Chapter 4 — Selene’s POV: The Human Who Knows Too Much

1624 Words
“You…” Kael’s voice was low, sharp, and filled with something I had never heard from him before. Not even anger. Something colder. More dangerous. I stepped in front of Justice instinctively. I didn’t think about it. I just moved. “Kael,” I said quickly, trying to steady my voice. “This isn’t what you think.” His gaze snapped to me, eyes narrowing. “Then explain it to me, Selene. Because from where I’m standing, it looks exactly like what we’ve been warned about.” My chest tightened. Of course it did. A werewolf. A human. Standing too close. Too familiar. Too wrong. “It’s not like that,” I insisted. “Then what is it like?” he demanded, taking a slow step forward. I could feel Justice behind me,still, silent, watching. That somehow made everything worse. “He’s injured,” I said. “I found him in the forest. I was just—” “Helping him?” Kael cut in. “Yes.” “You expect me to believe that?” His voice rose slightly. “You, of all people, just helped a human out of kindness?” I opened my mouth. Closed it. Because… that did sound ridiculous. Kael let out a humorless laugh. “Selene, you break rules, not follow them. You challenge everything we stand for. But this—” he gestured sharply toward Justice, “—this isn’t rebellion. This is stupidity.” My temper flared instantly. “Watch your tone,” I snapped. “No, you watch yours,” he shot back. “You’re standing here defending a human like he matters.” I felt something twist in my chest at that. “He does matter,” I said before I could stop myself. Silence. Heavy. Sharp. Dangerous. Kael went still. Completely still. “Say that again,” he said quietly. I realized what I had just said. Too late. I clenched my jaw. “I didn’t mean...” “No,” Kael cut in, his voice colder now. “You meant it.” Behind me, I felt Justice shift slightly. Still calm. Still too calm. Like he wasn’t even worried about what was happening. That made me uneasy. “Step aside, Selene,” Kael said. “No.” The word came out without hesitation. Without doubt. His eyes darkened instantly. “Don’t do this.” “I’m not doing anything,” I replied. “You are.” “You’re protecting him.” “Yes.” The silence that followed felt like it stretched forever. Kael’s gaze moved past me, locking onto Justice again. “Who are you?” he asked. Justice didn’t answer. “Answer me,” Kael snapped. Still nothing. I swallowed. “Leave him alone,” I said. “Selene,” Kael said slowly, “move.” “No.” “Move.” “I said no.” The air shifted. That familiar tension the kind that came before something snapped settled heavily around us. Kael exhaled slowly, like he was trying to hold himself back. “You don’t understand what you’re doing,” he said. “Then explain it to me,” I shot back. “Because all I see is a wounded human and a pack that would rather kill first and ask questions never.” “It’s not about questions!” Kael’s voice finally broke, frustration spilling through. “It’s about survival!” “And letting him die helps us survive?” I challenged. “Yes!” The word echoed. Harsh. Final. “He’s not just any human,” Kael continued, his voice dropping again. “You can’t feel it?” I froze. Feel it? My mind flashed back... To the moment I touched him. That strange spark. That pull. That something I couldn’t explain. “I don’t know what you’re talking about,” I said, but my voice wasn’t as steady anymore. Kael’s eyes flickered to mine. “You do,” he said quietly. “You just don’t want to admit it.” Before I could respond... Justice spoke. “Interesting,” he said calmly. Both of us turned to him. It was the first time he had spoken since Kael arrived. And just like before... There was no fear in him. Only that quiet, unsettling confidence. Kael’s expression hardened immediately. “You don’t get to speak.” Justice ignored that completely. Instead, his gaze stayed on Kael. “You recognize me,” he said. It wasn’t a question. Kael didn’t answer. That was answer enough. My heart started racing again. “What is he talking about?” I asked, looking between them. Neither responded. “Kael,” I pressed, my voice sharper now. “What is going on?” Kael’s jaw tightened. Then... “He shouldn’t