Chapter 38 - A Missing Wallet

1721 Words
After receiving a phone call from an unknown number, Alexa was currently sitting up in her bed with her phone pressed up against her right ear, confusion flooding her mind as she tried to wrap her head around her situation. “Nicholas? Is that you?” she asked, an understandably cautious tone to her voice. “Si, mia mara.” (Yes, my dear) he replied smoothly and in perfect Italian. “I thought you might like to know that I am currently in possession of your fiancé’s wallet. He must have dropped it at some stage last night amidst the chaos...” “Wait, you have Dante’s wallet?” Alexa queried with a confused frown. “I didn’t know he lost it. “These things happen, mia mara. (my dear) It’s nothing to worry about. Luckily for him, I have a sharp eye and happened to see it while passing by.” Nicholas lied to her blatantly. A sudden feeling of relief came over Alexa and she smiled at Nicholas’ surprising and unexpected act of kindness as he spoke once more. “So, how should I arrange getting it to you?” “Oh, um…” Alexa paused, contemplating what she would do or say to him next. She felt as if she had suddenly been put on the spot and didn’t know how to respond quickly enough. As she thought for a moment, Nicholas continued to give her some options. “I mean we could meet up somewhere, or I could perhaps drop it in to you…“ he offered rather openly. “Whatever’s easier for you.” Alexa suddenly felt frustrated by her lack of freedom. There was definitely no way that Dante would allow her to leave and go driving around to an unknown location on her own, so that option was obviously out of the question. Which left only one other option remaining… “I’m sorry, Nicholas. I really can’t leave the apartment right now-” Alexa began to try and explain, but he quickly seized the golden opportunity to jump in and make the decision for her. “-Well then, it’s settled! I’ll come and drop it in to you.” “Wow, you’d really do that?” Alexa asked in disbelief. “Of course!” Nicholas assured her confidently. “Really, Miss Myers, it’s no trouble at all. I happen to have the day off and wouldn’t mind a nice drive into the city to clear my head.” Smiling, Alexa pursed her lips at this man’s generosity. First he had saved her life, and now he was going above and beyond to assist her and Dante with returning the Don’s wallet. “This is really incredibly kind of you, Nicholas. I honestly cannot thank you enough. I’m sure my fiancé will be very grateful for it.” she announced happily. “So, when could you stop by?” “Well… how does now sound?” he queried, surprising her even more. “Uh… sure.” she replied. “I’ll have to text you the address.” “No problem... I guess I’ll see you soon then.” he announced. “Arrivederci.” (Goodbye) “Bye Nicholas.” As she replied, she did so with a giant smile while lowering her phone and pressing the red ′end call’ button on her screen. Then just as she had promised, Alexa sent Nicholas a text with the address of where she was, at Dante’s apartment. He immediately replied saying that he would be there within twenty minutes or so. Yes, Alexa had been incredibly trusting of this complete stranger. And yes, it might not have been the smartest thing she had ever done in her life. But as she saw it, what reason did she have not to trust him? The man had been nothing but helpful and kind to her since the moment that they had first met. How could someone that kind and helpful be planning to do her any harm? It simply made no sense! Pocketing her phone, Alexa quickly headed towards the bathroom mirror, hoping to check her appearance one last time before heading downstairs to the lobby where she planned on meeting with Nicholas. Unfortunately for her, Alexa would soon learn just how untrustworthy others could be. Especially in such a cruel and unforgiving world as that of the Mafia... - Having travelled across to the warehouse with Nicola and several of his men, Dante was in the middle of strategizing; plotting their next move, now with the knowledge that Ivan ′the Butcher’ Volkov was in town. The Reaper needed to be on his guard at all times and that included being several steps ahead of his enemies. There could be no room for mistakes, especially now. As he stared down at the countless photographs taken of the Butcher since his arrival, now covering the desk in front of him, Dante was instantly brought back to the intense conversation as Nicola suddenly called for him. “Capo?” Lifting his head and meeting his underboss’ gaze, Dante