CHAPTER TWO Alexa arrived back at her house in the desert outside Phoenix late that night, and despite the exhaustion and creeping effects of jet lag, found she couldn’t sleep. And so she did what she always did when she couldn’t sleep—she worked. But she was between cases, and she knew she wouldn’t make any progress on any cold cases before she drifted off. That made her turn to a different sort of cold case, the murder of her partner’s girlfriend when they were in high school.
