Chapter 2 - Answaers given

3025 Words
A couple of days passed and Melody’s injuries healed slowly. Kaila had taken good care of her as she had promised her mate Nikan. Kaila pushes the wheelchair with Melody sitting on it out of the front door of the healer's house. Melody closed her eyes as she felt the sunlight hitting her skin for the first time in days. The warmth made her smile as she smelled the wet forest around her. It had been raining all night. Kaila pushes the wheelchair, showing Melody around in the little town. It wasn’t too cold. Melody had borrowed some of Kaila’s clothes. A long dress and a warm jacket. She can’t wear pants yet because of her injured feet. Her feet were covered by a blanket. “As you can see, we build our houses ourselves. We have a lot of newcomers. It’s hard to keep up with housing them all,” Kaila said as Melody opened her eyes and looked at a group of men working on the houses up ahead. “Legally, we are an actually a town. We call it Thang. 262 wolf-bloods live here. Only 7 of them were born here. My daughter Emma is one of them,” Melody cut her off as Kaila explained. “Wolf-bloods? I don’t know much about werewolves. I’m sorry,” Melody said apologetically as she looked around. It looked much like a normal little hunters community. They had a bar, a grocery store and a little school too. All of the buildings were made of wood logs, and the roads of dirt and stone. “Well, I’ll explain then,” Kaila said gently with a smile as she parked Melody in the wheelchair next to a bench on the sidewalk. Melody looked at Kaila curiously as she waited for her to explain. Kaila sat down on the bench and started. “First of all, we don’t like being called werewolves. That’s a name the witches gave us back in the day when they turned the first man into a wolf. The history of the wolves is long. The first wolf was turned by a native northern witch, called Tala, in the year 889. To save her beloved husband, who was born with a deadly disease, she decided to turn to magic for help after the gods failed her. Wolves were seen as strong and godlike creatures at the time. With a powerful spell, she bonded her husband with a wolf. She killed the wolf and let her husband bathe in the blood, feeding him the heart of the mighty beast of the night. He lived and for a time they were happy,” Kaila paused, looking at Melody who was listening carefully to every word she said. “What happened then?,” Melody asked curiously. Kaila smiled before continuing. “Wolves mate for life. They imprint on their partner. They only have one partner in their lives. Tala wasn’t meant for Calian, the first wolf. He imprinted on a girl from the same tribe. Tala was furious and cursed the two of them. Calian would have to turn into a wolf every full moon, breaking every bone in his body every time of the turn. Before this, he didn’t have a wolf form. She cursed him to die if he was denied his mate. Tala cursed the girl to leave the tribe and to die if she ever touched Calian again. The girl whose name was lost to history left and never came back. Calian looked for her but never found her. He slowly died from heartbreak. But the story doesn’t end here. The girl gave birth to his son and he was the first real turner,” Melody looked at Kaila confused. Kaila noticed. “A turner wolf or shapeshifter wolf is a human with wolf blood that turns into a wolf. The first many generations of wolves, after Calian, had to turn every full moon. It’s not like that anymore. Evolution gave us better control and now wolves learn to turn as they wish. Of course, young turners have to learn to control it first. Wolves typically find out if they are turners around the age of 13. The first year or so, they are forced to turn every full moon, until they learn how not to. I’m not a turner. I still have wolf blood but I don’t grow fur and walk on all fours. A human with wolf blood heals faster and has better eyes and smell than an average human. The shapeshifter wolves are ten times stronger and have even better senses than the rest of us,” Kaila explained as Melody nodded understanding. “Nikan is a shapeshifter, right?,” Melody asked. Kaila nodded. “He imprinted on you,” Melody added. Kaila giggled. “And I on him. We are mates for life,” she said with a big smile. Melody smiled too. “It’s really romantic,” she said as she smiled brightly at Kaila. “I was lucky. As a wolf, you have no power over the one you imprint on. Nikan and I are almost the same age and we like the same things too. Some wolves aren’t as lucky. The most unlucky imprint on a human,” Kaila joked. Melody tilted her head confused. “What’s wrong with that?,” she asked, confused. “As I said, wolves mate for life. Humans don’t have the same kind of loyalty. Besides, when a wolf imprints, their whole world becomes about their partner. If apart for too long, the wolf starts to get sick and heals slower. Explaining to a human that you’ll die if they break up with you is not a fun conversation,” Kaila explained. Melody nodded. It sounded horrible. “Plus. Wolves are very physical beings. They crave their partner on a whole other level. I guess you could say we have a very high s*x drive,” Melody blushed