane, though his number has been deleted from her phone but not from her heart.
Alexander raised an eyebrow.
“Well,” he said calmly.
“Are you going to answer it?”
The phone continued ringing in Bianca’s hand and for the first time that night, she wasn’t sure what her next move would be.
