By now Alexa had been in the bathroom for almost twenty minutes and Dante was beginning to become rather concerned.
Especially after what happened the last time that she visited a restroom unattended, back at the Charity Event several months ago.
She was almost kidnapped from right under their very noses!
Turning to Nicola, he whispered his command into his underboss’ ear, so as to keep things as discreet as possible.
“Go check on Alexa, would you.”
With a simple nod in response, Nicola marched off towards the bathroom with his task in mind, leaving the worried Don to wait and wonder.
-
Turning the corner and making his way into the hall leading towards the restrooms, Nicola suddenly froze mid-stride as he almost collided with none other than Alexa herself.
“Holy crap, Nicola!” she gasped aloud, lifting her eyes to lock onto his.
“Piccollo, (little one) there you are.” he almost sighed the words as they escaped his lips.
“You’re certainly in a rush.” she pointed out, lifting her left brow.
“Has something happened?”
He frowned at her question, finding it ridiculous.
“No, no, nothing’s happened. I was actually sent out to search for you.” he admitted with a deviant smirk curving the corner of his mouth.
“Apparently, you’ve gone M.I.A?”
Alexa suddenly lowered her gaze, admitting obvious guilt in her features.
And Nicola quickly picked up on it as his dark eyes narrowed knowingly.
“Something on your mind?” he queried cautiously, as the two began to walk back out the way that Nicola had just come in.
Alexa still seemed hesitant with giving her response as she kept her gaze lowered and away from his.
Nicola knew immediately that something was definitely wrong!
“Come on... come with me.”
Wrapping his massive arm around her tiny body, the underboss began to lead her along towards a more private section of the VIP booth area.
Of course, Alexa appeared incredibly tiny when compared with this giant-of-a-man, but she willingly went along with him as he led her to the secluded area and sat her down on one of the seats.
He took the seat opposite her before hunching himself forwards and leaning both his elbows down onto the tops of his knees.
“Come on piccollo, (little one), what’s on your mind? Hmm?” he urged softly.
Taking a deep breath, Alexa weighed up her options here and now.
She could tell him the truth...
She could make up a lie and run with it...
Honestly, she wasn’t quite sure which to do.
Unfortunately, telling Nicola what had happened might only lead to the same terrible fate that she had thought of earlier, with Matteo being killed by Dante for his seedy fantasies.
“Look… I don’t think it’s something you can help me out with, Nic...” she admitted rather hesitantly.
“I just… I can’t…”
This immediately caused Nicola to frown.
“Is something wrong? With the baby?”
Alexa’s eyes went wide as she flicked her head to face him rapidly.
“NO! No, of course not!” she sounded rather adamant about this.
“It’s nothing like that, the baby’s fine, I promise.”
She could see him visibly sigh with relief, allowing his shoulders to slump over and his facial features to soften.
“That’s good to hear. I’ll admit, you had me worried there for a second.” he admitted with a smile.
“I myself am very keen to meet the ragazzino (little boy) who will run circles around our Reaper.”
Alexa chuckled, knowing exactly what it was that Nicola had just said, even though he had spoken the words in Italian. And Nicola noticed this but chose not to think into it too much.
“If he’s anything like his father, he’ll be a handful for sure.” she admitted, glancing down at her belly and lifting her hand to rest on top of it in admiration.
“So, what’s eating away at you? You can talk to me.” he urged with a smile.
Biting her bottom lip; a common sign of her nervousness, Alexa attempted to choose her next words carefully as she spoke them.
“Has Matteo always been jealous of Dante?”
Her question caught the underboss off guard as he lifted his left brow and sat upright again.
It didn’t take him long to reply.
“For as long as I’ve known them… yes, he has.” he admitted to her rather honestly.
“You already know the story of what happened with Yasmin, correct?”
Alexa nodded as she spoke.
“Yeah. Yeah, I know about that.”
“Well, I’m afraid it’s always been Matteo’s downfall. He sees what his brother has and wants it for himself. Sibling rivalry at its worst, I’m afraid.”
Nicola scoffed, shaking his head slowly from side to side.
“And Dante has always been a very jealous man as well. As I’m sure you’ve seen on more occasions than one.”
“I don’t know why…” she admitted.
“I’d do anything for that man! I’m having his frickin kid for Christ sakes! If that doesn’t tell him how much I love him, I don’t know what else could!”
Naturally curious about why she would ask him this particular question, Nicola decided to ask.
“Why are you asking about this, piccollo?”
She lifted her chocolate brown eyes, still furrowed inwards with hesitance, to meet his as she opened her mouth and spoke.
“I… I might have overheard something… in the bathroom just now.” she admitted.
