Having finally reached the master bedroom, Alexa quickly headed towards the walk-in robe where the back room was wisely hidden away from view.
She recalled how Dante had once shown her how to get inside and how to lock it behind her.
Though in truth, she had always hoped to never have to use it in real life.
Pushing her way through the pristine designer clothing hanging down from their suspended racks above her, Alexa finally located the handle of the safe room in the darkness surrounding her and turned it until she heard a soft ‘click’ sound.
Yes!
It was open.
Pushing the weighted door further open with a grunt, Alexa took one last look in the direction of the bedroom door before she then stepped inside.
Reaching her hand along the interior wall of the saferoom whilst in total darkness, she began her desperate search for the singular light switch.
Eventually, her slender fingers made contact with it and she immediately flicked it on to reveal the small, yet comfortably furnished room waiting for her inside.
Turning herself back around she slowly pulled the door closed behind her, making sure to close it properly until it made another loud ‘click’ sound.
Pressing the large red button on the control panel labelled ‘arm’, the door immediately armed and locked itself electronically.
“Thank God...” she said softly to herself, closing her eyes and letting out a relaxed sigh.
But it was only then that she noticed something… something alarming.
Her phone.
She left her phone back in the kitchen!
“No, no, no, no... s**t!”
Gasping at her sudden realisation Alexa began to panic once more, scanning the room with her eyes to try and find a way to communicate with Dante.
She needed to let him know that she was alright. That she was safe and inside the safe room.
Noticing several monitors lining one of the nearby walls, she moved across to stand in front of them.
Within moments she had located the power button and switched on the security surveillance system that this safe room apparently had.
Each screen showed a different room in the apartment and as she scanned the monitors one by one, her eyes finally landed on one with movement.
The monitor was labelled ‘Lounge Area 2’ and she recoignised it as the place where she had last seen Max before running upstairs.
Forced to merely stand by and watch what was happening downstairs right now, Alexa breathed heavily as panic began to eat away at her.
All she could see right now were complete strangers lurking about freely from one room to the next.
Each appeared to be heavily armed with automatic weapons as they carefully scanned the apartment in search of her.
But unfortunately, Alexa couldn’t seem to find any sign of Max whatsoever on any of the screens. Her heart sank with dread as several thoughts entered her mind all at once…
Was he dead?
Had she left him there to die?
As a powerful wave of guilt began washing over her, Alexa felt like a complete coward for running away like she did.
Yes, she was heavily pregnant and needed to keep her child safe from anyone who might do them harm, but she couldn’t help how she now felt for abandoning someone who needed her help.
And worst of all, this was all her fault in the first place!
All because she was foolish enough to trust Nicholas or whoever the hell the lying bastard was…
Noticing movement on the monitor labelled ‘Master Bedroom’, she realised just how close they were now to possibly locating her.
Yes, Alexa was hidden away in a bullet-proof and even explosion-resistant room, but she still felt terrified of being found by these men none the less.
“Come on Dante…” she whimpered to herself as she cowered on the singular chair located beside the monitors.
“Where are you?”

By now the Reaper was only a about a single block away from the apartment and due to the heavy traffic in that area at the time, the streets were heavily populated with cars and people.
It appeared that it was far too busy for them to make it to the apartment in their vehicle.
They would have to go the remainder of the way on foot.
“f**k it!” Dante cursed, opening his driver’s side door and sprinting off into the direction of the apartment block.
“Merda!” (s**t!)
Nicola whispered to himself, quickly unbuckling his seat belt and getting out of the vehicle with the intention of following his clearly impatient Don.
Before he did, he turned to face both Luca and Cecilio for a moment as they too got out of the car.
“You two check the back entrance.” the underboss commanded.
“Clear the area and take out anyone you find. GO! GO!”
“Yes boss!” the two called out as they headed off to complete their tasks.
Nicola was then left to follow along after his Capo and hope that Dante wouldn’t get himself into too much trouble in the meantime.

Having searched the entire apartment and still coming up with no sign of Alexa, there was only the master bedroom left to be searched.
It appeared that they were finally closing in on her.
The six remaining intruders began to focus their efforts on that room in particular, with four of them having entered the room to continue their search, and the other two men now standing watch for their quick escape.
As the armed men ransacked the luxurious room one inch at a time, the men spoke to one another in frustration.
“This is the last room. The only room we haven’t searched thoroughly. She has to be in here somewhere!” the tallest of them announced as the others continued searching.
“Hey Boris, are you certain she was even in the apartment when we arrived?” a shorter man with a goatee glanced across at the taller man from where he stood by the bedside table, gun in hand.
“Oh, she’s here…”
Boris replied confidently, his silver eyes scanning the room from one direction to the other as he spoke.
“It was confirmed by that Italian f**k Vincenzo, remember? He claimed to have contacted the woman directly. Said he spoke to her right before we hit the place… believe me, she’s here alright... somewhere.”
“There’s no one in the bathroom, Boris.” a tall, slimmer man announced as he stepped out into the bedroom to join them.
“Check the walk-in-robe!” Boris barked back at them.
“Search every inch of this place. Hurry the f**k up and find the b***h! We don’t have time for this shit.”
“Boris, we’ve got two minutes tops before we need to leave.” a well-built man covered in tattoos announced, glancing at his watch.
“Yuri is right!” another man agreed.
“We should get the hell out of here now, before the cops crash this place.”
“No one is going anywhere, understand?” Boris commanded angrily, his silver eyes flashing dangerously as he glared at each of the men, one at a time and with clear warning.
“We’ve got a f*****g job to do, remember? We are not leaving here without the Italian Don’s woman!”

Sitting on the chair and staring at the screens in front of her, Alexa who could hear every single word of the intruder’s discussion, now knew why these men were in their apartment.
They had come for her, just as she had guessed.
And from what she could tell, these men were working for someone incredibly dangerous.
Someone who was also working alongside a man named Vincenzo, whoever that was.
Little did she know, Vincenzo was actually Nicholas; one of his many aliases in fact.
But with the sheer terror of her current situation surrounding her now, it was beginning to eat away at her from the inside.
Knowing full-well that there were four incredibly dangerous and also armed men less than a few metres away from her right now.
Men who had come here for her.
She was the Italian Don’s woman they had been talking about just now.
Alexa could only imagine what they might do with her if they somehow managed to find her hidden away where she was.
Unfortunately for her, the task of breaking into the safe room wasn’t exactly impossible. Difficult, of course.
But not impossible.
The men’s voices filled the secure room as she felt her body begin to tremble uncontrollably.
“One minute, Boris!” the tattooed man shouted out in warning.
Then she heard it, the faintest sound of ‘rattling’ coming from the door of the safe room and her chocolate brown eyes widened, flicking to glance at the door on her side.
Alexa could feel her heart hammering heavily within her chest as she just sat there, staring at it with wide open eyes; eyes filled with immense panic and dread.
I appeared that one of the intruders had found the door to the safe room!
Placing both her hands over her mouth to prevent herself from making any sort of noise, Alexa watched the handle jiggling again and again as whoever was on the other side of it attempted to pull it open with nothing but brute force.
As if it might work.
Closing her eyes in an attempt to try and prevent herself from giving away her position inside, Alexa unknowingly held her breath as she preyed for a miracle to come.
“Hey Boris…” one of the men announced with a sinister grin.
“I think I know where the little Miss might be hiding.”