replied. “Hm? What?” “Everything alright, boss?” Nicola queried, now a little concerned with Dante’s lack of focus in this extremely serious issue at hand. Dante waved his hand dismissively as he gave his response. “Yeah, fine. Go on, I’m listening.” Nodding his head, Nicola continued to take lead of the conversation as he and several other men stood around the desk, their evidence and information splayed out across the desk’s wooden surface in front of them. As Dante stood in silence, now listening intently to what Nicola was discussing, he was suddenly surprised after feeling the vibration of his phone. Apparently he had just received a text message. Reaching into his jacket pocket, the Don lifted his phone up to see who had sent it. He couldn’t hide the smile that spread wide across his face upon seeing Alexa’s name, or rather the nickname he had given her contact on his phone. ‘Bella’ Opening the message, the Don read in silence for a second or two before all hell broke loose… Hey handsome, Good news, I just received a call about your lost wallet. Nicholas is on his way in here now to drop it off so you can relax. I’ll have it by the time you get back. I love you and see you soon. x x x Within the fraction of a second Dante’s face suddenly turned a shade of white and his eyes widened with immense fear. What was she talking about? He had his wallet with him. In fact, he had never lost it in the first place. Immediately red flags emerged within his mind as he turned to Nicola with a panicked expression on his handsome face. And Nicola noticed it right away; that something was terribly wrong. “What is it?” the underboss queried with obvious concern. “Something’s wrong. I need to call Alexa.” the Don announced, dialling his fiancé’s number as he looked to Nicola again. “Nicola, contact her team. I want eyes on her now. Tell them not to let anyone into the apartment complex, I don’t care who they say they are or what they’re there for. No one enters that place until I get there!” “I’m on it.” Nicola replied whilst pulling out his phone and beginning to dial. Dante held the phone up to his ear as the call connected. In a state of horrific panic he waited for Alexa to pick up, and with every ring that passed by he could feel his heavy pulse thudding loudly within his head like a deafening drum thundering over and over again. “Come on bella, pick up…” he whispered to himself. “Pick up…” ‘Click…’ The call finally connected and a moment later he heard her sweet, angelic voice. “Hey you! Can you believe Nicholas found your missing wallet? I mean, what are the odds? I didn’t even know it was missing.” She beamed happily, completely unaware of the danger she had unknowingly put herself and her unborn child in. But Dante needed to warn her now, before it was too late! “Alexa, my wallet is here with me.” “Ha ha, very funny. I’ll have you know that I just got off the phone with Nicholas who said he found your precious wallet, the same one you lost last night, remember?” She attempted to remind him, having no idea that she had been coerced by a manipulative Mafia Don in disguise. “I know you don’t like it when I’m around other men, but Nicholas isn’t like any of the others. He’s actually a really nice guy.” “Alexa listen-” “-No, you listen Dante! I’m serious about this...” she cut in over him angrily. “You can’t keep me hidden away like this all the time. If you get to know him then I’m sure-” “-ENOUGH! ALEXA, LISTEN TO ME!” Upon hearing his shockingly terrified tone Alexa immediately silenced as her entire body froze. She found herself listening intently to her fiancé as he went on to explain his sudden outburst. “I’m trying to tell you that I have my wallet. I never lost it; do you understand?” Dante went on to explain in a somewhat calmer voice now, though it was still laced with panic. “Whatever this man is telling you it’s all lies, do you hear me? And it means that you’re in serious danger!” With her eyes widening as sudden realisation hit, Alexa spoke her next words through now trembling lips. “Dante, I sent him our address… he knows where I am.” “Lock yourself in the safe room, I’m on my way.” Upon hearing this Dante flew into Reaper mode, rushing out of the warehouse’s entrance and headed towards the nearest car with his men in close pursuit. He kept the phone call active, switching his phone onto ‘speaker’ mode instead so that he could use both his hands to drive. They needed to get back to the apartment ASAP! But would they make it in time to help Alexa?