Immediately worried that Alexa might have overheard Dante’s plans to propose to her here this evening, Nicola’s eyes widened as he sat up and asked the first thing that came to mind.
“Well… what did you hear?”
Alexa, who trusted Nicola completely, decided to explain everything.
“I was in one of the stalls about ready to come out when I heard a couple come in together. They were fooling around, one thing led to another and before I knew it, the two were kinda going at it right there in the bathroom...” she explained in embarrassment.
Nicola’s reaction surprised her. He laughed, causing her to frown.
“I’m sorry but how is that funny?” she demanded.
“Oh come on, it is kind of funny.” he tried to persuade her with a brilliant smile.
“Do you even know who the two were?”
“Yeah, that’s kind of the problem.” she announced solemnly.
“It was Matteo with one of the girls he brought in, er... Candice I think her name was.”
Suddenly, Nicola’s expression showed that he was putting piece-by-piece together, in an attempt to make sense of what he had seen earlier on.
“Right… that actually explains why she left not that long ago. I remember, she came storming out, grabbed her purse and split.”
But as soon as he made his admittance, Nicola’s expression instantly changed to a much darker one as he looked to Alexa while asking his next question.
“Wait… did he do something to her in that bathroom, Alexa? Did he hurt her?”
“No, he didn’t hurt her or anything. What happened between them was completely consensual on her part.” Alexa assured him before she went on to explain her concerns.
“But…”
“But?” Nicola urged.
Alexa swallowed nervously before she opened her mouth to try and explain.
This felt incredibly difficult for her to admit openly to someone else, but she felt a comfortable connection with Nicola since the moment they met, so very long ago back in that alley.
She almost felt as if she could tell him anything.
“He… he might have called out someone else’s name while they were intimate. It just kind of slipped out in the heat of the moment; you know?”
Frowning once more, Nicola couldn’t quite understand whose name Matteo might have cried out to cause such a reaction from her.
And why Alexa was feeling so uncomfortable about it right now.
“I don’t understand…” he admitted, shaking his head.
“What’s the big deal? Whose name did he call out?”
Now Alexa looked incredibly guilty as she struggled to meet his eyes.
Pursing her lips together, she linked both her hands together nervously in her lap.
Seeing her beginning to close herself off, Nicola quickly tried to convince Alexa to open back up and just tell him what it was she knew.
His patience was apparently beginning to ware.
“Alexa, I can’t help you if you won’t even-”
“-It was my name, Nicola! Ok?”
She made her admittance while closing her eyes in discomfort and lowering her head in apparent shame.
“What?” he asked softly.
“He called out my name when he… you know…” she found herself unable to mention Matteo climaxing over his repulsive fantasy.
Nicola, still taken aback by the idea of Matteo fantasising about Alexa, sat in stunned silence as he tried to allow this information to sink in.
Sure, it made sense that Matteo would fantasise about Alexa.
He had already shown his obvious interest in her on many occasions in the past, so that wasn’t relatively new information.
But for him to do something like this right here and now?
Especially when he knew that Dante intended on proposing to her here this evening, let alone that the two were expecting their first child together…
This was certainly not good news!
Someone would definitely have to go and have a word with young Matteo about these particular fantasies of his.
Making a note of this, Nicola took in a deep breath before exhaling and sitting back up to speak.
He appeared completely composed, even given what he had just heard her admit.
“Look, piccollo, you have nothing to worry about, alright?” he spoke confidently now.
“You’re serious?” Alexa sounded baffled by him.
“This doesn’t concern you at all?”
Tilting his head off to the side, Nicola gave his reply in a strangely calming manner.
“I mean, yeah. It does, I guess. But you yourself shouldn’t be concerned about it. Let the man have whatever fantasies he wants in his own privacy, though preferably as far away from here as possible in the future…”
Nicola spoke with a dismissive wave of his giant arm before going on.
“The fact still remains; you are with Dante. Anyone could see that the two of you are incredibly happy together. I mean, you’re about to become first-time parents! What could be more exciting about that? Just focus on that and leave young Matteo to me, yeah?”
Alexa couldn’t believe just how amazing Nicola truly was to her.
Not only did he save her from almost being killed back in that alleyway upon the night of their first meeting, but he had also continually protected her from serious dangers and even now, the man had shown such kindness towards her and her relationship with Dante.
Nicola Russo was one hell of a man, that was for sure!
“Thank you, Nicola… I really mean that.” she spoke to him with a warm smile.
“Thanks for always being there for me.”
He chuckled, modestly.
“Hey, we’re family now piccollo, remember?” he reminded.
“We Russo’s always look out for our own… always.”
Suddenly, Alexa felt a wave of relief wash over her.
Having someone like Nicola Russo on her side was certainly a godsend and perhaps for once, luck was smiling down upon her.
