Where the Rain Found Us – Part 6

This time, things didn’t go back to how they were. They became… better. ⸻ Daniel kept his word. Not in grand, dramatic ways—but in the small, consistent things that mattered more than promises ever could. He called when he said he would. He made time, even when he was tired. He listened—really listened—like he used to. And slowly, Amara began to trust again. Not blindly. But intentionally. ⸻ “Guess what?” Daniel said one evening, his voice carrying a hint of excitement. Amara smiled, leaning back on her bed. “What?” “I’m coming home next week.” She sat up immediately. “You’re serious?” “Very.” “For how long?” “A few days,” he said. “But I didn’t want to wait any longer to see you.” ⸻ Her heart reacted before her mind could catch up. A mix of excitement… and nerves. Because seeing him again meant facing everything that had changed. ⸻ “Okay,” she said softly. “Okay?” Daniel teased. “That’s all I get?” Amara laughed. “I’m trying not to overreact.” “Too late. I can hear it in your voice.” ⸻ When the call ended, she sat there for a while, her thoughts racing. This was it. No more screens. No more distance. Just them. ⸻ The day came faster than she expected. Amara stood at the same bus terminal where she had once watched him leave. Only this time… She was waiting for him to return. ⸻ Her fingers fidgeted slightly as she scanned the crowd. People moved around her, voices blending into noise, but she focused on one thing— Him. ⸻ And then she saw him. Walking toward her. ⸻ For a second, everything else faded. No sound. No movement. Just that familiar face, now carrying a little more weight, a little more maturity… but still undeniably him. ⸻ He stopped a few steps away. Like he wasn’t sure what to do next. “Hi,” Daniel said. Amara smiled softly. “Hi.” ⸻ The moment felt almost unreal. Weeks apart, yet it all came down to this simple exchange. ⸻ “You look…” he started, then laughed nervously. “You look the same.” Amara raised an eyebrow playfully. “That’s your big line?” “I had something better in my head,” he admitted. ⸻ She stepped closer. Closing the space. ⸻ “Hi,” she said again, softer this time. And that was all it took. ⸻ Daniel pulled her into a hug. Not rushed. Not uncertain. Just real. ⸻ Amara held onto him, feeling something settle inside her. Not the same feeling as before. Stronger. Calmer. ⸻ When they finally pulled apart, neither of them moved far. “Now what?” Daniel asked. Amara shrugged slightly. “We start again.” He smiled. “Not from the beginning.” She shook her head. “No. From where we are now.” ⸻ They spent the day together—walking, talking, rediscovering each other in a way that felt new but familiar at the same time. There was laughter. There were pauses. There were moments where they simply looked at each other, like they were making sure this was real. ⸻ As evening approached, the sky slowly darkened. Amara noticed it first. “Daniel…” He followed her gaze upward. Clouds. ⸻ He smiled. “Of course.” ⸻ The first drop fell. Then another. ⸻ Rain. ⸻ They both laughed softly, standing there as it began to fall around them. “No shelter?” Daniel asked. Amara shook her head. “Not this time.” ⸻ They stepped closer together, letting the rain soak through everything once again. But this time, there was no fear. No doubt. Just understanding. ⸻ “I’m proud of you,” Daniel said suddenly. Amara blinked. “For what?” “For not losing yourself,” he replied. “For choosing yourself… and still choosing me.” ⸻ Her chest warmed. “I learned the hard way,” she said. “Worth it?” Amara looked at him. Really looked. ⸻ “Yes,” she said. ⸻ The rain fell steadily, wrapping around them like something that had always been theirs. ⸻ And as they stood there, Amara realized something she hadn’t fully understood before: Love doesn’t stay the same. It grows. It struggles. It changes. ⸻ But if two people are willing to grow with it… It becomes something even stronger than the beginning. ⸻ And this time, as the rain fell around them— It didn’t feel like a question. It felt like an answer.
