His mother had been politely rude the whole evening but had stuck around for dinner and Kristen had managed her quite well. She definitely could have been a society lady with the way she had neatly played his mother, putting everything she said back on her to make any response rude on her part.
She was always rude, but it was done in such a way that it wasn’t openly visible. Backhanded compliments were her favorite thing. Kristen had taken them all with a smile and thanked her with a polite remark of her own.
He couldn’t lie: he had been very impressed. After his mother had left, he had told her how well she had done. Kristen had simply laughed and let him know it had been pretty easy for her, if not comical at times.