hearing Kaila’s words. She didn’t know what to say. She was still a virgin and had never been touched before. Melody laughed awkwardly and changed the subject. “What about Enzho? Is he a shapeshifter?,” she asked. She hadn’t seen him since the day she was brought here. “Enzho? Of course he is. He is our alpha,” Kaila said, as if it was obvious. Melody looked confused. “Alpha? What does an alpha do?,” she asked, confused. “Think of him as our sort of king. He is the head of our pack. He protects us from outside danger and keeps order on the inside. The special thing about Enzho is that he is a true alpha. He is legendary in all of the north. The first true alpha to be born in over 500 years. A true alpha is born an alpha. Normally, the position of the alpha is passed on when the previous alpha dies. Nikan’s father was the alpha before Enzho. Nikan was supposed to have been alpha after his father, but then Enzho and I showed up,” Kaila paused. She needed a minute before continuing. Melody saw the change in her eyes. “Enzho is my older brother. We came here after our own pack was wiped out by hunters from the northern mountains. I don’t remember much. I was only 10 at the time. Enzho was 13, just like Nikan at the time. When we arrived here, Enzho was quickly announced as the successor to Nikan’s father. Nikan wasn’t happy about it, but as the years passed he understood why. A true alpha has special powers. Not only are they the only ones with red wolf eyes, but they have the power of the alpha voice too. The alpha voice can command any wolf no matter what. If Enzho uses it, we don’t have a choice. What he says is the law. We physically can’t deny him,” Kaila paused as she saw Melody’s terrified expression. “It sounds worse than it is. My brother isn’t as bad as you think. Enzho comes off as this big and scary guy, but he is sweet on the inside. He takes good care of us all. Hearing of his greatness, nearby packs join us. He loves his family very much, especially my daughter Emma. He is the best oncle to her.” Kaila explained with a sweet smile. Melody wasn’t convinced. She remembered way too well how the voices of the spirits had warned her. “Well. Enough questions for today.” Kaila said before standing up and rolling Melody back to the healer's house. Melody was sitting on her bed looking out of the window. The door behind her went up and she turned to look who it was. Her eyes widened as she saw Enzho. Her heart started beating fast in her chest. He was intimidating. Tall as the door frame, broad shouldered and fit like a superhero. She looked at his face. Nicely trimmed beard, short cut hair on the side and longer on the top. He styled his dark brown hair nicely. He was wearing jeans and a long sleeved black shirt. He was handsome, no doubt about that. She looked away as soon as he looked at her. He moved to the side and let Grandma June walk into the room. “Hello dear, mind if we come in?,” Grandma June asked politely. “No, of course n-not,” Melody stuttered nervously. Enzho closed the door behind them and they both walked to Melody. Enzho took a chair and placed it next to the bed where Melody was sitting, for Grandma June to sit on. Melody just looked at the floor the whole time. She was afraid the voices would start talking if she looked at Enzho for too long. “Dear, I hope you’re feeling better,” Grandma June said as she looked at Melody. She noticed how Melody was looking nervously at the floor. She looked back at Enzho and gestured for him to say something. He sighed and rolled his eyes. “I’m sorry if I startled you the last time we met.” he said calmly. She didn’t look at him. “I know who you are,” she said, and he looked at her confused. He didn’t like the way she said it. Like she knew something. Like she disliked him, maybe even hated him a little. “Sweetheart, I know you might not want us to start asking questions, but understand we are taking a risk letting you stay here,” Grandma June said with a sweet smile. Melody looked up at her. She knew she would have to talk at some point. They had been so kind to her and never asked anything in return. “What do you want to know?,” Melody asked, taking a deep breath. “What happened to you?,” Enzho asked coldly as he leaned on the wall next to the window. She swallowed the lump in her throat. “I’ve been moving around my entire life. First from foster home, to foster home and then again on my own after turning 18. I can’t stay in the same place for too long. People freak out when they see what I can do,” Enzho cut her off. “How old are you?,” he asked. He thought she was only around 18. “25,” she answered. He looked at her surprised. “You’ve been on your own all this time?,” he asked with a confused expression. “Yes, as I said, people don’t like what I can do. Just like you guys, people think I’m a witch. This time the villagers decided to treat me like one too,” she paused, remembering how she was chased out of her bed in the middle of the night. Flashes of her running through the woods haunted her mind. “They decided to witch-hunt me. They would have burned me at the stake if I hadn’t gotten away. They chased me out of my bed in the middle of the night. Hunting