be here,” he said. “That’s not an answer.” “It’s the only one you need.” “No, it’s not!” I snapped. “You know something. Tell me.” His eyes met mine. And for a second... I saw it. Hesitation. That alone scared me more than anything. Kael never hesitated. “He’s dangerous,” Kael said finally. “So are we,” I shot back. “Not like him.” That made my stomach drop. I turned slowly to Justice. He was already looking at me. Watching me. Like he had been waiting for this moment. “Selene,” he said softly. The way he said my name, It did something to me. Something I didn’t understand. “What is he talking about?” I asked him. Another pause. Then, “I didn’t come here by accident,” he said. I already knew that. “You said that before,” I replied. “I meant it,” he continued. “I was sent.” Sent. The word echoed in my mind. “By who?” I asked. He didn’t answer immediately. Kael stepped forward suddenly. “Don’t.” Justice didn’t even look at him. “By people who know about your kind,” he said. My breath caught. “That’s not possible,” I whispered. “It is,” he said. Kael’s voice cut in, sharp and furious. “He’s lying.” “I’m not,” Justice replied calmly. “Stop talking,” Kael warned. “No,” Justice said simply. The tension snapped. Kael moved. Fast. Too fast. One second he was standing there, The next, he was lunging toward Justice. “Kael, don’t!” I shouted. I reacted without thinking. I stepped between them. Again. Kael stopped just inches away from me, his hand clenched tightly, his breathing heavier now. “Move, Selene,” he said, his voice low and dangerous. “No.” “He’s manipulating you.” “He’s not.” “You don’t even know him!” “I know enough!” “You don’t know anything!” Kael snapped. “Then tell me!” I shouted back. “Because clearly you do!” Silence crashed over us again. Kael looked at me. Really looked at me. And for the first time, I saw something break in his expression. “You’re choosing him,” he said quietly. It wasn’t a question. It wasn’t even angry. It was… something else. Something heavier. I shook my head immediately. “I’m not choosing anyone.” “You already did,” he replied. My chest tightened. Because part of me.. A part I didn’t want to face.. Knew he might be right. “Selene.” Justice’s voice. Soft. Close. I felt his hand brush against mine. Just barely. But it was enough. That same spark shot through me again. Stronger this time. Clearer. I sucked in a breath. Kael saw it. Of course he did. His expression darkened instantly. “No…” he muttered. “What?” I asked, my heart racing now. But Kael wasn’t looking at me anymore. He was staring at our hands. At the space between us. At something I still didn’t fully understand. “This can’t be happening,” he said under his breath. “What are you talking about?” I demanded. His eyes snapped back to mine. And this time.. There was no hesitation. Only certainty. “He’s the one,” Kael said. My stomach dropped. “The one what?” Kael didn’t look away. “The one the prophecy warned us about.” The world seemed to tilt. My breath caught. My mind refused to process it. “No,” I said immediately. “That’s not..” “It is,” Kael cut in. I shook my head. “No. That’s impossible.” “Selene..” “No!” I snapped. “It’s just a stupid story. A warning to keep us in line. It’s not real.” “Then explain that,” Kael said, his gaze flicking to my hand still close to Justice’s. I couldn’t. I didn’t have an explanation. All I had was that feeling. That pull. That connection I couldn’t deny anymore. “Selene,” Justice said again, quieter now. I turned to him slowly. “What is this?” I whispered. For the first time... He didn’t look completely in control. But his eyes still held mine. Still steady. Still certain. “It’s what I came here for,” he said. My heart stopped. Because in that moment.. I realized something terrifying. This wasn’t an accident. This wasn’t coincidence. This wasn’t curiosity. This was something much bigger. Something I wasn’t ready for. And as Kael took a slow step back, his voice cutting through the silence one last time.. “Run,” he said. I blinked. “What?” “Run, Selene,” he repeated, urgency breaking through now. “Because if the Alpha finds out before you do…”