me with rifles through the woods. I didn’t have a choice. I had to flee. In the end, I couldn’t run any more and I jumped in the river,” she finished, and looked at the floor again as water built up in her eyes. She didn't belong anywhere and never had. She was tired of hiding and running. It felt like she had nowhere to go. Nowhere felt like home. Home was never a feeling she had felt before. A tear ran down her cheek. Melody quickly brushed it away, hoping the others didn't notice, but they did. Grandma June looked back at Enzho with a worried expression. “Let her stay, Enzho,” she begged him as she stood up and hugged Melody, patting her back gently. "Just for a couple of more days. As soon as my feet are healed I'll leave, I promise," Melody said, begging him as well. It was her only chance. She wouldn't make it far in the injured stay she was in. She needed just a little more time. Enzho sighed. “Fine, but the first sign of trouble and she leaves,” he said coldly and walked out. Enzho didn’t trust her, but he did feel sorry for her. Melody looked up at Grandma June surprised. She didn't expect Enzho to give in and agree like that. “You can stay as long as you want,” Grandma June said with a big welcoming smile. Melody smiled back through her teary eyes. She was relieved. A week went by and Melody was a lot better. She could finally stand on her feet. It still hurt a lot but it was manageable. She stepped out of her bed and put on some loose fitted sneakers and a jacket. She was wearing denim jeans and a white t-shirt. Kaila had cleaned out her closet and given her old clothes to Melody. She didn’t have any herself, having arrived in only a nightgown. Melody was grateful for all the help Kaila and Grandma June had provided her. She decided she would go for a short walk today. She grabbed her sketchbook and a pen. Grandma June had given her the sketchbook as a welcome gift. Melody loved to draw and paint. She walked slowly out of the healer’s house and started walking down towards the great hall. She walked slowly and had to take breaks. But in time she reached the great hall. Behind it was a big hill that she had seen every time she and Kaila had been out together for walks. She decided she wanted to see the little town from up there. She started walking up the hill. Out of the great hall walked Enzho and his nose caught her scent. He hadn’t gotten used to her and her scent yet. He looked around and spotted her walking slowly up the hill. He shook his head as he watched her struggle to keep her balance on her feet. She tripped and he automatically moved, walking up the hill towards her. Something in him was pulling him to her. He sighed, annoyed, wondering why he wasn’t just walking away. She got up and he heard her laughing. He paused and watched. She brushed off her clothes and smiled to herself. His gaze softened as he looked at her, smiling so carefree. He stood there only around 10 feet from her and couldn’t take his eyes off her. Every time she was around his eyes were automatically drawn to her. It was annoying. That was why he would avoid here. He didn’t like feeling drawn to her. She was still not welcome in his mind. She looked back and saw him. Their eyes met for the first time and his world stopped. “I’m okay. I just tripped,” she giggled, thinking he was here to make sure she was alright. She knew Grandma June had told him to be nice to her. He didn’t respond as he almost stopped breathing and his chest started moving with his fastened heartbeat. He looked at her with big eyes as he blocked everything around him out. “Hey! Are you okay?,” she asked as he stood there frozen. It made her a little uncomfortable how he was staring at her. He could feel his eyes starting to glow red and he finally looked away before he quickly walked down the hill to his house next to the great hall. He slammed the door behind him, leaving her confused on the hill above. He locked the door behind him and blinked his eyes aggressively, trying to turn off his red wolf eyes. His skin burned and he pulled his shirt off. He leaned on a chair feeling dizzy. He couldn’t control his own strength and the chair broke in his hand. He started sweating as his body heated up even more. He walked to the sink and splashed water on his face trying to cool down. But it didn’t work. He walked to the fridge and opened the door harshly. He ripped the fridge door off the rest of the fridge and stood with it in his hand. He looked at it confused and let it fall to the floor. He couldn’t focus on it right now and grabbed a water bottle and opened it, splashing it in his face as he let the ice-cold water run down his bare upper body. It wasn’t enough and he unsteadily walked down the hall to his bathroom. He almost slipped into the bathroom and fell to the floor as he desperately opened for the cold water. He closed his eyes and growled out. He could feel the cold water turn into steam on his burning bare skin. He knew what had just happened and he couldn’t believe it. He slowly calmed down as he sat under the cold running water. He sighed hopelessly. He had just imprinted on her. A non wolf-blood. A banshee. This couldn't get any worse.
